Lmao now thats some bro science

The extra weight is down to the lack of stabilisation required, same reason why standing ohp is harder than seated

Now i know people use activation of stabilisers as a pro, but i don’t understand why thats a positive. For hypertrophy, they are insignificant muscles and for strength the standard is the barbell bench press

Nor have I. I prefaced my statement with FWIW specifically for that reason.

You also managed to invalidate your claim that DBs are safer on your own which was nice of you to do.

Great. I never said that an extra 50lbs of bar weight was going to translate to 50lbs on the pecs. That's an assumption you've made. Regardless, you agree that load matters and you're mostly supporting my point.

Why would a barbell movement load the lats anymore than a DB movement? I don't agree with that at all. Lat loading in the bench press is minimal. It only appears that way because good benchers externally rotate their shoulders which engages the lats for stabilization. There's no actual work being done.

nah... I think OP is onto something. His lifting math and science is strong like Luke Skywalker. OP can you please provide the elusive smith machine bench to freeweight bench formula? It would help all the noobs out there a lot... ya know... the "If I can do 185x5 on the smith machine, how much can I do for 5 on regular bench?"

Lmao WTF am I reading in this thread.

Pick up heavy things. Put them back down. When that becomes easy... Pick up heavier things. Rinse and repeat.

At some point that dumbbell isn't going to cut it. And unless you have some anthropomologic birth defect or anatomy problem, you should be able to bench safely.

Maybe your programming was the problem... Max benching 3x/week for 4 weeks. Lol. Accident waiting to happen and the opposite of lifting for longevity

Do both, variety is good for the muscles IMO along with my own mental sanity of going to the gym for 12 years.
Lately I do less BB because of my shoulder injury so being in a fixed position is not ideal.

I'm not trying to state what I was saying about the load of weights as a fact, I'm asking it as a question, hence "correct me if I'm wrong" the first time I said it.

I legitimately would like to understand more clearly how much one benefits from implementing the barbell bench into a regime that does everything else omitting the one movement.

As a natty, building a really good strength base is the most important thing in achieving a good physique. While you can get strong on dumbbells, the lower overall weight you have to use, paired with realistically being limited to rep ranges above 5 means its inferior to barbell bench for this.

With proper control, dumbbells give you better isolation, better rom and a deeper stretch. Thing is though this can all be found with other chest excersies (cable flyes, pec dec, hammer strength etc etc). Meanwhile no other excerise really builds pressing strength in the horizontal plane like barbell bench, theres just no substitute for what it offers.

Both are great excersises, but barbell bench is an essential, dumbbell bench is an optional extra

It does. When you can bench press 315 for 5 reps it's a given that you can bench press 225 for reps and that's why strength is important.
Oh and deadlift, especially stiff leg deadlift is one of the best exercises ever for overall aesthetics and posture

Lmaoooo oh **** looks like some random internet phuck has figured it out.

If strength didn't matter for bodybuilding why are all of the greatest bodybuilders of all time insanely strong? Almost all ifbb buys can flat bench 400+ for multiple reps and squat 585 for reps

But yea keep telling yourself that lol

Tempted to start barbell benching again.

Strength does matter to me for sure, although injury prevention even more. Could the hammer strength machine sub for the barbell press since it stabilizes the weight left to right for you?

The plane of motion in the DB press is better suited for chest development than BB bench because it allows for more horizontal adduction (although still not ideal, cable press or hammer press are ideal). I don't know why this is such an argument. BB bench lets you move more weight, other variations allow greater emphasis on the chest.

How are there people who are past novice stage who don't know the difference between moving a weight from A to B and training for maximal muscle tension? They are completely different goals that require completely different training. If you're training for maximum strength don't pretend what you're doing is optimal for development and vice versa. I think Jordan Peters sums this up better than me.

Hammer strength doesn't build strength in the same way, the eccentric portion in particular is completely different to having a barbell on your chest

Try benching a bit narrower, and lower on your chest while pausing. I think this eliminates any problems for most people, and going narrower increases ROM as well

Strength itself doesn't matter for bodybuilding, but I've never seen a natty that looks big that didn't have good strength in squats, bench, pull ups, rows. Deadlifts aren't as important for bodybuilding purposes but still useful
