The baboon family photo is tasteless and I’m not sure why the guy emailed the pics put like that. I hunt and realize some people find it offensive so why blast it around to everyone.

Its fairly rare in nature to kill unless its for survival (food/defense/mating)....Im not sure there are many instances of killing simply for the purpose of taking a trophy...That type of killing is left to a very small sub-section of humanity.

If a human needs food or needs to protect themselves then they should kill as needed. That is nature and that is part of being in the animal kingdom. To kill for the sake of a photo and bragging rights is clear evidence of a mental disorder (in my opinion).

Regardless of the method or motivation, killing is killing and death is death. At least in this instance, it is controlled, limited, and all resources are made use of, rather than anything going to waste. The whole "trophy" aspect is just nitpicking...who cares if they want to stuff a baboon and take it home with them? Would it have been better to leave the baboons, not pay any money towards the people who would benefit from such a program, feed less people, and allow the baboons to reproduce recklessly, leading to overpopulation, and plenty of murdered babies by rival male baboons?

I don't disagree that it takes a certain kind of someone to want to do this, post pictures, and brag about it. But their motivations for doing it doesn't discount the benefits that come from it, no? And like you said, better for them to have an outlet that can also help others rather than figuring out how to deal with those issues on their own.

Even I'll admit he looks just a little bit too happy posing with the whole generation of baboons he wiped out but he's not who you need to worry about, it's the illegal poachers that are the problem. People like him that pay crazy amounts of money to hunt these trophy animals legally are what funds their conservation, as I'm sure has already been stated in this thread. Plus if you don't hunt you wouldn't understand the time and effort that goes into hunting most animals, of course you're gonna be a little excited when you finally get the payoff.

I'll research this later, but it's almost always more nuanced that it appears. AFAIK in general, trophy hunting is used to target older animals, the money goes towards long term conservation, and the locals eat the meat (or there's laws whereby all the meat must be necessarily eaten and not wasted).

That said, doesn't mean this guy isn't an *******. It's classless to pose like that over dead animals.

I'd never go hunting and was initially really feeling bad for the animals being shot, but then I remembered that thread where someone put up a video of a lion pack tearing apart a warthog (or some kinda pig). Guess that is the usual way animals in the wild die, get torn apart, while alive...till it dies of course or starve to death.
