(She had learned to speak Spanish, French and Portuguese to an intermediate level before she decided to try to learn Polish.)

But yeah moving to montreal will help as well, your choice
Noone can become fluent in a language in 4 months.
This is the bar for fluency...
C2 Can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read. Can summarise information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation. Can express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in more complex situations.
C1 Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning. Can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. Can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.
(Below is the bare minimum of what it takes to be considered fluent, and it's debatable if someone can even be considered fluent if they have a B2 level in a given language. They can live, socialize and work using the language at that level, but that does not necessarily = fluency, as anyone who has worked or socialized with immigrants will understand.)
B2 Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

I don't know why you got banned, but I hope no beginner lurkers believed your nonsense.

To the lurkers and folks who may be unaware - the desktop version of duolingo and the app are remarkably different. The desktop website really goes into detail on rules of the language and is more "instructive" rather than just playing mix n' match on the app. Just in case anyone was unawares...
With that said, I maintain that it serves best as a review tool, same as any flashcard program.
Moving on....
One thing you guys may want to look into is the 1-week language classes that are offered all over the world. I can't speak for japanese or any of these other languages, but every big city in latin america has numerous schools that offer "one-week curriculums". Usually they're set up at A1a, A1b, A2a, B2a, etc. Basically each Level is two weeks using an a+b designation for beginner or advanced for that level. And I mean they are everywhere in Latin America. Basically you travel to the place over the weekend, take your class Mon - Fri, then go home, or incorporate it into your vaca. The week of classes is usually around $200 USD and almost always the classes are taught in English. This method of immersion + classroom is a huge help as I struggle to transition from B1 to finally reaching B2.
Last May, I flew down to Colombia. Colombia is a choice location to study spanish as the accents tend to over-enunciate every syllable, and Bogota spanish is considered the purest accent in the Americas (least indigenous influence). In any case, I flew down there, spent three days in Bogota, then went to Medellin where I enrolled at the Toucan Spanish Language School. (There were four or five language schools to choose from there).https://www.toucanspanish.com/
These classes are pretty social as well. They'll usually have stuff going on in the evenings - tours, food experiences, salsa lessons, etc. I made friends with a bunch of British, Irish, and Dutch people while there, as we all went through the curriculum together.
In 2020 I'm going to take a C1 level class in Buenos Aires (which means 2019 must be my year of mastering B2!) Right now I'm looking athttps://www.ailolabuenosaires.com/orhttps://expanish.com/learn-spanish-i...res-argentina/
I imagine similar schools are set up for Portuguese all over Brazil and French over in Montreal.

I like to consume video and audio a lot... So that's potentially going to be a big problem for me, though it may force me to simply spend most of my time talking and typing with people.

I have only used the app about 3 times, so I didn't even think to recommend the desktop version, I just assumed that people would use it.
However, I echo what you said...
Please, use the desktop version of Duolingo... It's much better than the app!

On unit 5 of my Pimsleur Russian course. Very impressed with it so far. It's about 30 minutes every day. So far it's been greetings and asking for/giving directions. Able to understand and speak everything so far without having to repeat any courses. Downside is that it does not teach you how to read or write, only speak and understand. May supplement with other teaching tools in the future, but good with this for now.

I've used Duolingo to learn some Spanish. It's really great because you can just get your 15 mins of study in anywhere in the form of a funny sort of quiz game.

Pimsleur French 3 Lesson 1:Added this in randomly to see if i could hang and it was considerably behind my current level of french. However since i'm not actively living in a french country or in any french meetup groups at the moment, this is good muscle memory practice for the tongue/brain. Will continue these daily and try to slide in more french news/television to keep my levels in the B1-B2 range.
Pimsleur Russian 1 Lesson 23:Got fukin rekt today. I thought I hated French grammar, Russian is next level trolling. It's like you have to construct sentences inside out.
Example: English - How much gas is in the car? / Russian - How much in your car exists gas.

Nice thread. I'm going to continue studying Brazilian portuguese. It's a fun language to speak.
I was using Duolingo on Android, then just finding Brazilian music translations.

I haven't done squat on this end. Can someone offer me some resources (preferably safe and free) for learning basic French?
I know some stuff, but not enough to get around.

the entire Easy French / German / Spanish / Italian series is absolute gold. Beyond that the Pimsleur is the best method for automating the speech of basic phrases. You'll get a nice little base off Pimsleur 1.

Pimsluers audio 1 lesson 15 mandarin - I have done the full first set and was working on second but I will redo the whole first box set again before this month is over. Don’t why I started there but I did lol
Pleco flashcards - went through 100 words out of my 500 card deck. Will do 200 tomorrow
Spoke some mandarin with a friend who is learning too,I mostly spent time correcting him and it felt good to speak it
Watched 45 min of easy language on YouTube that someone posted- the mandarin is pretty fast paced so had to pause and read it at times

Have you heard of Bossa Nova?
IMO the #1 music for summer evenings, sunsets, and lazy Sunday afternoons...

I read about the nightmare that is Russian and Polish grammar.

Example: English - How much gas is in the car? / Russian - How much in your car exists gas.
I knocked out the Cyrillic alphabet before diving into any audio. Took maybe 3 consecutive days of 20minute study to get comfortable with the alphabet. You'll still get rekt trying to pronunce words you've never heard outloud but you will have gotten over the largest "wall" to their language.

Today’s studying
Downloaded a app called tofu learning - spent a hour and half on it really liked the flash card system in it. Really keeps you going in a good way
Watched 3 episodes of happy Chinese. Really good YouTube videos
Learned 5 new words and used them in about 10 sentences each
Spoke some with my friend who is learning - we had a good time making up sentences
Tomorrow I will go through 1-3 chapters of new practical Chinese reader. I needed around chapter 9 prior so the first 5 chapters will be quick. But I also have a workbook to go with the text book so it will take me longer but that’s fine

edit: ^^wizard^^ was uploading his day's progress as i was sitting down to do it. I see you player.
FLOTD
Pimsleur French 3 Lessons 4 & 5:Listened to these while i cooked dinner. Vocab is still considerably behind my level of french, but i picked up one or two idioms that were useful.
Pimsleur Russian 1 Lesson 24:Sat down with this one and gave it my full attention. Got rekt again. At this stage you're not only trying to wrap your head around the grammar structures, you're just trying for dear life to say the words properly.
Feel like i'm way out in front of the french but feel like i'm a step or two behind the Russian. To fix this i could easily practice the day's vocab separately before i sit down with the lesson. Just saying the words outloud to get my mouth to form it correctly and i'd be all caught up. That said there's only 29 lessons in Russian 1. I'm going to truck through for the rest of this week and then work review/practice this weekend. When I've finished the final lesson I'll think about whether I want to introduce my Assimil Russian book (already purchased) or if I want to continue treking through Pimsleur Russian 2. Not gonna get too far ahead of myself though, that's a quick way to fail. Going to spend the rest of my night wathing a ratchet French reality tv show i found.
