In.

Native Spanish speaker, know English.

I was doing Brazilian Portuguese with duolingo, was pretty easy. I'll get back to it with some Pimsleur and I'm thinking of going on a romance language streak by following up with Italian and French, don't know if this is a good idea. I would also like to learn German and Japanese.

There are a number of free resources...

Duolingo.com (Basically the listening, reading, and bidirectional method.)

Memrise.com (Spaced repetition for learning vocabulary and phrases.)


30 mins a day minimum is preferable.
No one who has learned and speaks a second language at a B1 level or above would recommend Duolingo as a mechanism to success. You've provided a bunch of resources for the opee to waste time "learning about how to learn a language"




@Jimberee

Step 1: Acquire Pimsleur OR Michel Thomas in your target language. Do 30minutes of lessons each day. Pimsleur will be 1 lesson a day, MT will be 4 or 5 lessons. Speak the vocab you learn each day out loud. Insert it into your day to day activities.

Step 2: After 3 weeks of the above. Visit the "Easy Languages" youtube channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/magauchsein) and follow your target language. They are 3 to 6 minute videos of real conversation with english subtitles and the target language subtitles. Practice listening for any word or phrase you learned from Pimsleur or MT. Pick out any useful phrases in the video, write them down and practice using them in day to day context.

Step 3: If you can make it 60 days of the above you will have a nice base in the new language, but you'll have trouble with grammar and creating your own sentences. This is the point where you can't get by on downloaded/free content. You'll purchase the Assimil program in your target lesson. Some of it will be review of what you've already learned but Assimil is the GOAT for explaining foreign grammar concepts. It's cheaper than rosetta stone and infinitely more valuable. Most people never make it beyond 30 days of learning a new language, so if you can make it 60 days it's worth the investment.

Protip: Be cautious of google translate.www.wordreference.comis the goat for an accurate translation dictionary.

After 3months of all of the above you will have a firm grasp of where you are weak, where you need to improve, and how you want to tailor your language learning. That said, it's usually the same for all new language learners and that is they are over confident from the pimsleur method and when someone talks to them in their target language they have dear in the headlights face. Listening comprehension is the hardest and most difficult part and that really just comes down to practice. italki.com is the goat for this. The above advice is if you're trying to learn popular languages (French, Russian, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese). If you're dicking around with Mandarin, Japanese, Arabic, Hungarian or any of that then awfukbye. You're on your own.

HelloTalk is good, there are a ton of native Spanish speakers that use it, and as a native English speaker you are definitely in demand.

For those who haven't used it, Hellotalk is like a ******** for language learners that can be used on iOS or Android. There are a bunch of languages offered. I think it originated in China so Asian languages are well represented. Spanish has a ton of volume. Users can post both written and audio posts and receive corrections from natives through their correction engine. There is a translation engine as well. You can also do private chats, audio messages, and video calls in order to practice.

My method has basically been:

1) start private chats (again easy if you english native)

If you are a beginner, you will be trading english for their language. The convos are going to be slow. Once you level up that might shift as your level is higher than theirs. I'm closing in on C level so sometimes the people there to be social will just want to speak in spanish. Or if they have exhausted their beginning english, they will switch to spanish. Then its all about getting your reps in.

2) after a while move them whatsapp

3) have a rotation of 10 - 15 people that you ping or they will occasionally ping you. Theirs levels of being engaged will vary. Set up video calls, BS, visit them in their country, whatever... Without being in an immersion situation, this is a good way to constantly be using the language daily and getting reps in.

In the misc cologne crew we have our Scent of the Day (SOTD). Thread is largely comprised of fragrance advice and people dropping their SOTD to just let people know what they're wearing.

Since daily use/reptition is such a huge part of language learning I'm gonna start adding Foreign Language of the Day (FLOTD) to keep myself accountable and perhaps inspire some other people in here to stop frauding and actually take action.

FLOTD:

French - Watched two "7 jours sur la planet" videos on youtube. reviewed vocab I didn't understand and practiced sprinkling the vocab into conversation (30minutes total)

Russian - Pimsleur Russian 1 Lesson 20. Was a significant jump in vocab and sentence difficulty from lesson 19. Will likely repeat lesson 20 tomorrow as well as practicing some sentences with the new vocab during the day (45minutes)

I've set some lofty goals coming up for the next five years of language learning. My breakdown is like this.

Yeah I think it's really ambitious but I really enjoy learning languages. I'm really interested in, or have deep connections to each one of these languages. I'm particularly excited to be doing Japanese. My current language learning routine goes like this:

2. Run through Clozemaster Fast Track sentences. Aim for 500 score. Found here:www.clozemaster.com

30xp Duolingo (I began to focus a lot on heavy repetition of the audio, whilst saying the sentence, to improve listening and pronunciation. I sometimes repeat sentences for a few minutes straight, if the sentence has particularly difficult pronunciation.)

Reading a dialogue from my Teach Yourself textbook several times, trying to figure out the meaning with as little translation as possible.

Get a french girl and tell her to conversate in french only with you, dead srs mate, my coworker learnt spanish that way, and i've watched him communicate with clients in spanish. Said he learnt it in 4 months

But yeah moving to montreal will help as well, your choice

Being from Canada as well, I find the pronunciation to be very intuitive as well. Just say a word with a cheesy French accent and it will probably be close.

I just don't like how it sounds. I love Italian, but it's not that useful.

Thanks mane. Here's my motivations for each:

Spanish: Like many others, started back in high school, but didn't touch it for years. My WHY for Spanish comes from the proximity to the language. I'm an Houston brah, and some of my best friends all speak it. It initially just started a curiosity in what they were saying, but man, it's become an entry way into language learning, and ignited a passion I didn't really think I would have.

Japanese: Like most others, interest started with myself being an Anime fan boy, but rapidly went up when researching and learning about Japanese culture. Japan can sometimes be enigmatic, it's a weird fusion of Western and Eastern culture, but man, there's something so attractive about it. Additionally, the challenge of an Asian language is really appealing

Portuguese: Bit of a cultural and personal connection, and super similar to Spanish. Hoping this will take me around 6 months to get to B2.

Italian: Love the cadence and sound of the language. Literally each sentence sounds like a rollercoaster, but in a good way. Also similar to Spanish so I'm hoping to learn this relatively quick.

The Japanese language has their own rating system for language learning. N2 is basically equivalent to B2 (Functional Fluency) on the scale. N5 is Lowest, goes up to N1.

Yeah, it is quite hard to explain. they still have all their old traditions in tack, but absorbed some western things after America occupied Japan after WW2. Baseball is huge in Japan, I find it more entertaining than watching the MLB
