You aren't 'supposed' to like anyone. Yea the starks are generally sided with and I guess in they are the 'good guys', but every character has their own issues and problems.

The way Catelyn treats Jon is absolutely unfair and cruel. As you watch you'll come to find out that every character has a side to them that is imperfect in some way

Every house/family has as set of values that guide them, IMO it's interesting which houses/families people side with and why.

I like the Lannisters purely because I find them brilliantly manipulative and megalomaniacs, but I don't like their house values, they seem purely devoted to maintaining their legacy at all costs.

The Starks are about honor, so on an ethical level I favour the Starks the most.

Also, please bear in mind that all of the character's radically change as the series progresses. I do mean radically.

Well I didn’t need more than 30 mins in to the first episode to start liking it so I’m guessing I’m going to end up loving it. Wish I wasn’t watching it after everyone else lmao. No one to talk about it to

You can argue Tyrion is the most moral of all yet he has the more degenerate and dishonorable lifestyle and had to do some of the most fukd up things if you view his actions out of context

Each character is buried in hypocrisy and irony to humanize them but at the same time the events are so surreal it’s hard to label everyone as a certain type of person outside of the lannisters

I like it myself, although it has degraded in quality in the latter seasons because of questionable at best choices by the showrunners.

Still, I'd recommend giving it a shot because Game of Thrones offers nice political intrigue while simultaneously maintaining a large enough degree of escapism through its fantasy setting.

My personal grievance with most TV shows, particularly dramas - something HBO is loaded with - is how at the end of the day, they just drag you back into the worst of not just humanity/society at times, butcurrenthumanity/society. On that level alone, GOT still lets you sit back and get away from the real world while notcompletelysacrificing gravitas and all around quality.

Another plus is how GOT covers multiple plots and different personal journeys, so you're not dealing with a show that has all of its eggs in one basket (at least not until the very end). There are some characters people hate, but that's okay because the show doesn'tjustfocus on them (until Daenerys chews through the damn screen time up in the mid-later seasons), and some actually become characters you root for or vice versa.

Lastly, at the very least the majority of the characters are stronger in the start, and while some continue that, you can at least get a good sense of everything to see if it's worth pushing forward. You have Eddard Stark, King Robert Baratheon, Tyrion Lannister, Tywin Lannister - all in their prime, and that's just the tip of the iceberg.

As I'm currently rewatching the series, just a few thoughts/observations from Season 1 and a bit of 2 (Spoilers below):
Spoiler!

- Tyrion's early writing was so damn rewarding and Peter Dinklage made every scene he was in such a damn joy. What thef*ckhappened?

- Arya used to be such a cute, cheeky kid, and Bran went from being the perfectBranto Rasin Bran, the Three-eyed Aspie.

- Remember Petyr Baelish? Again, what thef*ckhappened, mate? The political intrigue, the sharp retorts, all of that really took a dive.

- Tywin Lannisterreallylikes referring to his house with Lion metaphors, which got me thinking: Where exactlyarelions in Westeros/Essos? I mean, every other House and their respective sigil at least makes a modicum of sense in relation to them; e.g. Starks in the North obviously are around wolves, the Greyjoys being seafarers could conceivably associate with krakens, stags are abundant in an area like Westeros for the Baratheons, the Targaryens are the #1 consumer of bad dragon dildos, ect.

But in what part of the GOT world do lions natively live? Really just a curiosity more than anything.

- So,Dany. I think I finally cracked what at least I find so grating about her character, even in the first season when she's arguably at her best: Daenerys is basically one of those tourists who goes on vacation for like,a week, and comes back with a French affectation or a bad English accent or won't shut the f*ck up about LA.

Except in Dany's case, it's that she's a born and bred Targaryen who is thrown into the Dothraki horde as Drogo's personal sex toy, develops Stockholm Syndrome, gets preggers, andreally thinksthat she's a Dothraki now. Except when she's also a Targ, and Stormborn, and not a complete hypocrite as the series progresses, all whenever it suits her. But yeah, she's a Dothraki tourist.

- Ned's "trial..." So, first off, Ned was kind of being a dumbass, but more on that in a bit. The whole "conspiracy" can be boiled down to:[ul]
  • Robert had bastard children

  • Joffrey and his siblings were products of Lanncest

  • Robert had both brothers and bastard children who would have had more claim to the throne than Joffrey

  • During Robert's death, Ned was supposed to act as King until Joffrey came of age.

  • Knowing the above, Ned wrote down "rightful heir" instead of Joffrey

  • Ned confronts everyone with this news, delivers the letter with Robert's seal, Cersei tears it up Always Sunny-style of nullifying a contract

  • ...?

  • Somehow, this escalates to Ned "plotted to murder" Joffrey for the throne, despite the only original intent was for him to be a placeholder until Joffrey came of age. And Ned admits this instead of literally anything else.

  • [ul]I feel like there was a missing piece there to explain why Ned would seriously incriminate himself to f*ckingelevenwith the nonexistent plot to kill Joffrey? He could have said anything, like he planned to give Stannis the throne or he himself hold the throne until Joffrey came of age in honor of Robert's memory - just to appease the little twat and Cersei. If he was so appalled by the dishonorable act of lying, why make a bigger lie that would also jeopardize himself and his family? Hell, he could have even thrown in towards the end that he was 100% going to take the Black and serve the realm in exile for the rest of his days rather than escape "justice" by death in an instant.

I have yet to read the books, but unless I skipped over something accidentally, I think that at least the show left a logical gap there.

Oh, and Tyrion isnota hobbit - he's f*cking awesome, and he knows it.
I will stand firm, I refuse to kneel - The fury in me is divine
My dark grave awaits, my fate is revealed - But I'm not afraid to die

Answer to the first part of your spoilers...

    Spoiler!
The showwriters didn't have the books to draw from with the last few seasons, because the last book hasn't been finished. That seems to be why some of the characters became lukewarm

I legit can’t listen to him for more than 30 seconds can you toss out a synopsis on why you think it’s incorrect?

I really liked the first season. After that my interest started to taper off. Considering the massive hype it gets I have to say it's overrated.
Death is impossible for us to fathom: it is so immense, so frightening, that we will do almost anything to avoid thinking about it. Society is organized to make death invisible, to keep it several steps removed. That distance may seem necessary for our comfort, but it comes with a terrible price: the illusion of limitless time, and a consequent lack of seriousness about daily life. We are running away from the one reality that faces us all.

got = brutally violent, grotesque soap opera designed to sate the taboo fantasies of the unsophisticated, unwashed Norman pleb rabble of modern society. In 2019, villains are the new heroes, and rape, murder, human sacrifice, incest, and cannibalism are "exciting" topics to depict on TV. The plot is actually really fuking dumb when scrutinized, and there is no point to it at all except to build a depressing and disgusting, sensationalist world.

It's like they try to hard to be edgy. I couldn't get into it. Made me uncomfortable. If I can't watch something with my 11 year old I'm not watching it (I'm separated and she comes over every other weekend). It's not the writer's fault, it's me. I'm not part of the target audience. I've lost interest in a lot of TV. I moved into a new apartment at the beginning of January and I have yet to setup my TV in the living room.

Aww all shows suck and are dumb... we just watch them for entertainment. I’m currently trying to think of a show that amazes me with its plot lines lol.

The moment GOT became one of my all time favorites was

    Spoiler!
When Ned gets the guillotine, and Arya and Sansa watch as it happens

I don't know any other show that will just kill off such an important character in a way that leaves your mouth open for about 5 minutes after the episode ends

I resisted watching it too (I resist most popular chit) but gave in. It's the best show I've ever seen.

Wincel is acting like those things weren't integral to politics, empires, and history for millenia. There's a reason the show incorporates them - its inspired by true political scandal, just with magic thrown in.

    Right? She's the bloodyworst.

That's exacerbated by how the showrunners either fell in love with Clarke's godawful acting or had to justify her massive paychecks because Dany is such a daft, insufferable character. The only thing worse than her or her growing male harem at her beck and call is the plot-gymnastics that get pulled off well beyond plot armor to forgive her ever mistake, her every hypocritical act, and then have said followers excuse everything she does, to boot.

It's one thing when we as the viewer see these things and go, "okay, maybe her followers don't, butsurelythose who are far wiser later on will see throu-nope, they fell into her lap, too." She pretty much ruined several characters just by proxy; she has a plot venereal disease.

Exactly, you can't take themsoseriously that all enjoyment is stripped away entirely.

As far as Game of Thrones goes, it at least attempts to paint with more shades of grey than black and white dichotomies - certainly more than can be said about the average Marvel/superhero shows or movies. Likewise, I wouldn't say that anything in it is any more shocking (given the period that the fantasy is based around) than many dramas that take place in the modern day. If anything, it's hard to decry GOT when so many modern dramas are entrenched in the worst aspects of contemporary culture; the fantasy nature and setting creates far more of a buffer with its themes than most shows set around the present reality.

Starting to think you have to be capable of abstract thought in order to like fantasy stuff. No real evidence, just anecdotal from the kind of people I know who do and don't like it.
