He also lied about his name so she had no way to check if he was a sex offender. She didn't know any of this stuff until they had already broken up. She contacted the University police like 20 times and the SLC police 5 times.

No they shouldnt.

Did she get a restraining order?

What crime did he commit to involve the police? Harassment isnt a crime

Cops can only get emergency protective orders in domestic violence situations, all other restraining orders the individual is required to get.

[quote]Rowland called a woman from a dating site to come pick him up. They went to a restaurant, drove by the capitol, went to her apartment so he could shower and then she dropped him off at a coffee shop, according to the timeline.
After she did, she recognized photos of Rowland in news reports and called the police.[quote]

Damn, he was already onto the next

I guaranteed you it went like this

I need to complain about my ex BF

Cop "do you have a restraining order?

No

Cop "did he commit any crimes?

He is harassing me

Cop "how?"

Just calling me and stuff

Cop "we cant do anything until he commits a crime or you get a restraining order against him"

Girl then does nothing but continue to complain.

It sucks but cops cant just violate someones rights because someone else complains. An actual crime needs to occur or a restraining order must be in place

So you arent going to victim blame... but someone who doesn't know the criminal background of a person they just met kinda derserves to get murderd. looool ok

I feel like you're really getting hung up on this. As if its a plot by the parents to rid themselves of their daughter and gain millions. Reality check: huge institutions and companies aren't going to give a fuk when you tell them what they did is wrong. Honestly how are you supposed to penalize an organization worth hundreds of millions of dollars??? The precedent in the legal world seems to be fining them a **** ton of money, which is what the parents want to do.

and once again, since you clearly refuse to read the article or inform yourself before commenting
I never ever said she deserved to be murdered. My only comments are regarding her parents suing the school for a ridiculous amount of money. Also see below:

Police have no duty to protect anyone? Common sense tells you that if someone makes multiple complaints, hey maybe I should take this lady seriously.

Did he commit a crime? Did he break any laws? Did she get a restraining order against him?

Cops cant just investigate without a crime having occurred

Supreme court ruled police have no duty to protect anyone

I guarantee you she was told at least 10 times to get a restraining order which she never bothered to do. Had she done it then the cops could have done something. But since she decided she just wanted to complain instead of doing anything that could really have helped her.... She was murdered

This is unknown information, and just like I can't assume that this guy made threatening comments or sent harassing texts, you cannot assume she was told to get a restraining order. Maybe that will come out eventually but it would speculation from either of us.

No no i literally know that. See being a cop for years i know exactly how this went as cops hear it daily from people. Harassment isnt a crime. People are always told go to court and get a restraining order but people dont want to do that because it takes several hours at court and costs money so they just continue to complain.

This is what I'm thinking ... the article just vaguely says that she contacted police many times, and that the guy "harassed her" (Harassed her how? Text messages? phone calls? Emails? Was there a threat?). It doesn't say what she told police, what she was complaining about, what specific behavior the guy was engaged in. If it wasn't criminal activity, then police cannot and should not get involved. Too many people get caught in the criminal justice system unnecessarily as it is.

Whenever these tragedies occur, people are quick to portray the police as incompetent or negligent because they want to blame somebody.

Police don't have a duty to protect anyone? What the actual fuk are you on about?

They did nothing after receiving 20 reports that there was a threat, a threat which became reality and ended in someone losing their life. Incompetence and ignorance at its greatest.

Add to this....

'Police officers are generally charged with the apprehension of criminals and the prevention and detection of crime, PROTECTION AND ASSISTANCE OF THE GENERAL PUBLIC, and the maintenance of public order.'

You should really educate yourself before posting. Again, what threat did he make? The article simply says she complained he was harassing her. Harassment isnt a crime. Until he broke the law police cant run around and arrest someone or investigate just because she complained about him. Again, i can guarantee she was told to get a restraining order which she couldnt be bothered to do

He's actually, legally accurate, I went and did some research and the Court ruling literally states that Police and Government officials have no duty to protect someone. I believe the only people they are "required" to protect, is someone in custody.

I guess "To Protect and Serve" is a thing of the past.

You posting one agencies motto or code of ethics means fukk all compared to the supreme court. Also again. What should the cops have done when no crime was committed? This isnt a tom cruise movie where police can see the future chief

Protect and serve is the LAPD motto only. Its not a creed or lawful order. It was picked in the 70s during a contest

BTW the lying about one's age happens. I know this one dude that is a super health guy. Looks great for his age, 48, but has told me he tells women he's 35 lol.

EDIT: dhawkeye1980 is spot on regarding police involvement.

Guys here are told to lie about their age by others that do it. The fact that they have to lie about their age to get younger girls speaks volumes.

I have another friend that is 48/49 and actually looks his age, but in a more mature silver fox fashion, and he typically dates younger women in their mid 30s, but having known him for nearly 10 years I've seen him date women well into their early 20s also *shrug* and he never lied about his age.

I didn't say there are no older guys who can't get younger girls without lying about age. I'm saying if you have to lie about your age to get them, then that says it all.

I looked it up. Harassment can be a crime in some many states, I think its a misdemeanor in Utah, but the catch is that it has to be recorded or written. Basically just saying " Hey I'm being harassed" holds no weight, which I can somewhat understand because people file false claims all the time.
