any legit martial art trumps no martial art.
Don't matter if it's BJJ or boxing, against a untrained person out in the world with no rules they're gunna have a huge advantage.
That said...Muay Thai is the best one ayy lmao
sprinkle in some judo too (cause irl fights involve clothed bodies)
Krav Maga is the GOAT but it's hard to find a gym that teaches the real deal version and not a watered down 'muricanized version.

As long as you don't use some Mc'dojo **** like Kung Fu or Aikido, and are in decent shape, it will all be situational.
In 1v1 fights though, the most common dudes who **** somebody up are grapplers/wrestlers. Just in my experience.

This bouncer clearly does MMA notice the leg kick the sprawl, the clinch and the throw, as brutal as the KO is his MMA saved him, obviously the fight was avoidable but look at it from a fighting perspective.

The sidewalk is only big enough to have 2 people walking side by side at a time.
A lot of boxers learn to work close in, through close range boxing and fouling e.g. headbutts (of course, they aren't as good as dirty boxing as an MMA fighter).

truth.
i box and dont typically lose street fights provided that i lay out the rules beforehand. hands only, if we go to the ground then auto-reset, no sucker punches. if my hands arent up then assume im not ready
good fcking luck beating me. youre gonna need it

maybe its worth just not being in the situation in the first place. the fighting should be a last resort. its mostly psychological, ambushes. mma and shooting, is controlled but street is no control

As a former "ground fighting is beneath me" guy, I would have been absolutely wrecked. Hell, we even saw a geriatric Randy Couture wreck James Toney in an MMA fight with relative ease.
Does anyone really doubt that it's easier to avoid getting ktfo than to avoid getting wrecked on the ground?
I also think a lot of people think that grappling only works on the ground. Grappling works on the feet, too -- that's how it ends up on the ground. Boxing off your back doesn't work very well

The dude who won it was some ass-whipe wearing a hula-skirt.
He had these massive hooks he just kept doing over and over accompanied by a "hssssss" sound.
100% one trick poney. The piece of crap won the tournament too.
Was pretty embrassing to watch, the competition was that bad.

2) It gets you used to being hit (that honestly saved me in the only 2 street fights that I've been in. I was used to getting hit in boxing training, so I didn't panic when I got suckerpunched a few times. In fact, I was just phucking enraged.)
3) Having both feet on the ground is good for stability.

It's cheap and everywhere, in comparison to an MMA gym.
MMA training would be the best, IMO, if it were cheaper. However, (at least here in the UK), boxing is dirt cheap for 3X training, whilst MMA gyms charge a lot more in comparison. (With a lot of seemingly bad coaching, based on a friends experience.)

This thread seems to just be about the physical side of self protection, and which combat sport is best for that. But, I do agree that it's important to say that, in case there are impressionable people reading, who think that street fighting is 'cool'.
I honestly do believe that awareness, avoidance, and good social skills are the best forms of self protection. (I've been in many situations where I've spotted people looking for someone - or me specifically - to start trouble with, but I've either outright avoided them, starved them of attention until they got bored, or I've walked away. Nobody really wants to hear those stories, from anyone, though... Guys always want to hear about you phuckin someone up.)
Note: I disagree with the vid title, and opening message though. Boxers and MMA guys can adapt their training to Self protection (e.g. they can have drills built around ambushes, and many self protection trainers have MMA training/sparring as a fundamental part of their training. There is also combat shooting training, where people are taught how to prepare for ambushes.)

You know how there are fighting styles specifically designed for knife disarming? Masters of those fighting styles get ****ed up hard by rubber and shock knives the second they're out of a controlled sparring session (all over youtube).
Your literal best choice with a knife against you is to either run the **** away, or have a more intimidating weapon. One unlucky slash that the attacker doesn't even need to be aiming for could mean extreme blood loss.

1. run away
2. If cannot run, have a gun.
3. If no gun, grab the nearest improvised weapon or object that can be used to fend the knife attack off, like a barstool. Use environment to keep attacker away, like tables/chairs/walls/etc.
4. If just on your own with bare hands, try to gain control over the knife wielding arm without getting fatally stabbed/slashed in the process. Good luck tho lol better be athletic af and lucky. It's better to let them initiate an attack and then interrupt it vs grab at their arm when they aren't actively attacking you.
Some srs high stakes chit though, just run away whenever possible

I've faced a guy who broke a bottle in a fight. How I 'won'... I literally ran away.
Don't phuck around and be an idiot. Only fight someone with a sharp weapon, if you have literally no way of escaping.
