Once you get the house and kids, it's LDAR. You are working to make ends meet, especially in this day and age where teens want the latest iPhones, clothes, etc. to keep up with their peers. Don't even talk about college expenses.
Once you get through paying off college, then you're too old to work and you run into age discrimination. You take some part-time jobs here and there until you reach 65. At that point you are almost literally broke.
It's pretty depressing. Once the kids go off to college I'm moving someplace way cheaper. I won't get paid the same, but I'll be pushed out due to age discrimination in tech anyways.

But if you have anchors like kids/wife etc then it would become more complex. Living somewhere with high living costs the whole year will destroy your average retirement fund and small passive income.

I'm 44, lost my job with covid - might get another one, might just retire now though..
December income
- Rentals + airbnb $7,718
- Gains on shares $26,635
- Gains on managed funds $2,881
- Gains on private equity $506
total ~ $29k NZD = $21k USD
Could you live on $21k a month?

You have more opportunity here than anywhere else in the world.

I admire guys like Warren Buffett that do their job because they genuinely enjoy it. Turns out it pays pretty well, too. He could have retired 50 years ago but he keeps at it.
I like the idea of FIRE but more as a means of doing what I whatever I want to do, not actually living the retired life.
Conventional retirement just seems like death to me.
