Kraken was a 6th round pick. Pick
175
. Will go down as one of the top 3 picks Hurney ever made as a GM.
http://espn.go.com/blog/carolina-pan...-price-to-stay
Take it with a grain of salt, but it makes me feel so stoked hearing that. Looks like he won't be taking the Peppers route(who by the way looks to have completely fallen off the map after some pretty damn great years with the Bears). I personally don't think we'll have to worry about us being cheap with him. I hope he understands the reason we didn't extend him last offseason was because Gettleman was trying to dig us out of the hole Hurney put us in.
We've got roughly $12m in cap space as we stand now, and that's not even including all the extra space we can create with cuts and restructures. We'll be more than capable of resigning him

CHARLOTTE, N.C. –
Defensive end Greg Hardy wants to remain a member of the Carolina Panthers after this season. He's so happy here that he'd consider taking less money to stay.
He won't say how much less.
He just wants to stay, believing he's a part of the best front four in the NFL and a Carolina team, 10-4 heading into Sunday's NFC South showdown against the New Orleans Saints, that has a chance to be a consistent playoff contender.
"I'm not an agent or the team," Hardy said. "I'm not paid to negotiate. But I know to have something great, you've got to give a little bit, too. I believe I'm going to great."
This is yet another example of the strong chemistry the Panthers have developed during what has turned into a breakout year for coach Ron Rivera and his players.
I say this because Hardy never has hesitated to talk about wanting a big contract and a expensive, classic car. He felt he should have gotten an extension after his second season in 2011, when he burst onto the scene as a starter.
There was an effort to get a deal done before this season, but that never happened. Hardy says he hasn't heard a lot on his end lately, so you couldn't blame him if he waited to see what the offseason market offered.
And he may still do that.
But his preference is to stay.
"As far as getting paid, I feel it's more about loyalty, respect and consistency," Hardy said. "I would say yeah, I do all those things. I do think I deserve a little bit."
Hardy doesn't have the 50 sacks he playfully set as a goal before the season. He's not even close with eight. But he has 33 quarterback pressures, by far the most on the team, and his ability to play every position on the line has given defensive coordinator Sean McDermott more flexibility in his game plan.
"A terrible feeling," Hardy said of not being able to turn some of the pressures to sacks. "But I like it. It makes me that much more hungry to get there faster.''
Hardy is in the final year of his four-year rookie contract earning $1.35 million. Fellow defensive end and team sack leader Charles Johnson got a six-year, $76 million deal in 2011 that was the highest in team history. Hardy isn't likely to get that much in today's market.
The Panthers also have a new general manager to deal with in Dave Gettleman, who has been more frugal with his spending than former GM Marty Hurney.
Hardy's main focus is beating New Orleans and making sure he's prepared to make an impact on the outcome.
"To reiterate myself, it's got to be worth it," Hardy said. "But I will take less than another team if Carolina's price is right."

so WTF happened to Ron Rivera? He's gone from being most hated guy in Carolina to most loved.
Interdastating
also, it's been awhile since I told the Panthers to collectively fukk themselves for stealing Star from my team, although our dumb asses probably STILL would've drafted Jarvis Jones even if Star was on the board

During the game vs New Orleans when he punted the ball with less than 2 mins remaining–everyone was going wtf including me. With that said I'm now in the never doubting Ron again crew.
PS after we lost to the saints a couple of weeks ago he knew we we're gonna be playing for the division 2 weeks later. It's been confirmed he is a wizard.

Worst case scenario is that if one of the best offenses in the NFL gets a first down it's game over.

I felt so defeated when we punted but hey, alls well that ends well, Christmas miracles all around.

Good thing is, many players and coach Rivera have said that they aren't taking the game lightly, and know how important a first round bye is. I don't think this game is going to be easy at all on Sunday. I expect another low scoring, 17-10 type win.

Again, who knows though. Glad to see they're taking it serious. With Smitty out(this changes EVERYTHING) we need that first round bye more than anything.

handle our business and let Steve get that extra week of recovery
this game would be huge for our offense (esp Cam) to gain some confidence
Go out and put up 28+ with out Smitty and forget about that abortion of a game they had last week
ANY offensive rhythm would give us a punchers chance to make a run at this thing

I know it's hard to have 7 players named, but dammit if Davis and Lotulelei weren't snubbed.

Ya know I understand Star getting snubbed.. obviously we all know how HUGE he's been for us, what a phenomenal player he's going to be.. but he's an interior linemen without flashy stats and he's also a rookie. he'll get there.
but Davis? The guy already had his comeback put on the backburner because of Peyton, and now he's having a career year for at worst a top 3 defense in the entire NFL and he's probably the 2nd or 3rd best performer on said D. just a shame for him.

Had a feeling Davis would get snubbed, which is truly unfortunate. As someone who's had 2 ACL surgeries myself, I can definitely feel his pain coming back.
We need to run the ball down ATL's throat tomorrow. They already had the 31st ranked rush defense in the league before last week, and lost another key player. I'd like to see Barner get some reps, to give Dwill and Tolbert a break (even though Tolbert only got ONE carry last week, which was really confusing). Wouldn't mind seeing some more of what Hixon could do, and hopefully they'll work Brandon Williams into the plan.

So cutting Godfrey in the offseason will free up $5.1 million dollars in cap space. Just read that and it makes me feel even better about our cap situation. MORE than enough money to retain Hardy(and many of the other guys riding one year deals that have been big time contributors). He had his moments but it's either cut him and save $5m of cap space or keep him and have a $7.1 million dollar cap hit. Classic example of a cap casualty. I'd much rather use that money to resign Mitchell/Mikell.
Does anyone know how much a franchise tag will cost on Greg Hardy? I'm a little rusty on that subject but doesn't it take the top 5 players in terms of salary at that position, averages it, and that's the one year number?
and to add, cutting Stewart would actually accelerate roughly $19 MILLION dollars in dead money, in comparison to a reasonable $6m cap hit if we keep him.. so anyone that thought he may get cut this offseason was mistaken. He is 100% guaranteed to be a Panther next year. Cutting DeAngelo would have minimal savings(roughly $1m I believe) this year and would actually add a cap hit to 2015. I think he's looking a lot better this year and is worth keeping around given how heavily we depend on our run game.
Let's all take a second and give a round of ****ing applause to Dave Gettlemen. The progress he's made in digging us out of the Hurney-hole is nothing short of amazing. He used what little money he had to spend this offseason on guys like Mitchell, Mikell, Wharton, Cole, Ginn, etc..
gotta head to work now but I want to make a big post outlaying our future when it comes to the salary cap, impending free agents, cuts, etc. when I get back.

^ Godfrey's money definitely needs to be moved to Mitchell, whether Godfrey is cut or restructured. Godfrey will not start again, baring injury, I rather have Lester.
I'm here in Charlotte for the holidays, and haven't lived here in a couple seasons. What's the best spots uptown to watch the game now? I was thinking of heading to All American Pub/Cans Recycled tomorrow with a few people, any other suggestions?
