I'm in my late 20's now, pretty well established in my career and travel my dick off.. I build up airline miles from work travel and use them to go random places. I have been to 15 countries since March 2015, and 28 states in 2 years. When i turn 30 i plan on taking some time off and going around randomly, at that point id be able to come back and have my job waiting for me.
On the opposite end, i wish i travelled in college, i would of had more fun and partied more, i feel slightly too old to stay in hostels now.

Everything in moderation. I agree you should take some time to explore in your youth, but fkn LOL @ throwing away your career to spend 9 months randomly backpacking around. One of my best friends from college is doing this now, when he returns to the US he will be unemployed living in his parents house, and have to find an entry-level job similar to the one he got 2 years ago out of college.
Meanwhile I got to travel to the other side of the world for work, and am heading home with a promotion AND great travel experience to boot.

I kinda agree with OP.
I'm 25 now... spent several years traveling while I was in the Air Force whenever I had leave.
I lived in Germany for 3 years and Japan for a year, so I traveled all over Europe and a lot of Asia. I've also been to South America. So far I've been to 37 countries
I'll always love traveling, but I'm glad I got "rid of the travel bug" so to speak because now I can focus on my goals instead of being completely curious about life outside the US

If you travel when you're young, you can figure out what you want to do instead of having to pick some random thing when you're 20 years old. People that are 20 are picking careers. 20 year olds...picking careers. You don't know your ass from your elbows when you're 20 and yet you're supposed to declare a major, something you might be doing for the rest of your adult life. Lol, wtf. When you actually think about it, it's insanity. So yes, travel when you're young and figure out what you want to do. Just don't be an instagram whore and tell everyone how special (read: insecure) you are while doing it.

Travelling is completely overrated. Travelling for the sake of travelling in the 21st century is escapism. You should only travel to countries you are genuinely interested in. Modern day travelling is thinly disguise form of sex tourism when itโs all about cheap booze, cheap drugs and easy access to sex or about your social status showing others you are โculturedโ. It wonโt make you more aware, more enlightened, wiser or happier. Sleeping in a ****ty conditions and living amongst poor people doesnโt make you a better person.

Traveling creates exposure, which leads to experience, which leads to wisdom. Watching a documentary on the people and culture of the east is not the same as experiencing the people and culture first hand. True understanding comes from experience. No virgin will truly understand sex from watching porn. No cubicle dweller will truly understand what it is like to stand on top of Mt. Everest by looking at pictures. Your reality is molded by your imagination... and that imagination is what drives people to travel, explore, learn, and grow.

Your idea of common sense isn't actual common sense.
Real common sense equates to things like treating people like you want to be treated, not hurting others while making yourself happy, not being a piece of ****, etc. The rest of "common sense" seems to be get used in a false sense as people want to justify why they do the things they do.
I personally don't give a **** if people want to travel or not. There's a reason I see more Australian, UK, Germans, etc than I do people from the US when I travel. People in the US have this idea that slaving away in the job market is the way to do it and even though the country is over 400 million people, I rarely see them outside of Mexico for their 2 week vacation. Meanwhile it seems like people from other western type cultures have a better idea (my opinion) of traveling and experience.
That being said, you can easily have the things you want by saving up for it or by sacrificing here and there to do it. For me, I joined the military and that set me up for health insurance and college. Boom, problem solved there. As far as a down payment on a house, who the fck cares about owning a home? The joy of renting is in freedom. Sure, I'm paying someone's mortgage for them but when it's time for me to pack up and live in another place, I tell them 30 days out and off I go. No worrying about renting my home out, no worrying about market value, no worrying about getting a new roof or maintenance while I'm gone. Drive a ****ty car? Who the fck cares? Plus, you can get a decent car (very decent) for 10k. I have a jeep cherokee and it's nice and I even get compliments on it. I guess I'm just failing by not owning a bmw though right? Supporting kids? What kids? And if I have them, I can do what my parents did and raise them (like they did me) overseas in a foreign country or I can finally do what I have to do and work the standard job if I have to. Make them take out money for college? If they want, or they can join the military like every male in my family has done.
There's ways around everything and there's easy fixes if you want them but it seems that you, like many in here, have this idea that you have to QUICK go to college, QUICK get a job, QUICK work for a promotion, QUICK, work harder, QUICK work more. I know plenty of people like you. I see their hair turning gray. I see them talk about their 401k at every single fcking opportunity. I see them brag about how they're going to make X dollars a year in retirement at 70 years old. Meanwhile, I have less than they do, I do what I want, when I want and I've worked/traveled in all sorts of random places in the globe. The experiences have helped shape me into the man I am and I think that's a good thing. And before you say some lame remark about #wanderlust type ****, that's something 20 year old women do when they travel for their 2 weeks a year so just save it.
I always suggest for people to teach overseas for a year. They can make enough money to get by, see if they enjoy it, experience something new, maybe learn a new language. It's a way to make things work while seeing how the rest of the world lives.
But I also know plenty of unhappy people making 200k a year who talk about their retirement plans all day long. Whatever floats your boat.
So much truth. I've met so many old people in my travels who's one biggest regret was slaving away in their youth and not adventuring more. Like you said... this is mostly from Americans.
The best part is all the "American Excuses" people come up with for not doing what they want. #1 excuse ... not enough money. Okay... so get rid of your car (take a bus ride a bike), no cable TV, no cell phone plan, no McDonalds every day, etc..
People have such pervasive and ridiculous beliefs regarding what they need. I know people that are millionaires at 50 that still don't think they have enough to retire and adventure... like wtf.

And guess what...
For 99% of the western world IT IS THE SAME. I've heard it thousands of times before...
"I wish i could win the lottery so i can retire and do whatever i want."
Or...
"If i work hard i can retire by X age and live the quite life, do things i like, and travel."
For those that truly enjoy their job and their work (most people don't) then that awesome. For the other 99%... money, careers, and jobs is just a means to freedom.

50% of those with PTSD do not seek treatment
19% of veterans may have traumatic brain injury (TBI)

Yet managed to become one of the most revered people in history like Jesus (also a traveler). Interesting if you ask me...
