Good lord do you understand the term context?

The average Americans concept of house and car is completely distorted. Hence why they keep getting bigger and bigger with each passing year. Hence why every 20 year old on this forum talks about getting a BMW vs. a Corolla. The illusion that more wealth, more lavishness, and more stuff will fulfill them... that it is worth slaving over. In the end, the music stops, and it all goes back in the box. Until people wake up and realize the stuff can't fill the emptiness... we will continue to have epidemics of obesity, prescription drug abuse, depression, and killing.

In my opinion however, the sadness elicited by this growing trend is one that pales in comparison to the realization that many young men and women today are neglecting the world rarely visited, analyzed or understood: their minds, their beings and their selves, hence this fixation on 'luxury' and 'travel' and 'finding myself'.

The man who spends a week in a shack in the middle of a desert and just sits in deep, contemplative thought will know more of the world and what it truly offers than someone who has crossed into all seven continents.
What a load of crap.

Waste your youth prepping in a career you probably won't even want when you're older. Brb, making life decisions about what I want to do for the next 50 years at age 18-22. Nah. Better yet, figure it out during your 20's by exposing yourself to different things. This idea that you have to start grinding away right away is a leftover ideal from the 1940's and 1950's when people came back from war and wanted to live a calm and quiet life and have a steady job where no one wanted to kill them.

Plenty of employers now like the idea of someone who is diverse and well traveled. As long as you're building skills along the way, there's no reason to spend the best years of your life grinding away for some imaginary retirement. It's such a garbage attitude to have.

Catch up to what? Some societal pressure of where you're supposed to be at X age?

I've had jobs where I made 12 bucks and hour and I had jobs where I made 150k a year. I was happier making 12 dollars an hour and helping kids than I was making 150k a year and putting money away. Reaping the benefits is another way of saying you have to possibly do something you don't like just because you make X dollars all to put away because society says you have to own a home and have a car and do all this other random **** by a certain age. The only ones who care about that crap are people who have the exact same attitude about it as you do. The rest of us understand that it's not worth it to grind away at something for no reason other than that's what you're supposed to do.

But hey, tell yourself whatever you want so you can justify your lifestyle.

It's more dangerous in most American cities than it is anywhere else. I travel ALL the time and I feel more in danger back in the US compared to just about anywhere except for places like Mexico.

Left London at 25 with about 6000 (about $9000 I guess) in my bank (after flights) and landed in Rio. Spent 8 months in various countries in South America. I ended up in Australia with about -3000 so spent more than I could but Australia has a lot of $$ so didn't take long to make it back. Was worth it.

one could argue most forms of travelling to be another lavish "illusion", always searching for some vague meaning or fulfillment from the next place on their list, but they fail to realize inner peace is independent of location.

I have spent considerable time travelling and also on my career.

It's not even about travelling for me, at the end of the day all I want is my own time to pursue my own interests and experience new things in an exotic setting. Just give me enough money to live and I am good. A career is overrated, retire at 45? who cares I have just sold my entire life away.

Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard you hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done! Now if you know what you're worth then go out and get what you're worth. But ya gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain't where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody! Cowards do that and that ain't you! You're better than that! I'm always gonna love you no matter what. No matter what happens. You're my son and you're my blood. You're the best thing in my life. But until you start believing in yourself, ya ain't gonna have a life. Don't forget to visit your mother.

So when you're not traveling, where do you live? How do you make ends meet? Have health insurance? Have retirement funds? Have savings in case **** hits the fan? Have money for a downpayment on a house or you just going to rent forever? Going to drive a ****ty car forever? Going to support your kids on a **** salary? Going to make them take out hundreds of thousands of dollars for college?

At some point reality will hit you that unless you were born into a trust fund or have rich parents or somehow have a very high net worth at a young age, responsibility will creep up on you and you will regret not "slaving away" to create a life for yourself.

But hey, if you enjoy working **** jobs so you can experience "life" in a foreign country (which is basically the same **** you do at home, with a different setting/culture/food), then by all means go for it..

And fyi, society doesn't say you have to own a home or have a car past a certain age. It's common fukin sense unless your parents gave you a house for free and you have a personal driver to chaperone your dumbass around.
Your idea of common sense isn't actual common sense.

Real common sense equates to things like treating people like you want to be treated, not hurting others while making yourself happy, not being a piece of ****, etc. The rest of "common sense" seems to be get used in a false sense as people want to justify why they do the things they do.

I personally don't give a **** if people want to travel or not. There's a reason I see more Australian, UK, Germans, etc than I do people from the US when I travel. People in the US have this idea that slaving away in the job market is the way to do it and even though the country is over 400 million people, I rarely see them outside of Mexico for their 2 week vacation. Meanwhile it seems like people from other western type cultures have a better idea (my opinion) of traveling and experience.

That being said, you can easily have the things you want by saving up for it or by sacrificing here and there to do it. For me, I joined the military and that set me up for health insurance and college. Boom, problem solved there. As far as a down payment on a house, who the fck cares about owning a home? The joy of renting is in freedom. Sure, I'm paying someone's mortgage for them but when it's time for me to pack up and live in another place, I tell them 30 days out and off I go. No worrying about renting my home out, no worrying about market value, no worrying about getting a new roof or maintenance while I'm gone. Drive a ****ty car? Who the fck cares? Plus, you can get a decent car (very decent) for 10k. I have a jeep cherokee and it's nice and I even get compliments on it. I guess I'm just failing by not owning a bmw though right? Supporting kids? What kids? And if I have them, I can do what my parents did and raise them (like they did me) overseas in a foreign country or I can finally do what I have to do and work the standard job if I have to. Make them take out money for college? If they want, or they can join the military like every male in my family has done.

There's ways around everything and there's easy fixes if you want them but it seems that you, like many in here, have this idea that you have to QUICK go to college, QUICK get a job, QUICK work for a promotion, QUICK, work harder, QUICK work more. I know plenty of people like you. I see their hair turning gray. I see them talk about their 401k at every single fcking opportunity. I see them brag about how they're going to make X dollars a year in retirement at 70 years old. Meanwhile, I have less than they do, I do what I want, when I want and I've worked/traveled in all sorts of random places in the globe. The experiences have helped shape me into the man I am and I think that's a good thing. And before you say some lame remark about #wanderlust type ****, that's something 20 year old women do when they travel for their 2 weeks a year so just save it.

I always suggest for people to teach overseas for a year. They can make enough money to get by, see if they enjoy it, experience something new, maybe learn a new language. It's a way to make things work while seeing how the rest of the world lives.

But I also know plenty of unhappy people making 200k a year who talk about their retirement plans all day long. Whatever floats your boat.

Overrated. It's fun to travel, but a whole year of it?
I do trips here and there, I spend my early 20's getting my degree and building my career. Now I can go wherever I want, spend a week or two. Get paid vacation while doing it.
And I can come home to my HOUSE.

Or people enjoy doing different things other than working 40-60 hours a week. But hey, tell yourself whatever you have to so you can sleep at night.

If you're under 30 you can apply for the work and travel visa. I know a guy that spent a couple months making wool on a farm. (srs) He then moved on and was a bartender and even spent a few weeks doing some sort of shell collecting operation on the beach for some environmental group. Plenty of jobs for the passerby if you apply for the visa.

I do trips here and there, I spend my early 20's getting my degree and building my career. Now I can go wherever I want, spend a week or two. Get paid vacation while doing it.
And I can come home to my HOUSE.
Wow!

A whole week or two! Your own house too? Damn dude, you got it all figured out!

You dont have to travel to the end of the earth to get a good experience. Theres so many things to see within a weekends drive/trip in this country no matter where you are that barely costs anything and is dozens of times a better experience than getting yucky every weekend or spending saturday squatting alone.

Go on a hike, a scenic drive, a romantic get away, etc.

Still though, the more of you *******s that say this is a waste of time the better, less crowding around the limited attractions.

yep, this is the way to do it, lol @ guys like OP, likely couldn't get a job in the real world so he 'decided to travel' and then tell everyone how he isn't 'a slave to the corporate world bro' and how enlightened he is, lol it is just pure COPE, I imagine he about 35 yrs old, has $2 to his name and not a single qualification

Or more like you, and plenty of other people here, are projecting their own insecurities into the thread. Plenty of us travel and enjoy it and it has nothing to do with qualifications, job experience, education, etc.
