That would be a great draft for you guys. Love those first 5 picks but would be shocked to see Ebron and Matthews drop that far IRL. That site is fun as hell but not very realistic. Did one for the 49ers in our thread and ended up with like 20+ picks lol…pure mock draft sex(no homo)

Sorry to keep posting Barnwell articles, but this one mentions the Panthers, and is worth a read:

unfortunately I can't pretend I was the big sports fan I am today in 2003. I watch highlights/etc of that season all the time and damn I wish I could experience it as the fan I am today. This past season was the closest it's been. I mean even in 2008 did y'all just have a sneaking suspicion that we weren't for real? like Jake just wasn't right? Our run game was as dominant as it's ever been and the defense was outstanding but I don't know. I felt really good about this season and our chances, a lot better than I did in 2008.

edit - and IDGAF how he left. Jake is still 2nd on my all time fav athletes list, right behind Smitty.

That front 7 in 2003 was so Godly. So many amazing players.
In 2008 I thought we we definitely one of the two best teams in the NFC. The Zona game seemed like a damn lock.

Not sure if you guys have seen this, but according to Bill Voth there are some rumblings that Smitty could no longer be a Panther.

Gettleman had been non committal on 89 in recent interviews and apparently it's not just political interview speak.

Voth also said it's like 98% chance Gross retires

Hold on to your butts, could get wild this offseason

I've heard really strong rumblings that they won't sign Hardy. Won't franchise him and therefore likely won't pay him enough.

Are you two serious? ^^^^

That is literally the worst possible outcome. A nightmare offseason.

Gross I realize is out of our hands. Can't really do much about that except wait and see.

Smitty I realize is over the hill but an over the hill Smitty is still better than any other receiver on the roster.. And I feel us drafting a #1 and sliding him into the slot could rejuvenate him and he'd go ham.

Hardy.. Ugh. I do not want to overpay him BUT our success last year was built upon a dominant front 7. Mainly, a defensive line good enough to get consistent pressure rushing only 4. Losing him will be HUGE.

Why try and dismantle a #2 seed team?

It's not dismantling, they just don't have much cap room. Hardy would take up almost all of it. It'd be great if they could dump their bad contracts (Williams, Stewart, Johnson, etc.) but there'd be too much dead money. Hurney really killed the team with his terrible contracts. This is all especially true if they want to keep Cam and Luke.

They will have plenty of cap room. The cap is supposed to be going to 130.

…and the Panthers are supposed to be restructuring alot of contracts.

I highly doubt Smith is going anywhere or that Hardy wont be re-signed.

Cap is actually now supposed to go up to $132M

Rivera was talking at the combine about how they're going to be looking for a WR in the draft that can come in and contribute right away and one that can eventually replace Smith. that says to me that Smith will likely be around, although some contract restructuring will probably occur and it doesn't look like Lafell will be back. I think they like what they have in McNutt and King. I think they'll try and bring back Ginn, but if not King can replace him

I understand that we have to set up the cap to be able to resign Cam and Luke coming up shortly but letting Hardy walk would be huge since the pass rush pretty much took us from being a potentially sub par defense to an elite one just by itself. The snowball effect that losing that pass rush would have would be sickening to watch for us Panthers brahs so I hope they can do something to prevent that.

And Smitty will be back. Too much of a PR buzzkill to not make that happen. They'll work something out.

They've got plenty of cap room now, but they have a ton of unrestricted FAs and while they don't have to sign them all obviously, they need to fill the positions. Restructuring Johnson is good, don't get me wrong, but it generally just pushes his cap issues to next year or the year after. I definitely think they'll bring Smitty back, but I can really see someone like the Raiders going huge on a Hardy contract and the Panthers not wanting to blow all their cap space on him. I wasn't saying they won't get a contract done, just that I've heard rumbling that they won't.

Isn't the cap supposed to increase SIGNIFICANTLY following the new TV rights contracts kicking in this year? I'm okay pushing off cap issues because frankly they can keep getting pushed off indefinitely. All the best teams do it.

We have $21m in space. Compared to our $8m in space last year(and that was AFTER restructures). Once we start retooling contracts and make our cap-cuts I think we'll be in great shape(well, relatively speaking). I mean releasing Godfrey alone is going to give us $2.1m in cap space.

Cap is going up to $132M now. and i think if they designate Godfrey a June 1st cut, it will save $5M instead of $2.1M. basically, he gone

The cap will increase again next year, no doubt. In fact I bet it increases by about the same amount. I'm obviously fine with restructuring many contracts, but it's not some saving grace to do it. The contracts we restructured last year are affecting the cap this year (although considering the year we had that's ok).

But the fact is we have a number of terrible contracts. And those terrible contracts are on the books for another two years. For all the "cap space" we have, a lot of it needs to be held for Cam and Luke.
