Hate to lose Smitty but from a long term perspective it's the right call.
We're going in the right direction, I think. If we miss on Nicks I hope we take a WR in the first round (assuming there is no dominant OL falling to us there) and start looking to cash in on some top talent at that position for Cam. But the reality is that the way we are built, on defense and running, that we do not need to tie up a ton of money in aging receivers (with huge question marks) because that position ranks behind our DL, LB, DB, OL, QB/RB in terms of our team success. Spending a ton of money there is kind of foolish at the moment as we're not trying to change our entire offensive philosophy over one offseason when we were already 12-4 with what we had the year before.
I'd like to see James Jones come in as he fits what we need pretty much perfectly. A sure handed vet who knows his way around an endzone. Rumor mill a few years ago had us potentially trading DWill for him so I'm sure we're looking at bringing him in anyway.
Get your chins up, boys, we'll be okay. Saints lost a lot of firepower too, even with what they've signed thus far. Look long term and at least wait until after the draft to start freaking out.

$5.25M guaranteed. average doesn't really mean anything.
explain?
Mitchell seems like a clone of Ryan Clark, just younger and faster.
he's 33 already?

Hmmmm I'm wondering if we're planning on keeping Godfrey now? He was a decent safety even behind an average(at best) front 7.. it would be interesting to see his performance behind our front 7 now.
Only issue there is if we cut him, we gain $5.1 million in cap space. If we keep him, he counts for $7.1m in cap space..
And as for Mitchell, Keth.. he's a decent player. He's by no means a star, but there were few times I looked his way when the secondary made a mistake. He made a bunch of big plays and brought a nasty attitude to the secondary.

if he's a good run defender, that allows LeBeau to run his nickel packages with an extra CB instead of another safety. dude's paranoid about the run, which is ironic considering the players Tomlin is forcing on him

They're going to draft at least two receivers in the first three or four rounds. And probably sign a FA sometime soon. Cam will have receivers to throw to next year, relax. Losing Smith isn't going to make or break next season. Smith doesn't have that big of an impact anymore. I'm sad to see him go as well, and it's going to be weird not seeing him out there in a Panthers uniform every Sunday. But after thinking about it, it really was the right thing to do. It's time to bring in some new younger guys to start building chemistry with Cam. WR is deep this year and I trust that Gettleman and Rivera will pick some quality guys that can start on day 1.
Losing Smith for personal reason was stupid, now we have to pay him 3 million while he's on a nother team. Smith could of also helped groomed who ever we are drafting. And to be honest I'm scared Rivera and Gettlemen might go Corner or O-line instead of receiver.

and trading draft picks is one of the many ways Hurney destroyed this team. We'd have to give up a future first to trade high enough to get Watkins. This is one of the deepest WR drafts in a while; WE WILL BE FINE.

I think the organization wants to bring in both Jones and Nicks. So they can worry about other options in the draft suck as OT.

Oh, and you all remember Darin Gantt, yeah? Former Panthers beat writer, fired because he wasn't a yes man for the team..
@daringantt: As badly as Dave Gettleman bungled the 89 thing, giving Mitchell, Munnerlyn and Ginn the contracts they got elsewhere would have been worse.

What? Smith not a mentor? Smith helped everyone on the team from offense to defense, even Hardy said Smith was the one who inspired this team, and Smith didn't give a F**k is some one else got to shine he was more than happy throwing blocks for other receivers. Nobody is arguing he's not the same Smith but losing 3 million? FOR WHAT? He was still are best receiver and are main third down guy.
Now we lost Nicks SMFH, Gettlemen got to cocky thought he had it in the bank, now we have to settle for James Jones or Sanders who are nothing special, I'm not so sure those guys want to play here anyways.

You know what I absolutely fukking love about this whole offseason, though? I know it sounds all hocus pocus/bullsh*t but the underdog role really is legit. I normally don't believe in that kinda sh*t but the guys just play harder when no one expects anything. Everyone is going to hop off our nuts and we'll fade back into obscurity as "oh that's the team Cam plays on" not "oh that's the team with the 2nd ranked defense with like 3 final second comeback wins".
That make any sense whatsoever? lol.

It's really funny to see the difference in fan base reactions to the Smith and Wilfork situations.

I wonder if Laffel and Ginn said Smith didn't help them? cause I can't find it anywhere
LMFAO comparing Wilfork situation with Smith's
Vince is coming off an Achilles tear didn't play the whole season. And is taking up 11 million in Cap.
Smith was the panthers best receiver last season, and the patriots got Revis and Browner to help replace him, who have the panthers got???? Derek Anderson

Smith was not their best receiver, Olsen was. Who do they have to replace him? The draft and whatever leftovers, which is all they really need to replace the production of all 3 receivers.

Smith missed basically 2 games last season, he would of easily surpassed Olsen in yards. And I said receiver not tight end. So your saying 3 rookie receivers are gonna make up for the 3 WR that left?
BTW why do people keep avoiding the question, you would rather pay Smith 3 million to leave instead of paying him 7 million to stay?

^^^^ no one is saying that. Fukk. I think it's safe to say all of us would have loved if Smitty stayed… but he isn't, and forgive us for not jumping off a fukking bridge and giving up on the season because we lost an old, slow receiver that has been declining for 2 seasons.
