It would have broke his legs and pelvis or something along those lines. So pretty much tore him apart trying to get him out.

Reading how he got stuck gives me anxiety.

John picked a waist-high hole to explore. He wore a rainbow-colored, 1970s-style caving headlamp his father had bought for the family trips of his childhood. John went in headfirst, pushing himself along with his hips, his stomach, his fingers. Other cavers exploring this hole had found that only the nimblest of contortionists could navigate its tight corkscrew of rock.

John found no place big enough to turn his body around and leave the tunnel.
So he kept going , likely thinking he was in the Canal. When he saw a fissure that dropped nearly straight down in front of him, it may have appeared to widen out at the bottom, giving him a spot to turn around.
Rescuers believe John sucked in his chest to investigate the fissure, sliding his torso over a lip of rock and down into the 10-inch-wide side of the crevice. But when his chest expanded again, he was stuck. Struggling to free himself only made John slide deeper into the narrower, 8 1/2-inch-wide side of the fissure.
One arm was pinned underneath him , the other forced backward by an outcropping of rock. The rainbow headlamp bounced off.
Instead of widening so John could get out, the crack narrowed and all but closed.

Judging by the responses ITT, it appears we should have a team of miscers over there to devise a plan instead of highly trained individuals who have spent decades doing it.

at no point did any of that sound potentially fatal.

these guys are acting like their souls will just give up the ghost once they go underwater for a few feet

its borderline a form of superiority complex

human beings can live through some crazy crazy stuff, we evolved to be highly survivable. the multiple segments have breaks so there will be changes and variety where they can stop and communicate and give pep talks.

its like a long 2 hour hike with breaks that lead to you going home. im sure they can handle it and want to do it.they are good kids man...

so much this... clearly no one here has ever swam/dove/snorkled in murky water...let alone in darkness. You cant see 1 foot in front of your face even with a headlamp. Not only that, try doing it in a pitch black cave diving through jagged rocks.

not for nothing, every commercial diver i have ever met (construction) is in some way shape or form certifiably crazy. Like insane. Crazy mfers, every single one. Takes a special person to do it.

that... doesnt have anything to do with the extraction LOL

those kids dont have to see chit its just being navigated around by the seals who speak their language. probably gonna segment each section into the most simple instructions.

its not like we are assessing the danger in the casual sense of something you would do on your own. none of this is particularly safe but none of it is particularly fatal.

they are probably eating better now than they usually do lul the big threat was hunger and nourishment

once they get the energy they will make it. each one will meekly go one by one and all this talk about them being retards who “cant swim” will be silly

lol reminds me of when my buddy and I got our PADI certification when we were teens. We're in Hawaii, and we went out on this cool dive. There were a lot of people who weren't that great/not interested in really pushing themselves. Our guide/instructor was a former SEAL, and you could tell he spent too much time with his tank lol. After a quick dive he comes to my buddy and me and asks if we want to see something really cool (not his dink). we say OFC. We got to go through these old lava tubes, where it was small to the point of having to brace and guide yourself along the surfaces, and time the current to avoid your tank hitting/getting punctured just above you. It would be scary dark but then you would see these beautiful rays of light coming through cracks every so often to help guide you. It was amazing, but nerve racking as hell.

Did they pull his body out, or did they just leave it there when they poured concrete in to seal up the passage? What an awful, lonely final resting place.

It doesn't sound at all like they "almost" saved him. They got him freed up enough to get him an IV, but when there actually was movement, it was millimeters at a time. Also, rescuers believe it was the integrity of the rock that failed in the pulley rig, nothing that was caused by anyone's rigging efforts.

how did the kids get in that deep if on the picture it says that some areas are too tight to fit with an oxygen tank? surely they didn't crawl through that tight spot right?

Yah you also have to take note, the head cave rescuer Suzie who would be the farthest person beside John was 5’3 100lbs.

While Jon was 6foot 200lbs.
