They are excellent.

I would shoot you the recipe from one of my oldest cookbooks if you do decide to try.

And I got a couple dozen more lol. And red ones. Cherry. You name it.

I filled the 8x4 garden bed I’ll take a shot later.

I’m pleased with most my progress with growing so far bud it is getting very hot outside.

Mostly lettuce and spinach that is up in the photo. Beets are up, too, but they're tiny.

All my carrots, tomatoes, and peppers are planted. Some of the squash is in and most of the potatoes and cucumbers. I need to get the corn in, but the weather and my work schedule haven't aligned. We got around an inch and a half of rain a couple days ago and I'm going to have to wait for things to dry out a bit before I can plant. Still need to plant pumpkins, too.

This one. Came up on its own in the lawn. I had to clean up and clean out my vegetable patch and hey, might as well move that tomato.

^^^
The transplant.

And it's Memorial Day weekend. I could probably get 3 or 4 tomatoes, some peppers, maybe eggplant...I only spent $8 at my first stop because they had veggies marked down and I had a $5 reward.

The first Home Depot had some veggies 5/$10 and not much else. Second Home Depot I found a couple more vegetables and some 6 pack begonias.

Lowe's down the road had some green beans, an eggplant, and I splurged on a melon. Walmart had 4 packs of marigolds.

^^^
Cantaloupe on the left just in front of the rock. Shouldn't have, but it had fallen down between the racks and had been forgotten, but still watered because it was underneath. It looked too big and happy to leave behind. If it makes anything odds are a possum will beat me to it.

A few things are transplants from other parts of the yard [some sunflowers in the back, a couple of perennials] or carry overs from last year. Besides flowers I've got:

- 2 paste tomatoes, 2 slicers, and I think 3 cherry tomatoes [mystery tomato has one little fruit]

- 2 bell peppers, a shisito pepper, sweet banana, a poblano and two varieties of jalapenos

- one cantaloupe, one eggplant, and 9 green beans

- 2 types of oregano, two types of basil, marjoram, mint, rosemary, catnip, and parsley...I thought I had sage still, but I was wrong

Lookin good. I haven't been on enough lately. I'm still on spread with everyone in my gardening crew. Gonna have to spread some reps around...

I used to grow spices but haven't that last few years. Your last sentence reminded me I need to get some dill planted for making pickles.

It's dried out a bit here. I'm cautiously optimistic I will be able to get the corn in this weekend. I use a planter kind of like this:

https://www.domyown.com/chapin-garde...Best%20Sellers

and if it's too wet the soil just sticks to it.

I am getting some good fat eggplant. I’ll post it too in a bit. Tomatoes galore. Peppers. But my cucumbers have stopped growing. Sweet potatoes. Jalapeños I got several I am going to use to make a triple batch of Italian nachos for tomorrow afternoon. I’m having some nephews over to eat watch WWE Night of Champions live from Jeddah Saudi Arabia.

The garden is all in. I planted the last few squares of the square foot garden with dill.

The netting is over it because I've had birds digging holes. Lettuce is ready to start eating.

I also finished planting potatoes, onions, squash, yellow squash, cucumbers and corn. This year we did two areas to see which we like best. The one we've done the past few years:

The new expanded area:

The big one is mostly corn. Last year we had the kids sell some on the roadside. They weed it all summer and then get a little spending money in the fall.

Just a square foot garden update today:

Started eating lettuce and spinach over the weekend. Later in the year when I have tomatoes, carrots, and onions I eat a lot of salad, but with just spinach and lettuce green salad is kind of underwhelming. In the early season when that's all I have I just throw it is my breakfast protein drink for some extra leafy greens. The right half of the square-foot garden is beets and carrots. Beets are about ready to thin, carrots I'll give a week or two and then thin.

Still waiting for the corn/squash/cucumbers to start popping up in the main garden.

Weekly update:

Compare to the one above and you can see everything is just a week bigger. We've also been eating a ton of salad. I throw some greens in all my smoothies and we have salad for the family for at least one meal every day, and we're still not quite keeping up with the new growth. I probably planted a bit much. The 16 squares on the left are mostly lettuce and spinach with one swiss chard. The row second from the right is all beets and far right are carrots. The smaller lettuce and spinach (top left) were just planted a few weeks after the larger plants. I stagger them to try and get a continually new supply.

This box was planted a bit after the first one above. Carrots on the left, second from the left row is beats (with one carrot square in the front). Top right is beans, below them a bit of spinach/lettuce. Lower right is dill for pickles.

Need to get an update pic for the main garden. About everything is up there, too, but it's super weedy right now so it's hard to see anything useful from a picture. My wife directs the kids on most of the weeding, but she had a lot going last week so we are behind. The corn came up good, along with cucumbers, pumpkins, potatoes, etc.

Weekly update:

The spinach in the lower left corner is going to seed. Still tastes fine, but getting old and not as tender. Probably go through and pull it all for use in smoothies. I got the beets and carrots thinned last week (third and fourth rows from the left). I mostly plant stuff in the square foot garden in "squares". Beets I do 3x3 and carrots 5x5. I plant a couple seeds in each spot to try and make sure something comes up. I don't really worry about thinning stuff like lettuce and spinach, but beets and carrots always get thinned so that I have nice sized veggies to harvest.

Second box - still need to thin the carrots on the left, and the beets second from left.

Main garden area - most plants are doing great. I had a couple tomato plants die this year. I'm not sure what happened. They just kind of wilted away. Lower right is onions, left of that potatoes with some volunteer squash mixed in. Tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers on the far end.

Secondary garden plot. Mostly corn (couple sunflower plants front-center). I planted to some cucumber, pumpkin, and brussel sprouts around the edges to see how they grew over here. It's pretty weedy right now. Just been busy and haven't kept up.

Rainbow out the back door last night. The picture doesn't really do it justice. It was one of the best rainbows I've seen. There was actually a faint triple viewable to the eye.

Oh hey. Wondered where this thread went.

So that melon I picked up seems to be very happy and is blooming, though no fruit yet.

From 5/26:

And, like I knew already, eggplant really like my garden, though I only found one to plant starting so late.

I seem to have a dud tomato- these were planted at the same time/same place.

And my squash plants are all different sizes too. I have one smaller than this and another about the same.

And one that is way bigger and blooming.

Some of the peppers are producing. Nothing on the green beans. My brother said he has tried to grow green beans here multiple times and they don't make for some reason. Dunno if I will get anything much before it is just way too hot, but maybe they will survive to the fall if there is enough water.

Still on spread. Apparently, I've been stingy lately with the reps.

Lookin good. You like eggplant? I've done it couple times but I was the only one who ate them, so I eventually just stopped. When my stuff doesn't grow, I hit it with some fertilizer, lol. Not sure what happened to my tomatoes. The ones that died were in water walls. We left them on longer than needed, but last year the ones we left the water wall on did the best. This year they withered up and died. Maybe we didn't get enough water on them? The thing I've noticed is, it only takes a single foul up to really stunt a plant - letting it bake with no water, too much water, too much fertilizer. We had a week where my wife and I were both really busy, and I think that's when they started to die and we just couldn't recover.

Looking good.

Square foot garden is looking good. I've started pulling out the spinach as it goes to seed. We haven't been able to keep up on the spinach or lettuce even though I've been eating a ton of greens this year. I always throw some in more morning smoothie and then have a big salad with lunch. We went through and thinned all the carrots and beets. Thinning is my least favorite part. Well, that or weeding. The four squares nearest are dill and this is the first year I've planted that. We've done pickles the last couple years so I figured I might as well do my own dill.

Still a lot of weeds in the main garden. All the plants in the bottom of the rows are weeds. Peppers are coming slowly, tomatoes are doing well. Cucumbers are starting to grow. I need to get my tomato cages up, just running a bit behind.

Haven't posted the corn patch for a while. We got behind weeding it, so it has been a bit of mess. The last week or so we've been catching up:

The tops of the rows are mostly cleaned up. We still need to go through and get the bottoms of the rows, but thats not too bad because we can just get it with the hoe. There are 12 rows total there. The outside two on either side don't have corn. Second from the right is just weeds except for a couple sunflowers at the bottom. The far right has pumpkins in it. Still a bit of cleanup needed, but it's coming along at least.

Honestly, my wife and kids do most of the weeding.

If it's really overgrown, I have to join in because the kids aren't good at telling "plants" from "weeds". This corn was pretty bad because we got a lot of crab grass in it, and you have to look closely to tell them apart when the corn is small. I definitely sweat, but it's kind of therapeutic. Just basic no-thinking work with my hands. We generally freeze some and last year the kids sold a bunch roadside-stand style.

Nice except for the squash bugs which I had too in my garden beds.

All that cucumber I had popping out left and right are done. So I went from having more cucumbers than I knew what to do with to having to eat storebought ones.

I’m picking a dozen tomatoes daily though. That
Sweet banana peppers. Green peppers. and 1 melon starting to pop though.

I hate this fact but.. kind of prefer the store bought cucumber with the gmos and yunno all that other stuff in em’’ the documentaries such as Food Inc. .I want those natty food only tastebuds though. Lol

I got one zucchini. wahhh...[/QUOTE]It's off to a slow start this year. I got it in a little late and it's been cooler and wetter than normal for June. Corn seems to do the best with some heat. It should take off in the next couple weeks with the July temperatures. I hit it with fertilizer a couple weeks ago but might have been a little light. I just SWAGED it.

My dad got his in a little earlier and his has about 8" on mine. The last few years mines been taller than his and I've been talking trash about it. Mine is in a sunnier spot, so I have a built-in advantage, but I think he took it personally and is trying to show me up this year. Plus, he actually retired this year and has a lot of time on his hands.

Losing the leaves will set them back, but they might still make it. I've had a bunch make it that I didn't think would. I lost a couple tomato plants this year and I've never had trouble keeping tomatoes alive.

Feels. Crazy how random the results feel. It sounds simple to just plant and grow your own food, but it's a good bit of work and you probably need to over plant to try and ensure you get enough produce. One of my green bean patches curled up and died. The other two are still looking fine.

I’m picking a dozen tomatoes daily though. That
Sweet banana peppers. Green peppers. and 1 melon starting to pop though.

I hate this fact but..kind of prefer the store bought cucumberwith the gmos and yunno all that other stuff in em’’ the documentaries such as Food Inc. .I want those natty food only tastebuds though. Lol
Maybe it is down to the variety? IDK, but I noticed that the skin of the zucchini was thicker/harder than the store bought ones even though I tried to harvest it still on the small side.

What's your cucumber variety? The absolute best I've had are sweet success. We were shopping at a garden store maybe around 10 years ago and they had an old guy there at a station, kind of an "ask the gardener" setup. I think he was just a volunteer. Anyway, I go ask him what cucumber variety he recommends, and he says basically "Well, I don't think they carry them here, but the one I like is sweet success". I have to order them, and they seem to be less hardy than some varieties, but they are the sweetest (almost never bitter), crispest, cucumbers I've had.

I don't think we have squash bugs. We get some other stuff. Last year I had Colorado potato beetles covering some of my potatoes. I avoid pesticides and herbicides in the garden mostly, but I'm not a purist. If the bugs get bad enough I'll hit them with some dust:

The only things I've had to resort to pesticides on the last few years are my potatoes. We also generally have to spray our apples in the spring or else there will be worms in every one.

Picked my first cucumber today. Everything else (other than lettuce and spinach) is probably a couple weeks out. I was kind of surprised, and was just doing a random check. I need to take a closer look but I don't think I have any others that are close, but the one I picked today was about 8 inches. Tastes good. Tomatoes can't come soon enough.
