Sucks Lucas had to bobble that. he's one of the WRs i'm hoping can stick in some fashion. dude is 6'4

i think Brandon Williams could be Gettleman's Victor Cruz for us if he gets the playing time

So finally got around to starting to read my 2014 Football Outsiders Almanac. HIGHLY suggest y'all pick up a copy (it does both NFL and NCAA Div I and fantasy). Costs about $20 with shipping. Some notes about the 2013 team that I think most of us saw but they actually put data to:

3rd in Pythagorean Wins
3rd in total DVOA
6th hardest schedule
3rd defense DVOA
10th offense DVOA

So last year wasn't a fluke at all. That said…we had the worst deep passing game BY FAR. Only 621 yards, which is atrocious. Everything about the deep passing game was insanely terrible and by far the worst in the league. And most of it falls on the receivers. In 2012 we were top 5 in deep passing DVOA.

But the most interesting portion was the defensive backs. We played a deep zone (obviously), just letting teams throw underneath. We had the 3rd highest completion percentage against, but 4th lowest yards per completion. Football Outsiders recorded 91 "Hole in Zone" receptions, which was 16 more than the next worst, and 98 more as "Uncovered", which was 28 more than anyone else. That means that 1/3 of all receptions against were with no one in coverage at all. No other team was even close. This was fine due to our DL and Kuechly and Davis. Kind of makes me not worry about replacing all of our DBs, because they just don't really matter that much in general.

That said, Football Outsiders is iffy about projections and seems to think Caroline will win 7-9 games next year most likely.

This, and I see Carolina snagging another good WR in the upcoming offseason via free agency. The future is bright.

We won't have cap room to sign a "good" WR in FA. But that's alright, I'm fine with developing KB, hopefully draft and develop a decent #2 and another TE. Signing good WR in free agency is asking to massively overpay.

We've still got cap issues sadly.

One thing I'm preparing for with KB is that physical, relatively slow WR tend to take a year to learn how to generate space, so they tend to have slow rookie seasons (think Jeffrey, Hopkins, etc.). I think he'll be plenty productive, but it wouldn't surprise me to see him struggle a bit until next year, especially because teams are going to focus on him.

I'm hoping to see King get some reps earlier in the game, he got into rhythm and was great last week. Been completely underwhelmed with what I've seen/read about Underwood, so I'm really hoping King steps up into a solid WR3/4 role. Obviously really excited to see Cam play a bit tonight, really gonna be watching his footwork coming back… Panthers football on a Sunday feels soooo good!

Jarrett never had the talent KB has. I'm mostly just saying that if KB struggles somewhat as a rookie (especially early on), we should relax a bit and let him develop.

Like what I saw there:

- Cam was sloppy. Not surprising. Definitely misjudged KB on that deep pass. That's cool, that will get worked out.
- KB again looked pretty good. Was satisfied by Avant so far.
- JStew????? Ummm what???
- Defense looks the same as last year. Going to give up tons of passing yards but few big plays/red zone TDs.

Cam definitely was settling in, if they stay collected like that all season, playoffs are in grasp. Biggest challenge coming from Saints. Our secondary looks better, White is playing better and Cason… fuarkkkk

And in truth we don't need great DBs.

I was a little concerned with how we dealt with blitzes, but won't know until the season starts.
