Advice on external hard drive appreciated.
Tech nub, and appreciate any advice/tips.
Just need something 2-4 tb to have on the go to offload photo and video files from camera.
Not meant for long time storage, but still feel reliability/not breaking is the number one concern. Don't care about speed.
Seems the big 3 are Seagate, Western digital, and Toshiba.
Started googling the toshiba canvio options - partner, flex, and slim vs each other but there doesn't come up any good comparison vids as expected.
Also wondering about some being mechanical vs ssd in terms of not breaking down. The more expensive toshiba slim is mechanical.
Some sources say mechanical is worse since more points of failure/moving parts etc, others say ssd is less reliable. Any ideas?
It's not a big investment, but I value what I put on it greatly.... so asking misc for insights and recommendations.
Thanks brahs!

So any SSD will work, just don't buy anything that uses QLC memory.
It may be cheaper to buy an internal SSD and an enclosure.

You should also be sure to follow the 3-2-1 backup method:
The 3-2-1 rule is a data backup strategy. It means keeping 3 total copies of your data. You store them on 2 different media types. You keep 1 copy off-site. This prevents you from losing all your files if a disaster destroys your primary computer or local storage
I prefer using WD RED drives which are good for long term data storage. And I have a ton of RED drives all doing various levels of backup, some off site some another computer (proxmox).
https://www.westerndigital.com/products/internal-drives/wd-red-pro-sata-hdd
These prices are much higher than what I got just a year ago , look for deals for cheaper reds.
But the WD RED drives have never let me down (yet) and two of my red drives have like 90,000 hours of spin time (literally 7 years on and running, no issue yet).

So far I just had 2 seagate desktop drives (7TB?), but really didn't have too much I felt was worth spending money to protect.
Nowadays, when have gotten more into it (5 yrs+) and gotten better gear, I do feel I get some results worth protecting (photography). And if going some places, even if local, you spend a lot of time planning, researching etc so makes sense to protect it and not waste that effort.

True true, and thank you. Just scared to save/store "valuable" stuff on a stick.

He 100% needs something far more substantial than a shitty jump drive.
He needs a REAL solution, not a shitty thumbdrive. Hell, his DSLR memory cards are likely larger than that
And having lost some data way back in the day, and kicking myself for NOT following good backup strategies, I hope OP takes it seriously, even though "its just pictures". I wish I had those shots from 2006, but I don't.

80,000 hours my drives have been spinning for without a single hiccup. I expect they may soon start having issues as I approach 10 years being running, which is why I have like 3-4 OTHER red drives I use in my backup scheme.
But thinking some crappy thumbdrive is better than a HDD, is nuts. Especially for longer term storage.

Edit: dang seems it be almost 3x now in price. Insane to think that the memory card is as much as the entry level camera Nikon has - z50ii - with same processor and af system as the flagships.

seagate is DEFINITELY out. the other two really depend on the model both make OK drives...none are perfect. best to have a backup drive to a backup drive (even if it costs double).

For long term storage that you don't need to access everyday, BD disks are better than hard drives or ssds.
When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.
