Legit this is the only thing that will help. Rent is the biggest expense and she needs to take all that savings and put it to the credit cards. $1000 a month on the credit cards would have her out of it in two years.

If she's not a gold digger she'll agree to get a sustainable plan of paying the debt off and start sticking to it before marriage and your finances are tied together.

This this is highly unlikely and she will get mad bro and try a guilt/manipulate you into paying it:

it will take her at least 8 years to pay back her loans to get out of debt.

50k = 30k take home

20k - 7 = 120k

Every other person on the Misc makes 100k+ which is full of rotters, autists and people who cannot look at a girl without being obliterated off vodka.

She'll find some cuck to marry her and take it off her hands. Question is will you be that cuck?

I just finally paid off my credit cards and it took me a long time and I make more money than her.

I also get that there are a ton of kids who go off to college on their parents dime and don't look at it that way, but if you personally are taking out a loan for a hundred thousand dollars or so and more than ten years later are only pulling in $50k, you fuked up.

And I don't think that's at all harsh considering the other evidence we have. You have to be mentally deficient to ring up $19k in credit card debt. No one in her life is looking after her and that's really sad.
This is all relative to where you live. I lived in Toledo, OH most my life and 50k you're fine and can easily afford a nice 4 bedroom on 2 acres for $150k. In Denver a townhouse is $150k and I would be broke as shiit on $50k.

Depending on what her degree is and her location it could be perfectly fine.

"The system" - you speak as if it is some ominous thing that goes around, kidnaps youngins and throws em into slavery. I agree that a lot of 18 yr olds going off to college do not have a full understanding of the debts they are taking on, is true.

However, the victim mentality of the system fukked me over annoys me. Ya sure, you made a stupid mistake when you where younger, a lot of us do. Figure out how to pay off your mistakes and learn from it. Don't blame "the system" for you voluntarily going to school and spending $70k.

I went to a for-profit tech school that charged the max amount. What did I do? I went to a community college first, knocked out 2 years then transferred into the tech school and finished it off. Only been paying on student loans for 3 years, but it is going down. I wouldn't say my college debt is bad debt. I went from retail making $30k/year to making a chit ton more. My upward mobility is high. So I'd say my college debt isn't bad. But agree if you got 70k loans for underwater basket weaving or some fukkin social degree that doesn't pay chit, then yes. You made a bad investment.

You want a house? You're going to be in debt unless you live with your parents for 10+ years to save up. Good luck renting and saving enough to pay cash for a house. You should be able to buy a house at 60, all the while you spent the last 40 years renting and throwing all that money away.

The thing about debt and borrowing money, is finding out how much you're truly going to pay. If you take a loan out on a car for $20k 0%APR, you're going to pay $20k. If it's 9%APR on a 48 month loan term - you're going to pay an extra ~$4k. On a realistic 3%, same loan/term you pay an extra $1,200. Not bad if you think about 4 years of paying, that's $25/month.

If you can borrow money, not pay much extra and this opens you up to more cash flow for other investments and/or savings then it's an excellent idea. People fuk up when they take out too much debt at too high interest and don't get a good ROI.
I dropped out of university to avoid debt slavery and i never went for a job anyway i went to progress in my sport. I enjoy business because if done right, you don't have to trade your time for money, you have whats known as freedom. It worked out for me because i simply know how to make money. Real money, like 500 dollars a day plus more money. Money that can't be acquired by working for someone else. So lets get that outta the way, im no victim, no college brat. Im a winner.

Moving forward, I will blame the system. Kids starting from 7th grade to 12th grade gets the brainwashing from every angle. "What college are you going to?" From the teachers, guidance counselors parents and peers all everyone knows is that college is the next step. It is a fundamental brainwashing technique. When i was 18 along with everyone in the school was bred to believe that if you didnt go to school you were going straight to mcdonalds to become a failure. Idk how old you are but if you are under 25 you know this as true.

Why do you think she along with hundreds of thousands of kids make these bad decisions to sign their life away for a piece of paper? She along with hundreds of thousands and all my friends weren't making a conscious decision at 18 years old. It was never their choice. It was society choosing for them. Maybe you lucked out and picked the right major and found the right opportunity thru a family friend or something. I honestly don't care.

All i care about is facts. And the fact is...college all across america increase tuition cost EVERY SINGLE YEAR by 7%. And the government and subsidiaries who writes the checks green lights it. Everything happens for a reason. And right now this millennial generation is filled to the brim with debt slaves who know they will never be able to pay it off. Hmmm, the only loan that can't be bankrupt is a student loan hmmm.

Lawyers coming out of law school with a quarter mili in debt getting 60k jobs as lawyers assistants. You think colleges are gonna put a sign on the front of the campus saying "temporarily closed bad economy no jobs". LMAO

Its the most profitable most succesful business model in the country. Just brainwash the upcoming generations(customers) to buy your product( a piece of paper that cost a house) fear monger them by telling them if they don't have this piece of paper they will be failures...get their friends and family in on it...

Same situation. Never had bad credit but had debt. Now I'm out of all that looking back it's easy to see where I went wrong.

She will be working for the rest of her life to pay off the debts she currently has plus the future debt she most definitely will incur. Unless she gets on a budget and sticks to it, it's gonna be rough for her.

Well if she's incurred that much debt then logically she lives in a place with a high cost of living.

GJDM for being in business and being a successful entrepreneur. That's a fine lifestyle for some, not everyone. Don't kid yourself like it's an easy button win to life, it's not. Also you blanket statement everything, not everyone who went to college and got a degree is a sourpuss jaded person. I worked construction and retail. I said fuk that, learned a valuable skillset in college and make bank.

Sure people pressure college because at least college is better than working at McDonalds 40 hours a week. Not everyone who doesn't go to college becomes some successful businessmen millionaire. Not everyone who goes to college comes out a working professional. Not everyone wins. At least if someone goes to college and comes out with a degree, they have something.

Sure - I could go into consulting with the network of professionals I've built over my career but I don't want those risks, at least not now. I need stability in an already proven business that can harness my skills and allow me to provide for the company and therefore my family.

To be in business and an entrepreneur:
-At first, this doesn't make enough (unless you're one of the rare individuals who had a great idea, got investors and up and running quickly.)
-So you make chit, until your business hooks in, steady clients, etc.
-You work way more than 40 hours a week, you are married to your business.
-You fuk up and make bad choices, investments. You're done. Gotta start over.

Now, through all the struggles and long-term of a successful business, it's ideal. You hire people to take care of your business and you only do some oversight and make sure the company moves in the right direction. You spend your time going golfing or vacationing, etc.

I plan on consulting and getting my own business going when my kids are out and I don't need that stability and they don't need to depend on me. This also gives me plenty more time to continue networking professionally and building relations with certain businesses that I can hire upon my needs.

$19k in credit card debt?

Abandon ship, OP. She lives way beyond her means.

As someone who takes advantage of cash back and rewards cards, I'm thankful for people like that. Their irresponsibility subsidizes my cash back and rewards. :3

It's gonna be really rough

Assuming the averages/typical structure and rounding of numbers:

4% - Student Loans - 10 years
4% - Car - 4 years
15% - Credit Card

Your GF's interest would be in this year alone (this is JUST interest and NOT including repayment of principal, which overtime will reduce the loan amount to 0)
$2800 - Student Loans
$800 - Car
$2850 - Credit Card
$6450 - Total

For principal
$7000 - Student Loans
$5000 - Car
????? - Credit Card

You would be paying $18450/year to meet regular payments of interest/principal and that's EXCLUDING your credit card repayment which is by far the most important to get rid of first as it's the highest interest rate.

At 50K a year and 20% fed/state taxes, your GF's take home is $40K/year. If she is living and looking after herself, it will be very difficult to get rid of her debt. She should obviously remove most variable expenses (coffee/entertainment) and try to reduce fixed ones too (move in with parents as that can easily save her $5k-20k+/year)

EDIT: It should be noted that she may have higher rates of interest than average because of the amount of debt she has, so she could very well need to pay far more. She should may want to try debt counselors or calling her creditors to try to refinance. You'll definitely want to do a very in-depth analysis of her budgeting and start slashing things left and right. I do think that she could be able to get rid of her debt over time, but it is going to be a long and hard process. If you and her are serious about marriage, you should talk with her and tell her that if you guys marry, then her finances will actually have to be in order as it will dramatically impact you guys in the long-term, esp. if kids are an option.

TOTALLY correct man. Jesus. We were all BRAINWASHED as kids to take XYZ path. I really can't blame my ex for doing what she did...going to a prestigious school, majoring in something she was passionate about, and graduating.

I did everything "wrong". Didn't complete my degree, spent years struggling to find a job that would give me a chance with my minimum experience, having a chip on my shoulder because I didn't have a degree like my peers. I had some debt from college, like I said maybe 14K. I went to an in-state school and had a partial scholarship. I wasn't mentally "ready" for college which is why I dropped out. Maybe I will never be.

Today I'm 32, six figure salary. I may have less than $1500 in debt right now, 401K growing at a 6.5% return and have personal savings. Much of my career experience is me working through the years, grinding hard to get to the positions I wanted.

I feel bad for Milleneals that were told to go to school, find your passion, you will be successful. That's not the case. There are some people out there with degrees working wage jobs and unfortunately the biggest failure of the education system is keeping the big secret as to how money works. NO ONE TELLS YOU THAT. You have to learn on your own.

Totally ****ed. Back to the topic of OP though I would need someone financially literate to settle down with. I can't imagine working out of debt again.

What are her parents like? Do they live above their means? What type of house are they in? Jobs? What do they say about her debt and spending?

Sounds like this girl hasn't broken down her income and expenses to find out exactly where she stands.

Does she have any equity in the car or is she upside down?

Dumb cuck is going to pay for that for the rest of his life when she stops working.

Financial literacy isn't taught in school though. It's like playing a game and learning the rules as you go along.
different topic but the parents not the school should be responsible for teaching kids financial literacy. Teachers can preach all the good financial habits till kingdom come but if at home the parents are living beyond their means and don't know the value of a dollar then the kids won't learn chit. Your parents should be teaching you good habits so that you are prepared by the time you are on your own. Mine did and I had 0 student loans out of college without any financial assistance from my parents. Other than a Mortgage I have 0 debt as well.

Anyway yeah sounds like your gf has terrible spending habits and unless you are willing to help her pay it I would move on OP. Debt that size is not a joke or something you can just look over.

My girlfriend was in $15-$20k from college debt and I seriously questioned her priorities in paying it off. Seems like there's a mindset amongst a lot of Americans that 'debt is normal' and paying it off isn't a priority. Of course she wants a nice home, kids etc. and says that stuff is more important than money. Who the fcuk can get a nice home and raise kid without money though? lmao

One would think but I'd be willing to bet she has a closet full of clothes, purses and shoes.

This thread is depressing. I have same amount of debt as the sloot in question, but the biggest purchase I made since I graduated (1yr) was $500...

My parents tried to prevent me from having debt. My sister has a full ride at West Point so we are good. My parents finances I worry about. Not really debt related just other stuff that happens.

is she going to be able to come out of this debt?
shes 109k+ (emphasis on +) in debt

making 50k I hope she has advancement eligibility in her career

It would take her until she is at least 50-65 to pay that off if you or someone doesn't help her and she doesn't have career advancement.

Nobody would loan to me growing up. Not even for student loans, nothing. I'm now wealthy as fuwark and debt free. If I keep playing my cards right, I'll be loaning money to banks soon.

It's called the rat race man. Many banks and other businesses( and the owners of these institutions) are getting insanely rich from it. People don't understand how easily it is to get into debt and how hard it can be to get out.
