Thought I may as well ask another question as as I see you are still replying in this thread.

Did you apply to multiple departments at once? Because I know if you apply to one and don't get in that time for whatever reason you can't apply again for 2 years or so.

whats the problem with it? nothing wrong with photographing a police vehicle in public or on private property, i don't work there anymore, and I was allowed to bring the patrol car home with me on days I worked.

So you think it's a lot easier to get in now? It seems like it may be different now because PD's need to be more careful with who they choose to hire because of all that's going on in the news now. For every PD you apply to, you need to travel to that city for the interview process, etc etc though right?

i think it is easier now if your intentions are good and your heart is pure. when i was trying to get hired i was competing against a lot of dudes coming back from afghan and iraq and it was hard to compete with that kind of military experience. now a days it seems like departments would rather take the kid fresh out of college, and not the guy who served 3 tours overseas but has no education. being a cop isn't so much about good tactics and aggressive crime fighting anymore. now its more focused on community spirit, problem solving, and criminal rehabilitation. law enforcement leaders have gone soft because they are absolutely terrified of getting sued or becoming the next ferguson pd.

Trust me.man I don't have a problem with it i was just wondering. I've just seen and experienced first hand what ******* detectives and Internet low lives will do.

For example I posted a pic of me and my girlfriend that wasn't even on ******** (the only social media I have) and got an email from corporate 2 days later about some guy complaining to them about me being anti-LGBT and homophobic.

Maybe I was unlucky but I stay precautious now, just trying to help a brother out.

I have not noticed any of the police hate being a problem in my career yet. I mean of course people hate us and pull the race card and say we shoot innocent people etc... but that has never bothered me.

What does bother me is I did not become a cop to have 90% of my job performance to be based off how many people I pull over and how many drugs I find in peoples cars. I took the job to serve the public, help people who need help, aid in investigations, patrol to deter crime, and if something seems fishy or a car is breaking a law I will pull it over. I have noticed most departments pride on officers who go out and spend hours looking for license plate lights that are out, people that dont turn their signal on prior to XX feet and give them pats on the back for their "statistics" since the word quota isnt allowed anymore.

The administration is the worst to work for. You are working for cops acting like cops to you at work. They have almost no real managerial experience and the liability they have on them makes them only concerned for their own ass and half of them just want to get a new title and more power so they will throw you under the buss and write you up/fire you for anything.

Then theres the hours. Obviously you work in a good place with good pay but most departments officers are making bottom tier middle class pay to top tier lower class pay. To subsidize they work 2nd jobs, pull security jobs 20+ hours a week, contract work, or do overtime at their department

Lastly if you ever want to work somewhere else everything you have ever done at work is getting sent to the new department, they are going to contact everyone in your life and question everything about you like you are the scum of the earth even though you have been a cop already for 5+ years, and if you forget one thing, leave out one thing even an ex girlfriend or a place you lived, or if you got written up at work once over something stupid, they will blacklist you and it will be known to every place you apply for in the future because every police application asks you to list where you applied for before and the recruitment team/officer calls them to ask for information.

It is one of the most unhealthy work enviroments out there and structured to put stress and hardship on the officers.

True, more departments are trying to practice the "community policing model", but im sure there are still certain departments more geared towards the traditional model still, like the LAPD, which is more paramilitary, and some other higher crime large cities.

Appreciate the responses btw.

I'm in the same boat as you OP... Been a cop for 3.5 years and my last day is in July. Too much politics and BS with my department at the supervisory level (i.e. Let this drunk guy drive home because you stopped him 1 block outside of your patrol zone, but still in your jurisdiction), coupled with the rapidly declining environment and support for police, no thanks Jeff.

das it mane. exit strategy in place? its actually pretty amazing how many people have privately approached me to get info on what I'm going to do when i leave. I'd say about 20% of the people I work with are ready to leave immediately if they can find something else.

I've got enough money to float me for a little bit but I'm looking to get into the automotive industry. I've been able to make some good connections over the past years outside of law enforcement just in case.

nice thing about LE is that you come out of it with a lot of skills. communication, stress management, conflict resolution, executing procedures properly... to name a few. could probably apply these to a variety of corporate positions. insurance investigator? sales? management?

been out of le about 6 years now.

yeah many cops are great but it's always those jerk few cops who make the job horrible. Big shocker, usually the ones with brass.

PD's act like military but arne't military. Half or more have never been in the military. You can't have it both. Plus unlike the militar, people can get fired.

The ones with tenure love to mess around with the rookies. Plus everyone wants to protect their pension and job security and blame others. While city only cares abourt not being sued, not the officers.

unf supply & demand ruins the cop profession. There are literally 10,000 others out there who want and could do your job. you're 'replacable' (well i wasn't cuz i had a degree and it skills but anywho). Cops are simply tools of the govt. Easily replaced and usually are, at least in the beginning.

It's tough until you get tenure move up, then it''s goat. I have more $ and fun with enterprise it consulting now. Office job, can't brag, but love the money and lotsa jobs in case you need to quit. No stupid 3 months of bg checks and other b.s.

but if you get a great pd, great chief and get a few years in so you're set - it can be great. No constant graveyard shifts and be told what to do all the time

Dont bank on any of those skills lol. Every job is stressful and requires communication. The private sector is even more competitive.

No constant graveyard shifts and be told what to do all the time
how did you get hired in that position ? I would love a damn office job where I could work normal hours and actually have time to go to the gym and not only get 4 hours of sleep, or be able to have relatrionships where my GF doesnt get to see me every other weekend and ends up slooting because her friends invite her out every weekend and I cant go because of work, where I can throw on clothes in the morning and not worry if I have to shave and throw on 40lbs of gear that has to be precisely placed, where I am held accountable for the work that gets done and not cross examined daily on performance, conduct, and procedures by the public, by my 10 bosses, and by the city goverment employees.

nope its even worse in small towns. harder to hide yourself when off duty/personal life.

if i ever moved it would be to a much warmer state or closer to the ocean. been in CO my whole life though. not sure if i can ever leave at this point.
If you build it they will come.
