Go figure. This "depression" is nothing more than unachieved goals (or no goals were ever even set) being compared to the lucky ones who made it. We all compare our lives to our peers to gauge our success, but people spend too much time keeping tabs on their peers making sure that they themselves are on track and forget to set up their personal goals.
Personal goals and hard work keeps depression at bay, I think. You can call it a distraction, but that's what life is all about; distracting yourself to stay busy and reach your goals while having fun in-between.
Edit: well that's my opinion, anyway. I felt so beaten and down when I was comparing myself to others. Then I set my goals and went into overdrive. Ive been so distracted with my goals that I don't compare myself to others, anymore. I have a co-worker who is in the same position as me, but he's still after the material cookie cutter things but still warns me to finish my degree. I told him that there are people out there with no degrees making money. There are people with degrees making no money. There are also people working on their degrees making zero connections with zero plans to get themselves in their desired field of study.
Depression is easily cured with planning. Fuk, even working out kills depression through fatigue, rest and the thought of recreating yourself.

Social media is the biggest cause IMO between ruining the dating field and allowing you to easily compare your life against others.

I was just in Shimane, Japan brahs (half jap), on my grandparents farm (they just passed away this year, I was paying respects for a month, reuniting with family etc.). And the close knit and farming/primitive technology community was the happiest place I had experienced in fukking years, I forgot that a world like that even existed SRS. The people were all like one big family, even people you never met before. Everyone greets eachother, visits and gives eachother food/gifts etc. BRB go to a store to buy some stuff, chat with the old lady and she hands me free organic vegetables (the first of the season), as a kind gesture saying I am like her grandson. The community is so old school that there are still giant shops like blockbuster in the city 30 mins away. BRB do farmwork and then go to the hotsprings and intertwine with the community and eat a 5 bowl soba set in the evening for 1000 yen.
You can buy a house like this
there alongside a farm for like $15,000 (If you are lucky) with a fully modern interior ETC. Srsly considering moving there and living off the land as an option in the future if the western world goes to chit.
I remember reading about highschool reunion stories, where a super keener ended up getting everything he worked for (6 figure business job, HBB wife etc.) but was the most miserable person at the 10 year reunion. At the 20 year reunion he came back, after reevaluatinf his life, divorced his wife and lived his dream of working a farm and was happy as can be. Im starting to hate this media driven and hypercompetitive superfical state we live in. It was quite an eye opener.

I think technology is now turning around and about to encourage real world social engagement.
Augmented reality (eg. smart glasses, hololens, etc), means that people can both experience the virtual and real world simultaneously.
People won't be starting at a phone, they can be looking around at other people and their environment whilst having the benefits of the smartphones/internet. (It's still in the early stages).

I think what aids social isolation via technology is that your focus is completely on the virtual. With the mix you will have to take in the input of the environment, so you will be less likely to just focus on the virtual.

Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy **** we don't need. We're the middle children of history. No purpose or place.
We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off.

The new trend nowadays is for people, particularly men, to wear their feelings on their sleeve when previously you would ignore them.
Why are we convinced this is the right way to do things when it's really only come about in the last 50 years or so?

I think the main reason is that it's easier to get caught up in comparing ourselves to other people and not having goals for your life. Everyone I talk to has no quantifiable goals and this feeds their depression like a motherfuucker. Combine that with being inundated with people's highlight reels (social media) and comparing those images and posts to your own shortcomings... it takes a strong willed man to be able to ignore the noise.
I also believe that people don't know how to "fail." That is to say, get negative feedback from a situation or circumstance and use that in a constructive way / for growth. Instead they dwell on a failure and let it define them. This is such an important lesson to learn as we grow older. We can learn from every situation, and applying those failures helps us succeed later on. But you can't let a failure keep you out of the game for too long, or else it's just not advantageous in any way.

It's because our attitude to depression and mental illness has changed drastically over a fairly short period of time.
People are told that depression is simply an illness, which in turn convinces the sufferers that there's no remedy beyond medication. So instead of trying to sort out their "depression" (which is most likely not even true depression) via lifestyle changes, people just continue with their ****ty existence on a cocktail of pills.
It's fukked, m8.
I know somebody that considered themselves "depressed" and went on medication because they broke up with their girlfriend and felt sad. 30 years ago they'd have been told to man up and move on, but in today's pussiefied society everyone is a special snowflake.

People haven't changed.
It's just big pharma paying off doctors to overprescribe medications and the FDA being in their pockets. It's all big business pushing the depression epidemic.

Another reason for the rise of depression imo is the lack of grit and stoicism, coupled with an arrogant sense of entitlement. This is all comes from feminism and the poosyfied generation

Nowadays, the majority of people have unrealistic expectations for all aspects of life, and end up living day to day trying to find any way to become unconscious whether that's from drugs or alcohol instead of trying to find their purpose.

I think for guys, social isolation is becoming an ever greater problem. I don't have hard evidence for this, but I very much doubt there was such an insanely large amount of men describing themselves as "foreveraloners" 50 years or so ago. Most men had jobs which required interaction with others, most got married early and started a family, etc. Now we have an ever growing community of jobless, 20-something virgins who never could have expected their life to turn out this way.
I truly believe that lack of social interaction (particularly with women) is by far the biggest cause of depression in men, and seems to be worsening.

Women have ALWAYS had their pick of the litter, and had more options the better looking and younger they were. Tinder is just the personification of that fact. The heart of it is, placing your happiness in the hands of what someone else thinks or feels about the way you look and conduct yourself is never a winning strategy.
