It depends on their location.

There are areas of the UK where there are big (often poor) Pakistani communities and they often have pretty literal interpretations of Islam. In those communities, as you say, there is a lot of hypocrisy eg. degenerate guys operate child sex rings while girls get killed for 'dishonouring' their family etc.

From what my dad tells me, Pakistanis in the UK used to be relatively progressive until the whole ME crisis started and gulf Arab states started to export more radical forms of Islam around the world. Sad to see, really.

My ex used to tell me that her and her muslim friends dressed conservative, but dressed normally outside of city lines and/or aware from family members. She also told me many have developed ways of meeting up with boys, and other haraam things without their family knowing. It was baffling to me at the time.

IME being a muslim is largely a social identity for most muslims. However, that doesn't necessarily mean that it's trivial to them emotionally, it's just treated as social identity rather than principles to guide conduct, they can be violently offended if you criticize their 'people'.

However IME many tend to become more religious once they get above 40.

Serious question.

Are there extremes in islam that go as far as adultery being permitted to a child and sacrificing yourself for your God? I hear all these extreme ends but I never confirmed it with someone who's muslim.

Fully agreed. I would add that a lot of girls keep up the charade to keep their parents happy.

I think, as they get older, maybe they start to see the value in more conservative behaviours.

That's interesting, but IME the Barelvi muslim community can be as conservative as the Deobandi and Salafi muslim community.

I think how those gulf states possibly influence the UK muslim community as a whole (if what your dad says is accurate) is that they emphasized identity politics. Most muslims I've known, regardless of sect, declared an affinity to Islam above all other aspects of their identity.

There are extremes in all arenas. Religion is no different. That's why interpreting and then implementing religious text to your own life will take a lifetime! And even then it won't be perfect.

Adultery on all accounts is forbidden. So is fornication.

But I return to the original message. What is religion? What does it mean to believe in The One God. Are ritualistic performances essential to belief?

The answers vary from person to person.

There is definitely also a philosophical shift towards the more restrictive social aspects of Islam.

The point about identity politics is also valid and is exemplified by the 'Islam is under attack' mantra that these gulf states have exported in order to militarise Pakistanis and recruit them into terrorist groups.

It's also worth mentioning how the collapse of much of Britain's hard industry lead to mass unemployment in Pakistani communities, causing them to regress and become more conservative, as well as later waves of Pakistani immigrants coming from more impoverished and backwards areas such as Mirpur (Mirpuri immigrants often being chief culprits when it comes to sex abuse rings).

Tell me about it. Some of these girls are stunning, especially the ones who wear hijabs w/ matching makeup. Those Eastern features + tan skin can look hnnnng.

I'm Sikh so I'm scared that, if I make a move on one of these girls, I'll get jumped by her brothers Mustafa, Mohammed and Karim.

I like encourage people to challenge muslims, some advice:

If you want to try to encourage muslims to question their religion, I'd plainly ask them if they've compared Islam to secular philosophies and scientific theories;

The story of Adam and Eve to evolution biology.

Islamic values to humanist values.

Etc.

IME most muslims compare Islam to other religions only.

Aaaaaaaaand there it is. Prime example on a religious person way of handling a confronting debate. You know deep down how gibberish religion is. C'mon you're not that stupid. You're just doing it because of continous brainwashing from parents and likeminded friends. Some day when you get older and more independant, when you'll have a chance to get some distance from it, you'll come to terms of reality. Its utter BS.

Oh and it was so funny that I told you to study something else besides religion`? I was just doing you a friendly favor. Really huge LOL to that. *rolls eyes*

I feel sorry for people like you. You have been indoctrined since you where born to be this and that. Its a sheer coincidence that your parents are muslims, so they brought the stupidity on to you. Specially when you're a girl. Doomed to be some kind of social gimp/masochist to your muslim society. You can compare it to the stockholm syndrome. I bet you feel a bit proud protecting your religion that have you in bondage. Make daddy proud.

Relax, don't think too much. I'm not here to debate religion. I'm here to answer any questions on what it feels like to be raised by a Muslim father as OP so negatively portrayed.
So adultery is not permitted and sacrificing yourself for a God is preached/practiced (to an extreme end) correct?

How about you not assume things and just ask me? I live alone, am completely independent, some of my siblings have apostatized. There is absolutely nothing holding me to my beliefs other than my own person choice.

Hmm. Since you can't seem to have a respectful conversation with someone, this is my last post to you.

Take it easy homie.
Thus let me live, unseen, unknown;
Thus unlamented let me die;
Steal from the world, and not a stone

Oh and it was so funny that I told you to study something else besides religion`? I was just doing you a friendly favor. Really huge LOL to that. *rolls eyes*

I feel sorry for people like you. You have been indoctrined since you where born to be this and that. Its a sheer coincidence that your parents are muslims, so they brought the stupidity on to you. I bet you feel a bit proud protecting your religion that have you in bondage. Make daddy proud.

doesnt really matter. what matters is if you can handle being disowned by family and friends by leaving islam. Im sorry if Im being harsh, srs. But I have a hard time seing people in the west where internet and books are easy to get, yet some people still choose to still continue with this caveman thinking. My thoughts go to all the people who have experienced cruelty and pain due to not being accepted by the eyes of religion, its like spitting in their face. Its no different than Hitler and his fun friends, excluding certain people because of this and that. Im just trying to "wake you up". Have a good day.
