Lived in FL my whole life and seen many gators. For the most part they will not bother you. But there are some rules to follow. The big one being that you don't hang out in waterways in the evening time.

I can imagine for someone out of state who's never seen a gator in the wild, not knowing how common they are around here. Therefore letting your little one wonder onto the shoreline while you are close by doesn't seem like a bad idea. Unfortunately this family has learned the hard way.

I would add too that it being Disney and all, tourists just assume that everything is 'safe'. Surely Disney wouldn't put a beachfront on a waterway with chairs if it weren't safe, right?
They weren't even just walking a long the shore they were in foot deep water almost 90 minutes after sunset.

everything makes sense now. If you asked 99/100 people in the US what animal could eat them if they visited Florida and you would get Alligator or snake as an answer (both of which would be valid along a body of water in this scenario)

Also you're pretty smart for visiting another country and not even doing the most basic research into what you're getting yourself into. I'll wager every single travel info site in the world will reference gators in Florida.

exactly. then again, people from florida or grew up and lived in florida, we know this. we know gators are everywhere. they get in any body of water in florida. maybe im a minority in this but if im going somewhere ive never been in my life, i try to learn as much as i can about the place and its surroundings and when you see signs telling you not to do something specific, it's for reason. for that 1% chance something like this could happen. it's a damn shame.

Gators know for the most part not to bother with a adult humans but youre not gonna train all gators to just pass up an easy meal that is a toddler. Gators like small mammals

Sad for the parents because they were just oblivious to the real danger of Florida waters. I woundnt call Disney resort water "Gator infested" its just not strictly controlled and they do sneak in.

I am willing to give them a pass. Like I said in my previous post, there are other variables that could have come into play here.

I am a parent of three boys. I am the most cautious person there is when it comes to them and water. So for me to allow my kids to play in water at 2, they would have been in my arms. But I could see where the father could have got caught up in the 'magic' of being at Disney and allowing Jr to splash in the water just before bed. Not saying that I would allow that, but I have seen many parents do a lot of stupid things around water. Water seems to make rational people stupid at times.

small humans yes our shoulders are too wide as adults through except for the really rare super large snakes they'll find dead bodies that have been constricted and killed and see teeth marks along the shoulders where the snake tried to get the victims shoulders past its mouth but couldn't and eventually gave up. Snakes eat their victims from the head first generally.

in florida, there are pythons up to 16-18 ft. long. far big enough to swallow a child. possibility of swallowing a small adult as well. the largest animal found in a python in florida was a 74 lb. whitetail deer.

I agree tragic accident but definitely an accident that could have been avoided.

Sure, it's tragic and this story hopefully will be a warning to all other visiting families since I'm sure it's international news at this point. I don't know how I would react emotionally if the same thing happened to my child.

Spent 8 summers in Florida, been to Disney multiple times. How in the absolute fuk do you not understand that alligators are fukking everywhere in that state? I knew that chit when I was 5 years old.

It's a little kid. What does a 2 year old know about alligators?

It's the dumb, retarded parents who are at fault. They should be sued for negligence or just lined up and executed via firing squad.
