What kind of fuking retard doesn't know there are gators in just about every body of water in Florida? It's 100% impossible to make a waterway alligator free in Florida, especially if its Disney where they own acres of swamp that connect to these lakes. These things can walk miles to get from lake to lake. I bet a 1000 gators have cycled through the property this month alone, most of which would love a 2 year old.

Pretty much this.

Not to mention Disney is literally in a swamp meaning there is likely going to be a higher population of gators. But I'm kind of with Fozzy on this one, Disney should be advertising gators are everywhere especially near water. Since I'm from Florida, I kind of forget that it's understood that gators are in every body of water. Considering how much a tourist destination Disney is, I'm actually surprised there aren't more warnings against gators.

This is an interesting point, although it doesn't matter what explanation is offered. ("Do Not Stick Your Fork In This Outlet: It Would Make Us Sad" still means DO NOT STICK YOUR FORK IN THIS OUTLET.)

The sign I saw said "Please, No Swimming", and I doubt the difference between swimming and wading would hold up. However, I could agree that stronger language "Keep Out" or "Do Not Enter" would be more appropriate.

I find this entire debate somewhat entitled. What kind of jerk is on someone else's property, sees a sign that says "No Swimming - Deep Water" and says "nah, I can handle deep water, this is fine"? It says No Swimming. It's not your lake. It's not up to you. Don't try it, and don't come up with some lame pedantics about how you weren't technically swimming.

If I have a pool and I say "no, you may not swim at my house, it's not safe" and I come home and find you "walking and playing" in my pool because you decided on your own that it's perfectly safe, I'm calling the cops. It doesn't matter why. Maybe my reasons had nothing to do with safety and I was just being polite. It's my pool, not yours.
Nah, fukk that. I’m not doing that.

Surely there's a reason for that. People who live in the U.S. know(or should know) that gators and crocs live in that part of the country. You can't argue the semantics of a sign. If it even hints danger, stay the f*ck away. Just like you don't have to live in Arizona to know rattlesnakes are common there.

There was a reason provided. It said because the water got deep. "Danger keep out" is much more appropriate, but hard to sell a resort with a beach with those signs.

Just like its common sense to expect a bear in the woods and a lion in the Savannah.

You dont have to be a fuking zoologist to know what an alligator is.

Yes I think whether he was wading or swimming is semantics, and the father was breaking the rules by letting his son do that, but if he thought the danger was deep water and they were just wading he couldn't possibly have foreseen that him breaking that rule would be so disastrous.
If the sign was for gators then it will prevent people from thinking they are safe if they break the rules but stay shallow, and it also let's people on the beach know that they aren't safe either, whereas with the signs right now it seems like you are all good if you're not in the water.

How are there people alive on planet Earth who don't understand that alligators are everywhere in Florida? Disney is not at fault in any way. Maybe the parents should have been watching the child more closely but I wasn't there. It was a horrible tragedy and that is all.

However, "no swimming" is the only sign that is necessary. You don't need to put an explanation under every sign to be in compliance.

Put me in any fuking environment in the world and I could name the top predators and where they would be, 100%. Its called knowing what else lives next to you. *In general*, alligators go after what they can easily reach by lunging out of the water. An alligator walking up the beach and attacking someone on land would be unlikely, although I suspect they'll probably come up with something more like a "No Guests Beyond This Point" sign going forward.

I agree completely that more strident language might have stopped the father from ignoring the rules. I just don't see where it's the resort's fault that he decided to ignore the rules.

Whether or not the signage was visible and if the father even knew is an entirely separate issue. I did notice that one witness mentioned that there seemed to be no lighting where they were standing. Aside from the questionable wisdom of letting your toddler play in an unlighted lagoon after dusk, there might be some argument that he wasn't given adequate notice that the waters were off-limits to guests.

I don't think it matters, because Disney will pay them a hefty settlement to make it go away regardless of who is right and who is wrong.

In addition, I just don't see notice as the salient point. A rapist could have jumped out of the water instead of an alligator and fuarked them all. Finding the resort negligent requires both that it was foreseeable and preventable. The existence of alligators in Florida waters is not, in and of itself, preventable, and millions of people coexist with them without getting eaten. What seals the deal here is that they had recent prior reports of alligator attacks and hadn't removed any alligators since. They can't claim they didn't know there was a real and specific threat or that they thought they'd gotten rid of the aggressive problem animal.
Nah, fukk that. I’m not doing that.

Yes, dumbass I would be prepared. Ive seen plenty of bears and I expected to see them every time. My argument isnt whether or not I would have a gun on me for a walk in the woods, its that I wouldnt do stupid things like leave food out at night or approach an area with my guard down where bears are known to congregate(IE Florida lakes for alligators case).

People who are saying it isnt common sense to know about alligators if you arent from florida or tropical environments are simply dumb people. What kind of an adult doesnt know alligators live in florida lakes??? Seriously??

Why are police doing a "search and rescue"? They think there's a chance that kid is alive? That kid died faster than Steve Irwin in a tank full of sting rays, no chance a 2 year old could fight off one of nature's hardest predators. It's almost like they wanna feed the parents' denial

Body of 2-year old found. So sad.

There was no alligator warning, just a no swimming warning. Also, no swimming doesn't mean "no wading". It's a waterfront where people are encouraged to walk on.

There is no need for any more warnings. It only takes a common sense which those parents clearly didn't.

Just because it says no swimming does not mean there is another way around it. You don't see people trying to bypass those warnings. You see them walking away or keeping their distance.

People who take things literally for what it is or say are dumb people who did us all a favor by ceasing to exist due to their thought processes.

Darwin awards exist for a reason.
