I'm a STEM guy. Software developer. Had lunch with friends. Collaborated with a number of different people on a couple of different projects. It's more social than you think.
To be clear, I'm not anti trade. Both my brothers went the union carpenter route. Decent life. I've worked as a waiter, pizza man, garbage man, maintenance worker, video store manager, hardware store clerk before finishing school and getting into development. Wouldn't go back to the blue collar life. My brother has been in the union for over 15 years and would trade places with me in a second. It's great when you're young. Over 40, not so much.

Basically ITT
4 years to get your engineering degree to make $50-70k
4 years to get your Journeyman ticket & 5 for masters but you start learning right out of High School
STEM debt 100k+
Tradesman debt $4k grant from the government that's tax free but you make that every month as a Journeyman so you don't even really need it but take it because it's free money while all your school is paid for by your employer / EI while your in school.
Also, this is coming from someone that's going for his Degree in Finance + Journeyman Electrician
Plan to start up my own Solar Panel company
In house financing, In house Production, and Marketing
Come at me brah!

That's funny op beacuse
So my boss asked me to pick up a group of tradies at downtown, because they missed the bus, you know typical tradie habit. So there I go on my brand new Audi Q7 as I approach the group I said to my self oh lawd this well end will not, I scroll down the window and greet them, they were lining up to enter the vehicle as if it was some type of bus I guess they never used another type of transport before. Finally we hit the road and in seconds you could clearly see how the toxic glow they carry took over my car, they were farting and burping like no tomorrow. So I open all windows in the car to ventilate their toxic glow, one of the guys at the very back said "Thanks I can do my business now", I said yeah sure go for it brother!, I tried to assimilate to their dialect I really didn't know what he meant by it . We finally reach our destination they all got off and said thanks I nod and waved. I called my boss to let him know the job was done and told him he owns me big time. I closed all the windows in my car and noticed a rancid smell coming from the back, I thought they must've left their lunches here, so I quickly go check it out and what do I see; excrement and urine all over my carpet and seats. I guess this is what they my meant by "my business''. So I do what any other STEM fella would do and set the phucking thing on fire the hell with all the toxic glow. My once sophisticated and elegant car was ruined. It would've never been the same anyways, as I am walking away I gave it a last look. OH BROTHER it was glorious somehow the MMI system of the Audi decoded a message on the smoke it read.
" THANK YOU ".

Quick question, what exactly do you tards think a career in science is?
You clowns think that scientists make obscene amounts of money doing little to no real work?
Okay first off, as a scientist, most of what you do is basically having to deal with tests on culture grown in media and incubators, or on actual models (usually rats or live cells) that's if you're dealing with something involved with organic bio-chemistry. So this means that you actually NEED to have an understanding of what you're doing which means a bachelor's in science at least.
Secondly, most of this requires grunt work too.... Mostly making sure cell incubation is in order, having to pipette, and performing easy but time consuming tasks like PCR or pipetting.... And guess who's going to be doing that? Interns or lab techs, which means that unless you're actually interning before you graduate you're not going to get a job because you lack experience.

Can't believed nobody pointed this.
STEM brahs after work: Clean, professional, go the bar, enjoy a nice drink, pick up a sloot, bang her, repeat next day. Mad Men chit. Will have HBB daughters / slayer sons.
Tradies after work: Smell likeSHITafter work, nobody wants to be around them, go home to fat kunt grizzly bear of a wife and get biched at for being poor. No better than a 3rd world male. Since hbb children aren't in your cards, your best hope is having a son that can either play baseball or is at least smart enough to take over the business (but he'll probably be retarded)

In all fairness to tradies, I think they get a bad rap BECAUSE they do the dirty work for too long....
sure 18-32 - get dirty, learn the craft, become an expert
but age 32+ you should be a project manager, biz owner, director, etc., you should be making the decisions
When you are 52 and still shoveling dirt, thats just sad man, the dirty work is for younger people, you should be the decision maker because of all of your years of experience and judgement.

Managing projects can require a deeper understanding of the contractual and financial side of things, which is a different world altogether.

Not trade vs. STEM.... it's Misc Fantasy Land where "students in UNI" talking about how much they are gonna make. How many times on the Misc have we heard "When I graduate I'm going to start out making XXX,XXX per year" but on all these threads with people e-bragging, no spoon pics of their riches, no pics of their pay stubs, just a bunch of BS. The last one, the only guy that posted his paycheck was humble about it and had no need to brag. Miscers talking about getting a STEM degree and they can't even put a sentence together. How are they going to make it in real life? Nothing more confident about their future than a college kid. Just LOL thinking they are going to get some cushy job right out of school and get paid to play on their computer, and even more, making more than the average in their industry. Think because you are doing well in school you will dominate in the field? When you get to the field you'll be getting schooled again by veterans in your field that are going to make you feel stupid every day. Most of you, what you are predicting you'll make year 1, you might make year 10.
