You give terrible advice. Don't know why people keep asking you because that is cringeworthy as phuck. By your suggestions it leaves me doubting if you ever socialize in real life at all.

Forget the email. Call him and talk to him. Ask him what he is doing with his life and tell him the suit is at your place if he feels inclined to take it back. Sucks to be in your position OP. Post pics for reps.

Today I get an email from him...its a bill for the suit: about 500$.

I never wear suits and this thing will literally sit in my closet. His groomsmen gift? He covered the socks. Srs.

Like is this pretty fuked up or at all typical? I am kind of pissed, this guy has been cheap the whole time I've known him but this seems really low to me.
You cannot charge someone for something they didnt know they were buying.

I would just post the email with the caption, "Would have gotten my own suit" At the same time, I never been in a wedding where I was bankrolled and I never heard of a "grooms gift" so idk. I've always worn all my own suits.

What was his wording regarding the suit before the wedding? Did he mention or even allude that you'd be paying for the suit? He sounds like the type who would sue you over this $500, so I would email him and put it in writing IF he never said you would be paying him for the suit previously.

There are always two sides to this story. I refuse to believe the dude purchased suits for all these guys then sent them bills and none of them knew nothing.

Not to mention OP mentioned nothing about the other grooms mans complaining about this chit. Have a feeling OP went along for a ride hoping it was free.

This is kinda what I'm thinking. Just find it hard to believe the groom would spring a bill on them without even alluding to them paying. Something like "I'll cover the suits now, we'll square it up later."

I don't find it hard to believe. At one point I hadn't seen my friends in a long time and so they called me up inviting me to a BBQ. I say "what should I bring" they say "nothing, _____ has got it covered". At the end of the BBQ we're just sitting chilling and then one of the guys says "OK _____ how much do we owe you?" All the guys apparently knew we were splitting the bill but no one mentioned it to me. I was pissed AF but I payed anyway since I wasn't gonna start an argument over a few $$.
In my culture we generally don't invite people to events we're hosting and then ask them to pay for it afterwards.

The lobster socks and pocket squares were my gift to you (in addition to lifelong friendship and the promise to stand with each of you when your time comes), so don't worry about those.

That shakes out to $528"

I'd rather keep the $538 than the suit and your "lifelong friendship". Please e-mail me the address to send the suit and shirt back to you.

PS. I'm keeping the lobster socks and framing them alongside this picture.

Just tell him you weren't prepared to pay for the suit to stand in HIS WEDDING and that you will bring it back to him so he can return it. If he says something like there is a no refund policy then that's his problem.

If he persist then send him a bill for your time (however many hours you spent at the wedding x how much you make)

This dude wouldn't even be a client of mine much less a friend. You can do whatever you want to do however.

Wtf? iT COMPLETELY changes the situation if an email was sent and you were aware prior. Then the responsibility is on you to either tell him to F off right then and there. If you didn't speak up, it means you were cool with it.

Lmao, to each his own and if people enjoy weddings then by all means continue with them.

But lol at how selfish people become when it's their "big day." Expect people to travel to opposite ends of the globe (sometimes), pay for accommodations, travel, take time off and still expect a gift (at least $50-100). Half of them only have "appetizers" to eat as well and one shiet, tiny, piece of cake. And this is for the generic guest, not even mentioning the people who have to drop $500+ for clothes they are forced to wear because they have the "honor" of standing in the wedding.

Half of them get divorced within 10 years anyway. No thanks, Geoff.

Pretty ****ed up. He should have been upfront about the projected expenses rather than just hit you with a bill out of nowhere (esp. with more expensive suits than necessary). I would probably reach out to the other groomsmen that you are close with and see what they think. It seems like this guy is a complete cheapskate and is so cheap he is willing to **** over his own groomsmen (huge red flag). His financial situation may be pretty bad though as he may have years of Law School debt and only a government lawyer job (note that he probably makes only 80K).

I'd dig deeper for a reasonable explanation, and if there are none, just ditch him.

you do realize that you can give him back the suit and refuse to pay him, right? or you can just throw the suit on his property and leave. anything that would mean not stealing...

idk bachelor parties are supposed to cost you at least $500 (you spent $75) and tuxes are supposed to be rented and cost you around 100-150.

The way I see it is that you are spending the normal amount of groomsman money and getting a suit.

Cutting ties with him will only get him out of paying for things at your wedding since you said u haven't seen him in a while + since he's married now i doubt he cares.

Wha? If you want a special day, coordinated to your taste, you should pay for it. Especially given divorce rates these days.

I can marry a Woman with two witnesses and a few hundo $. No need to drag 100s of people into it and force them to spend money.

I just confirmed by going through my email, there wasn't anything I missed. The only thing said was 'I am picking out the suits we are going to wear for the wedding, they are awesome. *blah blah, go get measured, maybe we'll get pocket square etc* I am looking into the discounts we can get if we sign up for things like store credit cards. Bottom line it's a great suit you'll look good.'

There has to be a way to return it somehow. Call up the store and straight up tell them you don't want the goddamn suit. Anything beats the **** your "friend" is pulling right now.

PS - I dated a chick who does hair. The second there is a wedding involved, she instantly can double her price and still gets non-stop business. The same goes for photographers, caterers, clothes rentals/buying, accommodations, etc.

My friend went to book a room for a hotel. They told him something like 120 dollars for the room and then he stupidly mentioned it was for the wedding and they charged him 250 dollars. (srs) He cancelled, had his gf call back and didn't mention anything about the wedding...back to 120 dollars.
