I would prefer having a handgun or AR instead of a shotgun, or in addition to it.

I'm all for legally owning any gun you want, but I don't believe the AR-15 is the perfect home defense weapon. I have several AR's including SBR's and suppressors, but I still keep a winchester defender 12ga with 00 buck next to the bed. In my home I want one shot to stop any threat instantly when I have nowhere to go. Small risk of jamming on any semi auto weapon, multiple rounds possibly being required to stop threat, extreme risk of over penetration in residential areas, etc... I know my quality pump action shotgun is going to work flawlessly and a single round of 00 buck center mass is going to stop any threat instantly.

Now if I ever get enough extra cash to spring for a full auto lower, maybe I'll change my mind.

You've posted a lot of useless jargon about bells and whistles that really hold no relevance. Concerning only - and only - what's important, I have two questions for you:

1. From your perspective, how does the maneuverability of an assault rifle compare to that of a handgun?
2. Compared to a shotgun for which a 'point-and-spray' approach can be used, really, how is an assault rifle even practical?

I'll break this one down a bit.

First, it has a 10.5" barrel so it is a SBR (Short Barreled Rifle) according to the ATF which required me to submit a lengthy application process, background check (in addition to the one I went through when I bought it as a pistol), a 3 month wait, and a $200 tax stamp just to be able to add a stock to it.

The short barrel is practical for HD as it gives me a smaller overall length to wield inside a home.

It also has a suppressor. Which took another background check, another 6 month wait, and another $200 tax stamp. All so that if I have to fire the rifle in defense in the home it won't blow my hearing out and/or that of my family.

A 500 Lumen weapon mounted light with strobe function allows me to illuminate, positively identify, and disorient a threat without having to move my hands from a firing position.

People often use handguns for home defense, but a handgun is used to fight your way to a long gun. Handguns are by nature not accurate weapons with their short barrels and short sight radius. Especially under stress, when your adrenaline dump hits and you lose fine motor control. Long barrel and holographic sight ensure round go where they intend.

Bringing a long gun to a gun fight is like bringing a chainsaw to a knife fight.

The AR platform is also light and has zero if any felt recoil so it is easily managed by not just me but also my wife, and allows for rapid well aimed follow on shots.

Rifles produce hydrostatic shock, handguns for th\ers can kiss my ass.

what flashlight are u using on it?

That's an Inforce WML pretty much the standard in AR lights.

Helmet mounted lights though... Lot's more options, depends on what exactly you want

Don't miss. Don't short shuck it.

Defense is about training, and the AR15 has the greatest propensity for training and home defense. If 1 man breaks in my home, yeah, a W1200 is a sweet gun. If there's 4 of them (normal in cities with large gang populations), not so much.

An AR-15 isn't an assault rifle. An AR-15 is less maneuverable than a handgun, but also more accurate, has a higher FPS, higher amount of energy going into target, easier to manage a light/laser combo, holds more rounds...
2. Compared to a shotgun for which a 'point-and-spray' approach can be used, really, how is an assault rifle even practical?
Just lol.

If you're not shooting at 20m-30m, the spread is very minimal. Shotguns have to be aimed just like anything else.

I'm not anti-gun so pls no negs.

I would think that in a home invasion situation where you decide to use a gun it would be over so quickly that this idea of a running gunfight through the house to your rifle/shotgun/alternative just seems a bit far fetched (outside of movies).

And if you have a strong preference for a longer gun in this situation, wouldn't it make sense to have it more readily available (so you don't have to 'fight your way to it')?

You took the comment out of context. the rifle pictured is by my bedside. There is another similar one in the front of the house, with handguns in the rooms I am generally in.

Also you had to go through paperwork to get it, is that really that big of a deal? Everyone seems to go nuts when you suggest maybe a lethal weapon should need a license or registration? If you still get it (because you're not a career criminal, nut job with glue habbit etc) then is it a problem?
It is leaning up against the wall next to the headboard on the bed. But now that my daughter has just started crawling, it is going on a tension mount on the wall.

You have to go through paperwork and a background check for any gun bought from a dealer. Although in my state you can buy a gun from a private citizen without one.

I respect your right to use what you want but me personally have always used a short barrel 20ga with #4 or so shot. Big enough to kill but not enough that I have to worry about shooting through a wall and killing my family. Or my Glock 22 using some good HP rounds. At least it will have a low chance of killing someone after penetrating some housing material. The problem and why I don't use rifle rounds for home defense is purely because I don't want to shoot through a wall and kill a family member. When your home is being invaded you won't have track of all family members right away. One might be out of bed and hiding somewhere. Not ideal if you end up putting 10 rounds into a wall.

Edit: however if you live somewhere where you do not need to worry about over penetration then I would definitely go with an AR or some other small rifle.
