Who says that's why people get tattoos? Do you have any studies or anything other than your opinion to back up this?

People get tattoos to remember parts of their lives

To remember loved ones

to cover up scars from surgery or what they consider to be unsightly birth marks, that kind of stuff.

And then you have the people who do it for "style" or gang tattoos. Far and above I'd say that people do it for themselves, not for others.

Like some other poster said, they think other people will think it looks good.

You can't read any tattoo correctly on a mirror, cause it mirrors the letters. What's the point there?

I always was never really into tattoos, though scarification intrigued me.

Still wouldn't get a tattoo.. Like I said people judge you even MORE as a black guy. I am around a lot of Mexicans and a few whites and TBH I do think of people with certain tats differently...just how I was raised. I've changed that attitude a bit of course.

Tattoos also look worse on black people, and you can't have full color like you do on lighter skin. Or you can, but it just won't look good.

Damn this whole time I thought I got my tattoo because I thought it was cool and it reminded me of a good time period in my life. This whole time I got it to show off to people and project some kind of tough guy image... Even though you cant see it unless Im shirtless.

I think he may have been referring to me as other poster, so i'll try to counter. So they might think it looks good on them...sure, i'll grant that. But for what purpose? for themselves to look at? If so, then more power to them, although this still wouldn't be a justification for me, since there's been many things in my past I thought looked cool, but then changed my mind about a couple years later. But that's just a reason I wouldn't get a tattoo with that justification.

And if they think it will look good on them so as to make themselves appear cooler/more impressive to other people...then that's a pretty stupid reason to tattoo your body, IMO.

As far as letters/writing/wording goes..I just think that's the dumbest thing to tattoo, unless it's like a favorite word/phrase of a loved one...but not bible quotes/inspirational quotes etc. for those, if it really holds meaning to you, you can just carry it around in your wallet/pocket. that's what I used to do with all my favorite quotes.

Btw, just a disclaimer, but i'm not against tattoos in the least. I have none, and have always wanted one. Only reason i don't have one is there's nothing important enough to me to ink onto my body yet.

the bottom line is - if you are doing just about anything primarily to influence what other people think of you, then you're effed to begin with.

Do people get tattoos for that reason? Absolutely. Do most people get tattoos for this reason? Not in my experience.

Everyone ITT does something to influence what other people think of them, it's ridiculous to even try to deny it. So if someone were to get a tattoo partly or subconsciously for that reason, it would be doing the same thing as other people do, nothing worse or needing more validation.

Ever see someone in pictures with a hair style from the 60s or 70? What do you think when you see that? Clothing choices? Back in the day they looked cool. Today, they probably are wondering what they were thinking. At least those things they were able to change.
