Seems like all of this should have been discussed well before the wedding. Not sure if srs but if it is, get the receipt and return the suit to where you got it. If your story is even remotely true, you can return the damn suit. It's only been two weeks and any store will take it back. Also, don't talk to the 'friend' again after this BS.

I don't know what it is, but i'm addicted to the updates on this thread.

He was in town last weekend and didn't hit me up, so this one is basically over.Suits me anyway, what a dik move on his part.

Just got off the phone with him, we argued about it for a while. I told him something about how it wasn't clear and as a contract no way could this be enforced, he then told me 'don't worry there won't be litigation at this point'. He said it was my fault for not knowing, because it was typical you pay for things at the wedding, and that it wasn't worthless what I gave him because I could re-sell it.

He then went on to say that my letter was hostile and why did I jump into hostilities as if he was doing something nefarious. His entire point was that because the other guy knew I should have known and that weddings are part of things you just spend money on. Basicly an fault was my own and I should be grateful because my 400$ gift was the equilivant to his spending 400$ on the socks/squares for everyone.

Just send him the suit back/tell him you'll drop it by next time you're in the area or whatever and be done with it.
In the end, you haven't paid, he can't make you pay, and you're the right so there's no point rehashing it over and over.

My bud got married in Sydney (brb 25h flight for > $1k). We had to buy shoes (and they were just Vans for $90 cause Australia) and the suits. I never wore the suit or shoes since. Also had to pitch on hotel/appt. and I got a rental car for a week as well.

He's since divorced the girl, but you know what I just paid it all and never looked back. I didn't want to pay it, but he's one of my closest friends (1 of maybe 3). I just take that hit in light of our friendship and not be a pain about it.

I think in general the groomsmen paying is kinda expected, but also kinda bush league if you demand specific suits and shoes. For my Sister's wedding we just got requirements and could bring/buy our own. MUCH better.

6 MONTH UPDATE
I went back and forth whether I should update this, but at this point it doesn't change anything. Anyway about a week after my last post^ we had worked out that we would split the bill, because 'it was clear' the guy said, but I was thinking I just wanted the chit to be over and we had been friends for like 15 years. I offered his dad a job short time job for a project, but it was strangely silent.

There was a 3rd friend that got involved, essentially telling the lawyer guy that I was asking around beforehand about the situation, so A DAY BEFORE I pay him the split bill he and the other guy go looking online and find this topic (dead srs) (likely from the copied email, but don't know for sure) and anyway sends me this super long text about 'never contact me or my family again' and that I had 'picked and chose the facts' and then humorously tried to make it out of honor that 'if you have any honor you know you owe me the 500$' then a few hours later the other guy who stood up texted me the essentially the same thing.

The 3rd guy told me they had called him at work 'you won't believe what we found' as if it was a big deal.

Looking back on it really funny they had their coordinated texts.

Anyway so I was really tempted to text back a 'f*** you' sort of thing, but didn't say anything, and have never heard ANYTHING since. We had been drifting apart for years, and I think he likely got back in touch with me that brief phone call simply to a: see if I would pay him anything and b: try to be 'friends' again simply so he could be the one to end it rather than my first email.

Ended in a pretty weird way, but overall glad I don't have them dragging me down with the endless drama. What a way to end a 15 year friendship.

Holy chit, why are you Americans such complicated and spoiled people? Bill for bachelor party? Bill for suits? Over e-mail? Bunch of slack jawed *******s. Here you just invite your best buddies to a bar or something, buy them a drink and call it a bachelor party, nothing too expensive or complicated. For suits you just invite them to a wedding and they arrive in what they have, it's on them. It's up to them if they want to rent or buy or they already have suits. Why complicate everything

at my wedding, i paid for my tux rental, and the best man's. everyone else got some crap like cheap sunglasses and flasks. the suit rental with shoes was probably about $80 at the time. no way would i ask someone to buy a 500 dollar suit for my wedding, just a cock move. you should adjust your wedding planning to your friends budget, it shouldn't have to break their bank. if he wanted some fancy suits, he should've footed teh bill outside the regular poverty tux rate.

Why would anyone ever want to end a 15 year friendship like that, your friend is a dick. Oh well your friend is not your friend anymore, your ex-friend is a dick.

Money and friends. You have one or the other.
It is not so much the major events as the small day-to-day decisions that map the course of our living. . . Our lives are, in reality, the sum total of our seemingly unimportant decisions and of our capacity to live by those decisions. ― Gordon B. Hinckley

What the hell does "stand up" mean?
I mean, I know what it means but never heard of it in wedding context.

That dude isn't your friend, and/or has ZERO social intelligence. It's not about money here, just the fact that he's so out of touch that he thinks it's cool for him to pick all the details for his wedding party (including the budget), and then just send off a bill when all is said and done.

Not to mention that his groomsman gifts were SO weak. Not that it matters, but in the context, it's definitely wrong.
