Roommate clears throat once every 64 seconds

Just timed him for 5 throat clears, and it took 5 minutes and 20 seconds.

My roommate is literally always loudly clearing his throat. He does not stop, ever. "Uuuguguggmmmm" .... "uuuuhgggmgmmm"

It is driving me ****ing insane. People come over and wonder what the hell is going on.

We have confronted him about it. We basically told him that he does not need to clear his throat, there is nothing in your ****ing throat, you have a tic.

He does not acknowledge it as a problem. I told him that it is not normal to constantly clear your throat, it is not a normal body function. I told him that Imightclear my throat once a week, and he laughed and said that isn't possible, my throat would be blocked up (????). He views throat clearing as a simple body function such as breathing or eating.

I'm literally about to ****ing strangle him. I have to wear earplugs when I'm in my room now because I get so ****ing annoyed with this ****.

What do?

he is subconsciously trying to control the environment. But in a very passive aggressive way.

How weird would it be for someone to get upset about someone clearing their throat? That is why he is doing it.

He is controlling the environment in a manner that makes it socially acceptable without coming out and directly claiming 'dominance'.

honestly, if I were you I would call him out on it. Sure he would play it off. But in reality, no one ****ing needs to do that. It is not a physical need, he is simply satisfying his ego.

I would destroy that if I were you.

Well, I'm not sure he does it when he's sleeping, but yes, nonstop, throat clears consistently. He's never gone a long time without doing it.

If I had someone pointing a gun in my head, and he said "if your roommate doesn't clear his throat in the next 10 minutes, I will kill you and your entire family" I would have absolutely no fear whatsoever.

Not sure I understand what you mean. He doesn't even realize he's doing it. He does it when he's alone in his room. He does it when he thinks he's home alone.

The best comparison for what he's doing is tourettes.

Its very possible he has a tic. My husband cycles through tics, and his is currently clearing his throat nonstop. Previous to this, he had a neck tic where he'd kind of throw his head back or to the side and it'd crack. Totally involuntary and out of his control. There are meds that make it better but too many side effects so he just tries to deal with it...not a big deal to me since I know its part of his tic disorder. But definitely try to encourage your roomie to see a health practitioner about it!

I know this feel well, a new guy that sat DIRECTLY to the cubicle next to me in my office did made this loud, obnoxious, snorting, sniffling, throat clear every minute or so...even worse sounding than what you described. After 2 weeks I couldn't take it, I moved to an empty cubicle in the back office.

Sounds annoying, but you also sound like one of those people that would let any repetitive behavior irritate you. I meanthroat clearing? How bad could that even be? Not to discredit you though maybe it is far more annoying than I am envisioning.

Anyway how about some earplugs, playing ******t music, using a sound machine to sleep, give him some cough drops, and obviously finding a new roomate or living alone if possible. Also you could wage a passive aggressive roomate war by developing an annoying tic of your own but that sounds like not worth the effort/10

Want to hear a funny story? Every single time I see your username on the forum I always say to myself "u mad I progress". I remember a thread a long long time ago where that was your title. Not sure why that stuck out in my mind. So I just googled it.

Just LOL
