Everyone has made some really good points but OP I think what you really want is more knowledge on how to become successful, fulfilled and independent.
History will teach you everything you need to know. Fools will abstain from reading what I'm directing you. However if you read these books you'll have a greater understanding of the human condition, and the world.
These books will open your eyes and you will begin to see the moves in life you need to make money and pursue a desired person or loved one like a game of chess.
I've read a lot of books in my short life but these are the ones that stand out the most.
1. Memoirs of Casanova: you'll realize that people haven't changed much at all since the 1700's and this is by far the greatest book I've ever read.
2. Ecclesiastes from the Bible. A very human book of the bible and one that everyone needs to read to understand the human condition and mind has remained relatively the same for thousands of years.
3. The peloppanesian war. A greater understanding of how Athens was very much like America today. How pride and ignorance will get your ass kicked especially against the Spartans.
4. Xenophon Anabasis: 10,000 Greek soldiers kick Persian ass. Get stranded in the Middle East. Then journey all the way back home bearing the odds like never before seen in human history. Absolutely badass. Imagine walking 3500 miles on foot and also having to fight every village and barbarian that wants to kill, rape and enslave you on the way.
5. The Prince: a greater understanding of the human mind. People don't really change.
6. Genghis Khan: a badass and intelligent man who severely punished and nearly destroyed Islam and Middle East for acting like they do today.
7. 48 laws of Power: read it several times and you'll get a better understanding of history and the human condition.
8. 33 Strategies of War: a continuation of 48 laws of power.
9. Mastery: just like 48 laws of power only it deals more with how and why people became successful.
10. 50th Law: deals with overcoming fear.
That's 10. I've got more but these are what I personally like the most.
Basically if you read about history, and it's great leaders you'll realize the above books prove to be true every single time.
It takes dedication but history is your greatest asset. Once you've gathered enough information you'll get a good idea of what to pursue in life and easily win against those who foolishly ignore history.
You'll find or build your purpose.

It's crazy, but it just really opened my eyes that you can literally just kind of go and do anything if you have the means. I always lived my life under a lot of restrictions put in my own mind as opposed to just going with the flow more

I've been thinking about this too man, I think a lot of people just resign away their potential to mediocrity because they're scared of leaving their comfort zone, they don't think they can so it and/or because they've been conditioned by society to think a certain way. Like you said people's minds are their number one enemy.
I've come to the conclusion that to do something great with your life you must first break through the chaotic torrent of thoughts that imprison your mind and therefore impression you. I believe that many people have a great misconception for what life and our experience of life is.
From psychedelic trips that I've had I had the realization that everything in this universe is one and the same, we are all the same consciousness that is experiencing itself from different perspectives, I do not claim this idea for myself, I am aware many people have said this before me but in my gut it feels correct and has been reinforced through my own psychedelic journeys. Therefore we can assume that the only answer is to love the universe, love yourself and love those that hate you even, don't prescribe yourself to any ideology, communism, facism, left wing, right wing, Islamic, Catholicism etc. Firstly these ideologies take the secret knowledge of the workings and nature of the universe and distort and corrupt it through implementing it into their own doctrines, its all a form of mind control. The only thing that matters and the only thing you should prescribe yourself to is the experience of the present moment, the now by doing this you become the most powerful and awakened being you can become.

Further, the theory that everything is one in the same is an idea purported by eastern philosophy and tried to gain more ground by attaching itself to a misinterpretation of quantum mechanics.
There have been theories of a "quantum mind" and "quantum consciousness" that have subsequently formed off of this bad misinterpretation
http://philsci-archive.pitt.edu/3049/
Quantum states decohere too quickly at the brains temperature. Thus, our brain cant experience quantum states and our view of the world is based off of a classical approach to physics.

All because I answered truthful to every question I was asked.always be honest to everyone. if you arent, you will cause suffering to yourself and others. i never understood just how important this is until the last few years. we all wear these masks and we end up not fooling anyone because everyones goal is to see under everyone elses mask. its such a breath of fresh air when you meet someone not pretending. the only way i think someone can do this is by accepting themselves, which in turn allows them to accept everyone they meet. when you meet an honest person, youre attracted to their compassion.
Look at the current state of the world, even if you admit that you're a Trump supporter you're in danger. If not for delusional liberals attacking you then for them catching you on social media and exposing you for the world to see. If you have views that aren't the popular politically correct ones, you might as well be homophobic, racist, sexist and a bigot. Then if people find out it will effect your social life and potentially ruin your professional life as well, companies won't hire you because you're not "tolerant".
If anything, I've learned in life you have to lie and act. The ones who are the most venomous snakes will slither to the top and the ones who are truthful will be labelled crazy. Just look at media, which lives are the ones that western society is obsessed with? It's the people in T.V. and movies. What is their profession? Actors.
I think life sucks extremely and I am clueless as to what I am supposed to do. I have completely no direction and can't shake the darkness. I see the bad in everything and the depression, hate and anger always overlap anything I try to pursue. I can't get it out of my head and am a slave to my own mind. I have clueless for so long and I'm running out of time. Inb4 grow some balls. Inb4 phuk off pessimistic *******. Inb4 "do what you love". If only it was that easy to find.

Nothing but pain and suffering? What the fuk does that even mean unless it's some religious mumbo jumbo. What about before medicine? I'm sure there were a lot more people in pain and suffering.

Also life is about adapting to certain situations and making the most of it.
It's also about looking for the silver linings in every situation.
People attribute things to fate but I think you just have to work with what you're given because of the choices you made to arrive at that point.
Some people (most) choose comfort. Some dare to experiment. Either way you have to look at things positively.
The other option is suicide.

Totally agree with you bro. People always preach about "living" life and all those motivational quotes etc. We're so frequently reminded "life is what we make it" but i feel its been so overplayed that most people don't truly understand the depth and meaning of it. Our minds are always constant thinking ahead of the present moment, for example when you are on the computer browsing the web your mind just goes into that train of thoughts. Even in our daily live we are always a few steps ahead and planning/thinking/visualizing what were going to do next, but when you are 100% present in the moment, knowing you have 100% control of what's going to happen in the next millisecond, that's when life becomes interesting. So i feel what makes life truly exciting is the spontaneity of it and the fact that we are in control of that.

Some good advice I got was to always give yourself pep talks. My speech teacher in college told me this. I got a 78 on my first speech, the worst in the class. Was nervous, didn't move, kind of stumbled a lot, was not confident. Had all these kids in my class on the speech team too that made me feel inferior...especially since I went last. Well he made me speak in front of the class everyday. He did it for everyone, but especially me. The second speech I got a 98, the highest in the class.
What did he tell me? Everyone has an inner dialogue before and during whatever they do. When something is challenging or nerve-racking, give yourself a positive pep talk. Keep telling yourself you got this, you'll be fine, you're capable of doing this. Don't let the negative talk win. You are what your mind thinks. And if you want to truly be confident, you have to be prepared.
That literally changed my life. In every way. Public speaking, in a social setting, for soccer when I was running or about to pass out. I never stopped any running, sprinting, conditioning work for soccer in my 4 years at college. Not once. And it was because of that teacher.
Idk you may not find that helpful but your comment just reminded me of that. This teacher made me the most optimistic person. Even in the absolutes pits of my life I was excited about the future and still was excited to figure things out.

It's also about looking for the silver linings in every situation.
People attribute things to fate but I think you just have to work with what you're given because of the choices you made to arrive at that point.
Some people (most) choose comfort. Some dare to experiment. Either way you have to look at things positively.
The other option is suicide.

Very good thought and well put

^^ak1615 very true. Felt like I didn't really have a purpose or gain I can hone in on after college soccer. Sounds ridiculous, but when you work your entire life towards playing it, and it abruptly ends, I was lost.

Life is pain, you gotta suck the joy out every chance you get. Most days, people, jobs, etc. are completely boring. I believe when we die we cease to exist, which is great in some regards and depressing in others. Lately I've just been trying to get healthy and do fun things. I'm at high risk for addiction so I try to avoid drugs/alcohol, besides they fuk your life up and make you content with a chit existence.

Age is nothing.
I do what the phuck I want when I want, and I am kind and loving and caring along the way.
The problem is no one feels accepted or enough. They need a nice car to show their wealth, they need a girlfriend to show they are straight and can get women, they need to be a kunt to show they are tough. You see where this is going?

Life what you make it so lets make it right.
On a serious note, only over the last year have i realised that if you put 100% effort and focus into achieving something it will happen. If you fail you have gained a bunch of new mental resolve and skill.
I feel life is just improving yourself so you can improve other peoples situations.

We need to learn to suck it up and do it. I see so many people wasting so many oportunities because of the fear. Tbh, as gregg plitt said, "We only live once, but if we work it right, once is all we need."
Just get out and fck what everyone thinks and say, do your thing and be happy.
For me, it started when I stopped to worry about what others would think if I did that, this...
