We all like a good laugh here but let's be fair, you were engaged in a dik measuring contest as much as Testi ITT. A 600k property is something to brag about unless you're committed to misc standards.

And for all the LA haters ITT (not talking about you donblaximus): I just got home in the time between now and the last post. Takes me less than 10 mins door to door. I live 5 mins away from the beach and traffic is non existent when I actually want to go out and enjoy the nightlife. Only people driving during the "rush hours" are tourists, trucks and peasants. I personally LOVE the culture in LA, access to world class food, art scene, music scene, amazing natural scenery (mountaintops and beaches within minutes), etc. If you care more about driving on open road at any hour of the day and think the rest of the amenities above are no big deal, then definitely dont move to LA. But this cartoonish image of mexican gangbangers on every corner jumping out to stab you while you sit in traffic is... well fkin cartoonish lol.
The dude makes $130k and bought a place for $600k. The devil is all in the detail. Did he pay cash? That would be decently impressive. If he took a 30 year mortgage on a property 5x his earning which is not passive, then I say thats a bad move, even if he did put 20$ down. Relative to the area, a $600k condo is basically a 2 bedroom apartment. Straight poverty apartments in LA are $400k. So again, not that impressive. There are a ton of people that live in LA, anyone with a waiter's job can make it happen. I am not shietting on the guy for living in an apartment in LA, im bringing him back down to earth because he thinks thats some sort of unusual feat. I have much more respect for the quiet 20 something grinder that has his money working in multiple different areas and being quiet about it.

Manhattan, Santa Monica or Hermosa are completely different if you actually own a home/free standing town home within blocks from the beach.

Why would inflation mean it is not 100k profit. 100k may not be as valuable in 5 years but it is still 100k more.

He would be paying HOA fees/taxes/etc by renting as well so I think that sort of cancels out those. If he just bought the property and let it sit without living in it then maybe that argument would be valid.


I am guessing the value will go up more than 100k due to the renovations he has talked about doing. If he was not doing any renovations and it still went up 100k that seems pretty good to me.

Paying half our salary towards mortgage, insurance and taxes? Crazy. Between that and all that bacon its safe to assume you have no other passive investments working since another $22k of your salary should be going straight to tax free retirement vehicles.

On top of that you talk about renovations but then mention you havent touched the bathrooms or kitchen. What did you renovate then? Anything other than bathrooms or kitchens FIRST is a mistake. Even a novice knows that.

Who has a $600k place by 30? I know 27 year olds with $450k cars paid cash. But they dont post on misc acting like they are balling.

Most probably don't have a reason to purchase a 500k property.

Unless you are living in an area with COL as high as yours why spend 500k on a single property? I could get approved for a mortgage that much....does not mean it would be an intelligent move in my area.

In reality you make the same wage as a nurse in california.

I'm just here thinking about buying a VAn and using it as my home for 1/2 years, save money and buy a house/Invest it. that's if I have to move to San Fran for a tech job when I graduate. fuk.

Strong this. I lived in the SF area for a year, and every <35 year old person that lived on their own treated it like it was some doctorate degree level accomplishment.

They also had testi's "every other place on the planet is straight chit" attitude.

All depends on your priorities and interests in life. Some peoples interest don't lie in LA or SF. CA people often can't understand this.

Id rather just work some overtime then live in a fuking van. The only reason it would be acceptable to live in a van is if you are doing it so you can travel around cheap. If you just buy a van and live in one fuking place you are poverty

I have family who lives in LA and I like visiting them once a year while riding my motorcycle to socal but would not like to live there srs

Too hot, overpopulated, excess pollution, ridiculous traffic and horrible drivers even though I lane split to avoid traffic srs

I like the Bay Area but it is expensive as fuark too srs

For those brahs who want to compare high living costs, the city of Alamo, here in the Bay Area, has a high concentration of billionaires srs

Sadly I got a late start in college, and I'm probably going to end up graduating 25-27. I'd rather rough it out for a year or two to try to "catch up" and invest that money or use it as a down payment for a place.

But yea lol, it's gonna suck ass.

I did not start working a legit job until right after my 26 b day. My first year I made about 70kish. I rented an apartment, bought a car with cash, paid off my 2kish debt, and saved around 20k.

I mean that wont be possible if you go to san fran unless you are balling but you can still "catch up" pretty quick with a decent job if you live a frugal lifestyle. I just would not personally live in a fuking van.

But again I guess thats life if you have to move to san fran.

Median house price in the total GREATER Sydney area is $1million.
Could barely buy a garage for $350k. Pretty sure some parking spots in Sydney go for that per year.

Hate to say this, but I agree. I lived in Lafayette, which is one of the primo areas of the SF Bay Area and it was straight chit. Homes cost around 1.5 million and there was legit nothing special about the place.

People were weird as fak and insanely proud to live in a place with zero going on.

Aside from China-owned Vancouver, the Bay Area is quite possibly the least value-for-dollar spot on the planet.
