In any major city that will cost you $1M+ just for the lot....and that would be for a small lot, like 6k sqft.
Most people cant afford that. That is why they move into the burbs.

I am greatful for the fact that my kids can live in decent house, great schools, great community yet I am still only 6 miles away from the Theatre or Museums.

You aren't getting what I am saying. I originally put why would you want that if you don't have a family to that other poster. Stating that is too big of a house for just a single person or a couple anyways so Id prefer to live in just a small apartment downtown or if I was not going to live in a small apartment I would want land at least(but not downtown). I don't see the allure of a big house in the burbs, unless you have a family.

I was only speaking for people without kids. Though ultimately Id rather live outside of the city, outside of the burbs even with some land if I had a family.

For those without families, you would still need to be able to afford a large chunk of change to own something in town and most cant afford to do that nor do they want to live in an apartment.

I was saying I do not see the allure of having a bigger place when it is just you or you and your gf. Why have all that extra space to fill? Im also not speaking of LA. Where I am I could get a 1/2 bedroom condo downtown or I could get a 3/4 bedroom place in the burbs. I don't understand why someone would want extra bedrooms for just themselves

Not saying there are not people who want that just that I don't see the point in it. That house in spring,tx seems pointless to me without a large family to fill it.

Interesting pissing contest ITT. I'm moving to Cali though undecided if SF, LA, or SD. Maybe I should just post on CD to get real answers.

People seem to fail to understand basic real estate. When you buy a property in any city you are buying easier access/proximity to things such as weather, dining, entertainment, culture, shorter commute, etc. Comes with the trade off of more congestion, smog, crime, etc. It's typically a wise investment if nothing else though.

I talked with some RE agents and there's a hard push to sell property in South Central LA like Linuxjon posted. Gentrification at it's finest but I also wonder if they'll eventually push out the poor people and housing prices will explode. It's near LAX and the coast so weather is nice; it's close to DTLA and west LA where a lot of good jobs are. Seems like it's actually going to be the new "Flats" and these shacks are gonna be million dollar properties in the next decade.

From my experience, they send their kids here for school. Those kids live in the, or it's merely a place to park money outside a communist system. A lot of times nobody lives in them.

Seriously not a bad idea, although you would probably need to find an "in" with these upper end investors. The ones I know at least buy in cities they have relatives or close colleagues in. Those people keep an eye on the property. Like I mentioned, I literally park my cars I'm restoring in an uncle's garage connected to a 5500 sqft home he stays in maybe 5 nights a year.
