Hip Hop And The Stereotypes Of Black Males (Black Miscers GTFIH)
Hey guys,
Quick thoughts, and then a video that eloquently explains problems with hip hop culture/media.
If you are a black brah with average or above intelligence, who can think and speak in coherent sentences, you probably get annoyed periodically by the negative stereotyping that you've experienced.
The thing is, if you give attention to or financially support hip hop culture, you're essentially supporting a culture that is built around promoting stereotypes of black males:
Wanton aggression.
Criminality.
Egotism.
Reckless promiscuity.
Materialism.
Hedonism.
Inarticulation.
Resolving conflicts via violence or verbal abuse, rather than empathetic communication.
Etc.
I realized recently how absurd it was to complain about non-whites stereotyping me, when I supported a culture/media that perpetuates those very same stereotypes.I realized that I was contributing to the same thing that I was complaining about.
I now think it's absurd that so many black people complain about portrayals of black people in movies and TV shows, whilst simultaneous being fans of a rapper who talks about engaging in causal murder, and how much better they are than other people because they have a lot of money.
I don't think that hip hop music alone fosters violent materialistic criminality, however I do think it's a key component when combined with a neglectful or negative family environment (like absentee fathers), and a violent social environment.
The images and words we are frequently exposed to, tend to become internalized - that's pretty much a foundation of psychotherapy - so what does consuming hip hop music lyrics and videos do in regards to images and thoughts of black people?
(A related final note: I'm 32, and the people I've noticed who are still heavily into rap/grime music and in their 30s tend to have the mentality of 19 year olds. I noticed that about a year ago, I couldn't ignore it after a while, hardcore fans of the music tend to have a schoolboy mentality well into adulthood IME.)
Here's the vid I mentioned (skip 2:30)...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3MrGp0UHuQ
FWIW, I tend to listen to instrument based music these days (and have been moving towards this kind of music since the beginning of the year)...
From Shuggie Otis...

To Frank Zappa...

This has been on the minds of a lot of people brah but any criticism of Hip Hop/Rap culture leads to:
1) Labelled as racist, elitist, privileged, cultural superiority, etc etc etc especially if you are non-black.
2) Labelled as race traitor, brain washed, uncle tom, "being/acting white" etc etc etc if you are black.

Here's a short vid talking about how hip hop music grew out of a culture of verbal abuse in black communities...

Very true op. I also find that black guys I work with who are intelligent and make a lot of money who have everything in common with me and nothing in common with ghetto culture still defend it to death.

People are just too extra man, I like ratchet music sometimes but I grew up middle class.
It's just music, seems like people can't just leave it at that.
Also always found it funny how that 2 of the 3 biggest rappers are not associated with the ghetto culture at all, and they say that even if they grew up around they always were that smart kid that stayed out of dumb unnecessary trouble.
Also the majority of the trap rappers are scrubs or fakes and the ones that are actually about that life end up like Kodak black (free the finesse kid tho)

the only thing i hate about rap right now is that it went from "drugs are bad" to "sell drugs to survive" to "getting rich off of selling drugs" to now.."it's cool to be a drug addict"
nothing cool about being a junkie

It sounds good and I enjoy it so why should I stop? As I get older, I care less and less about what people think about me. Not going to stop hitting the gym because some people feel insecure around me due their own self esteem issues with their bodies, not going to stop listening to rap that supports stereotypes that may affect people's views on me.
Fact of the matter is, people will judge you regardless so the fk cares? Just enjoy what you like in life and stop worrying about what others may think.

Music is a part of culture, and music can foster culture. Sub-cultures can, and do develop around music (Grunge music in the 90s, drug culture and house music in the 90s UK, Kpop, etc).
But it's important to note, I was referring to the culture/media of hip hop, the music is a core part of it.
I am also referring to the communication patterns, values, images, etc of hip hop.

The people who genuinely live in accordance with hip hop culture, are career criminals - who are either dead, or in and out of prison - who phuck a lot of women, and (as consequence of the short sighted mindset that hip hop promotes) don't use rubbers and so have a bunch of children then aren't fathers to.
Try to take a step back from your emotional enjoyment of the music, and analyze the lyrics, think about what a community would be like if they adhered to the values and behavior promoted by the songs. It would look like black ghettos in the US.

The junkies of course are, in part, created to the "sell drugs to survive" and 'get rich from selling drugs' people.

Like I said in the OP; you likely had a stable dual parent family and/or grew up in a good social environment, so it was 'just music' to you. Kids from ghetto listen to that music, and it reinforces the values and behavior that they are genuinely being exposed to, or even pressured into.
Also always found it funny how that 2 of the 3 biggest rappers are not associated with the ghetto culture at all,

I don't let music influence how I live my daily life, and any adult that does needs to grow up. Its the equivalent of a kid that just finished watching a Batman movie who later goes out and runs around the park with a cape and mask.

For those of us who have a few brain cells, we know not to take hip hop culture too seriously.
But obviously, one can see how impressionable OPs might be hurt by the music growing up.

You have fatherless kids who grow up idolizing rappers who's message is all about fxcking b!tches, getting money, selling drugs, and killing people. Why is it a surprise when that's exactly the life they start to live when they hit teenage years? Then they inevitably get a few females pregnant before they hit 21 and they end up in prison, dead, or just go ghost on the kids and its an entire new generation of the exact same thing.
I work with a few black brah's that were raised in the projects. It was a combination of hard-core parenting, religious values and a few positive roll models which kept their life on track and allowed them to succeed in school/life and get out of the ghetto/low income neighborhoods. Without a strong emphasis with working parents teaching their kids to get an education & get a job, it really is a near hopeless situation. When you are surrounded by people who glorify those types of thing's what makes you want to work hard to do good in school, get a good job, save for retirement/invest extra money, etc.?

I'm not hating on rap at all. Perfectly fine if people like it. I just think its fairly unhealthy to saturate children with music that glorifies violence and drug dealing. No kid should aspire to be a criminal.

It's just music, I find it incredibly stupid when a miscer or some irl decides to give me the old: music used to be about something.
Different scenes - different vibes. If I want to zone out and actually listen to a thematic album there's Talib Kweli, Shad.
Actually nvm. It's just ****ing music, it's their artistry and they make millions doing what they love.
Point being don't be impressionable, it's just music!

I've been called an oreo, uncle tom, etc. The thing is most of these remarks came from from non-black people while I was in college.
It also sucks having people assume that you can dance lol.

More white people consume and purchase hip hop culture than black people. Trust me, most black people are not consuming mainstream hip hop to that degree. Hip hop cannot necessarily be equated to a delinquent culture because if you fixed the problems in those areas but kept the hip hop, there wouldn't be as many problems coming out of black communities.
If you fix the hip hop but keep the problems, congratulations. You still have problems. Hip hop began getting slowly bastardized in the late 80s-early 90s with the advent of NWA and other gangsta rap acts (even though many of those early performers still had talent and were more along the storyteller roles than anything else, with few exceptions) until it devolved into this trash we have today. Notice how nowadays all the white rappers are outperforming the black ones... It's called appropriation of culture. David Banner explains it pretty well.

Judging by crime stats those stereotypes reflect reality.
Black males are 6% of the population yet commit more than half of the murders in America. Rappers rap about that stuff because thats what black people want to hear about. Supply & demand brah

Almost every black american under the age of 35
- listens to Rap
- wears Nikes
- eats McDonalds
These are essentially foregone conclusions at this point. Black americans are the most stereotypical people on this Planet. This is why media is so concentered on them, put a black male next to white female in a commercial and they will purchase/consume the product.
As for OP, I wonder why Kaepernick didn't speak out against thugs and drug dealers. Instead he went after the authority risking their lives to take away the bad guys. We (Whites, Latinos, Asians, Arabs) aren't helping you people until you help yourself first.

Why are these questions never posed in regards to heavy metal, EDM, death metal and those genres? Do these types of music not promote violence, sex and extreme drug use? Yes, they do. Oh, but that's alright....because it's not hip hop.
Lol, gotta love that selective targeting.
