They know that Stalingrad is a city where a battle happened. I'm sure that that was the case in the 40s as well. There isn't a suggestion that Johnson should know the minutia of the war, but knowing one of the major areas where the conflict is occurring is kind of relevant.

I don't know how this could be tested but I wager the majority of Americans do not know Stalingrad as the location of a major WWII battle. Maybe if they saw it in that sniper movie or something...maybe.

If he really didn't know what Aleppo was, then that's a problem -- and it really did appear that way. All told it doesn't amount to much because he was never winning the election anyway, we can only hope he steals enough votes from Hillary that she doesn't get elected.
