thats why you are not a cop, in a fight or flight scenario cops will always go for gun, which he was in as you can see from his retreating rapidly, he has spent thousands of hours training to draw his weapon and fire and thats exactly what happened. Its justified no matter if you like it or not

and this, folks, is exactly why people are pissed. you just dont get it.

i cant be a cop because my first instinct isnt to kill whatever scares me or makes me flustered or catches me off guard?

and then lol at your straw man "he has thousands of hours of training". for some people, thousands of hours of training isnt enough to become good at your job. some jobs arent for everyone.

its too easy for some to overreact, then claim "fear for my life" instead of admitting they made a mistake.
They don't have poor judgement. They just have different values. I would do the same thing as the cop because there's a risk that I could lose a finger or something and it's just a ****ing dog. I value a 1% risk of losing my fingers more than a random dog.

My judgement is 100% reasonable for maintaining the most important thing in the universe to me: myself.

there is literally no rational reason to be pissed about this, it is as justified a dog shooting as it comes, you want to be pissed be pissed at the woman who failed to secure her dog. Again cops were 100% justified

I have a pitbull and this kind of stuff scares me, one time I got pulled over because the cop thought I threw a cigarette out my window when I don't even smoke and I had my pitbull in the car, as the officer started approaching my car I yelled as loud as I could "I have a dog! I have a dog!" the officer quickly got the point and kindly told me to step outside of that car to talk and that was that, always protect your puppers...

the other cop began backing up, and was probably why the dog perceived him as a threat and went after him

but since i can not read an animals mind it is really anyones guess, maybe the cop had bacon in his pocket.

I think I narrowed down the fundamental disconnect here.

Many of you value a dog's life more than you do a wild animal and you also know about dog psychology.

Imagine you're in the woods and a wild boar growls at you and you have a shotgun. Do you look at its tail and try to analyze if its aggressive, etc etc or do you just ****ing shoot it? Shoot it because you don't give a **** about a ****ing pig compared to a 1% chance of you losing a foot or some fingers or worse, and you have no idea about how pigs behave.

I know as much about dog behavior as I do about pig behavior: nothing. And value dogs as much as I value any other animal compared to my own life or limbs: nothing. A large dog barking seems aggressive and like it puts my life or limb at risk.

A large dog barking at me looks the exact same to me as a wild boar growling at me.

well you cant argue it was a mistake because you dont know what the dog would have done, why? because its a phuking animal, they are unpredictable many dog owners have had their dog ranomly attack them, yes their own owners and maim or disfigure them for life and some instances kill their own phukin owners, dont make me post the hundreds of cases where dogs have killed their own owners or maimed them

On animals, it might be. The average person doesn't know dog psychology and so they have to go by looks alone when making life or death decisions.

To someone who doesn't know anything about dogs, that dog was ****ing scary and looked ready to attack.

Dog owners need to remember that, to non-dog people, they're just walking around big, dangerous animals. Not cute, intelligent creatures.

How would you react to someone's pet crocodile snarling at you? You'd definitely shoot it because you know jack **** about crocodiles and snarling (barking) seems like it could be an attack warning.

So yes, you made an argument that the cop, you, anyone had no other option. "No other means" to stop "the dogs attack". Your simplified logic, self-righteousness, and predisposition to pull your trigger in such situations is what people find absolutely frightening about the USA in general and your LEO's in particular.

right, because everyone trains their dog to be resistant to pepper spray...i know I go home on my lunch breaks every day just to give him a little spritz, so he doesn't get too weak.

Have you ever paid attention to a dog vs cat thread? why do some people like cats? because they are independent and not as submisses/beta as dogs. which completely debunks your theory that dogs "attack, not back down". hell, go to your nearest friends house, start slamming **** around the house super loud, and see if the dog tries to attack you or tries to run away in fear...I don't really care what he does, but hopefully he'll remove one more ignoramus from society.

lol @ using trained attack dogs as an example to defend this shooting. You do realize that shelters will not adopt out dogs that have had that kind of training, if they can determine it? And also that lots of shelters have a selection process for who they adopt out dogs to, so as to minimize the risk of a shelter dog going to a shtty owner. Ex-police dogs also do not go out to be adopted by anyone. I expect cops to maintain a level of composure expected from someone who willingly signed up for a life-threatening job, not for them to breakdown at the sign of the slightest provocation and pull out a gun. If that's how a cop is going to conduct himself, I'd rather police my own society than have him do it.

Pretty sure cops risk more than that every day, so what's the big deal?

on a civilian basis, sure. if this cop was off duty, sure. But this is his job that he signed up for. He is held to a higher standards...if he can't meet that standard, then replace him. what's so hard to undrstand about that

I love how all you people defending the cop are using examples of trained attack dogs and police raids.

historically, dogs have been used more so as tools and aids, not weapons. don't think any rifle can herd sheep, or retrieve birds from the river.

To be clear we're talking about a dog ITT. It's a pet animal that has been domesticated for 40,000 years. This wasn't a feral dog or some kind of dog bred for attacking LEO's. There are 500 million on Earth. Ever go to Greece? There are dogs just hanging out everywhere and sometimes they will come at you. The average Greek teenager has more balls and intelligence then you based on that comment.

It's the owner's responsibility to restrain the dog.

But this really all comes down to personal responsibility. Part of personal responsibility is not associating yourself with people likely to have problems with the law. Because it puts you and people or animals that depend on you at risk.

My best friend from childhood does hard drugs. I don't associate with him anymore because his drug use puts me at risk both legally and physically. It's personal responsibility.

Dogs bark when people they don't know are are their owner. If it was growling and showing teeth that would be a different story. Have you ever even owned a dog?

And we're back to this: What if you have no experience with animals?

You have no experience with crocodiles. What would you do if someone's pet alligator walked out of the house and started snarling (barking) at you?

I bet 100% you'd shoot it. How is that any different than this situation?

No. I don't know anything about dogs. That's the entire point. You guys are just assuming that everyone knows about dogs. To 50% of the population, that dog looked ready to attack and big enough to cause serious physical harm.

A good dog owner knows that and restrains their dog. It's your job as a dog owner to look after your dog just like you'd look after a child that doesn't know what it's doing and putting itself in danger.

Here's how to put yourself in the same situation:

You have no experience with crocodiles. What would you do if someone's pet crocodile walked out of the house and started snarling (barking) at you?

I bet 100% you'd shoot it. How is that any different than this situation?

Then a legion of crocodile owners are gonna come here and demonize you because the crocodile was just trying to play. It was wagging its tail!

How is it any different than this situation? Because dogs are in nearly american household and no one has a domestically bred alligator as a pet that greets people at the front door. You people are fukking daft I tell you.

You show me someone who hasn't been greeted or jumped on by a dog when entering a house and I'll tell you that that person should not be in law enforcement.

Folks working at the post office and UPS greet people at their doors every single day in this country when delivering a package, yet somehow you never hear about the UPS guy shooting the dog whose natural instinct is the walk with us to open the door. I won't defend pussy ****ing police officers who are wasting my tax dollars.

you understand that it was ment that he had no other means without risking injury right? literally anything else he could have done increased his chances of SBI right? Obviously he could have attempted a number of other things but they all would have pretty much guaranteed his injury.

You shouldn't be allowed to become a cop without a basic understanding and experience of domesticated animals. Alligators and crocs aren't domesticated animals. Dogs are. They are no longer weapons. They are no longer used as beasts of burden. They are, by and large, pets. That is to say that majority of dog owners in America encourage their dogs to be the opposite of aggressive. Given that there are millions of dog owners across the country, and that dogs are naturally curious/inquisitive and are encouraged to be friendly, it would make sense that officers have some understanding/education/training on these animals since statistically they are virtually guaranteed to encounter a situation with a loose dog.

This^

i got like 5 crocodiles at home and i always restrain them when police come to my door. Well, only have to restrain 3 of em cause the other 2 listen to my commands. All of em are good at the roll over command tho but its usually after i feed them the free dog meat i get from the police station.

You show me someone who hasn't been greeted or jumped on by a dog when entering a house and I'll tell you that that person should not be in law enforcement.
That's not what happened..... You're changing the scenario. It was barking loudly. Good thing there's video.

Pepper spray had the highest chance of effectively disabling the dog without killing it. The odds/chances that said dog would have a tolerance to pepper spray are ridiculously low. To say that all of his other options "would have pretty much guaranteed his injury" is a gross, gross overstatement. Please leave your hyperbole out of this.

Yep. Good thing there's video showing this dog communicating in it's natural way, with zero body language that indicates aggression, instead displaying body language indicating friendliness. Good thing there's video of it literally WALKING out the door and not even necessarily straight at the 2nd cop, but rather hugging the side of the house. Good thing there's video showing the dog pausing in the doorway to display friendly body language. Good thing there's video that shows how much time the officers had to make a safe, de-escalating, non-lethal choice of action.

you're saying that like every single scenario a cop gets into is going to be the exact same, and thus warrants the exact same response. Which means those "thousand of hours training" is literally just to be able to shoot a gun. which is literally what you said. so is the sole purpose of a cop to either keep the peace or kill sht?

lol you're making yourself look really, really, painfully dumb.

the fact the first cop did not need to pull his gun on the dog proves immediately that the shooting was not justified, or else both cops would have felt equally threatened.

Shoot it because you don't give a **** about a ****ing pig compared to a 1% chance of you losing a foot or some fingers or worse, and you have no idea about how pigs behave.

I know as much about dog behavior as I do about pig behavior: nothing. And value dogs as much as I value any other animal compared to my own life or limbs: nothing.A large dog barking seems aggressive and like it puts my life or limb at risk.

A large dog barking at me looks the exact same to me as a wild boar growling at me.
so because of your own ignorance and lack of empathy, others should pay for it? not to mention that cops regularly workwith dogs, so it's not unreasonable to expect them to have some understanding of dog psychology/behavior.

lol @ equating an animal that's been domesticated for thousands of years to a wild animal much heavier and more dangerous, that will actively hunt and kill humans if given the chance.

And if I was in the woods with a shotgun, i would give that boar a chance to turn away. and if he didnt, then yes I would shoot him. Just like I would do my best to shoot a dog that was latched onto my arm/leg. But I wouldn't go to the dog park and just start shooting all the dogs that are barking at me through the fence, or the ones who run up to say hi to me when I enter...

So now every cop has to take dog classes?
