Anyone did engineering? I need your help to check this (REPS)

I will teach a class of vector calculus/differential equations to freshman engineers.

The previous teacher hasn't left any online course material (partially due to his age, he was only writing on the chalkboard) and the syllabus is incomplete (I have been told the department was unsatisfied with the level of the course, it was too easy).

Now, it seems like I have carte blanche to build a syllabus from pretty much nothing.

I am not a big fan of following or using a particular textbook.

Here is my plan, the midterm is basically on vectors stuff, and then we jump to differential equations after.

W = week

W1: Taylor's theorem and applications;
W2: Vector functions and curves;
W3: Partial differentiation and differential calculus for vector functions;
W4: Curvilinear integrals, surface area, change of variables;
W5: Introduction to more rigorous analysis, then the fundamental theorem of vector calculus;
W6: Existence, continuity, etc, theorem, and some more analysis;
W7: Gauss, Green, Stoke theorem;
W8: BREAK
W9: Application of the three theorems + MIDTERM (50%)
W10: Series, power series and first and second-order linear equation;
W11: nth-order linear constant equations;
W12: Green's function and Laplace transform methods;
W13: Laplace transform methods and applications;
W14: Systems of first-order equations;
W15: Fourier series methods;
W16: FINAL (50%)

wow all that in one semester? If I remember correctly, some of the stuff you mentioned (Green's theorem) is Calc 3 and Laplace transforms is differential equations. I took that stuff as a sophomore

Perhaps you should make a homework element worth 15% and that way you can drop the final by 5% and the midterm by 10%? 50% for both exams is incredibly steep. That could make or break someone's entire semester

There is a pre-requisite course in mathematics to my course so I believe they are already familiar with partial differentiation, the Taylor theorem's and first and second-order linear equation.

But yeah if anything I will remove things, not add.

Maybe remove the Fourier series methods by more of Laplace transform?

I forgot most of my DE. If I was gonna make a class I would talk to the professors teaching the class it was a prereq for and ask what areas to focus on and show them the syllabus.

If I add a homework, I will have to grade more and I have a class of like 40-50 students.

And what kind of homework can I give? It's not a course about numerical methods, so I can't ask something like "do this in Matlab".

The pre-requisite is something like: complex numbers, multivarible calculus, differential equations of first order, linear constant of order n and differential systems.

The first part of my course would actually serves you if you want to learn about general relativity.
But you need more than that.

I took only one class of general relativity, it's a very interesting subject.

Yet it was the easiest part of diff eq (except for the infinite series stuff, that chit took an infinite amount of time and paper - ya dig?)

No, I don't really think about this. I am there to teach and I won't date college girls (also there is not lot of girls in engineering)

Look at the prerequisites for the class and normal degree program for the engineering department at the school. Don't be teaching differential equations in a class when your students are supposed to be in calc 2 or whatever. I'm surprised they're just giving you free range to teach whatever you want without guidance.
