Specifically referring to the statement that individuals can act in ways that stop themselves from reproducing because it increases the base probability that they would, the bit you bolded.

You mentioned game theory like you understood it, so if I told you that human interactions can be viewed as collaborative non zero sum games perhaps that would help?

Ego is pride
Ego is ambition
Ego is drive

Lack of ego = depression.

Never listen to people who strive to achieve ego death.

Those people are weak and have given up.
I know I'm buried on pg 5 here, but actually agree. I got VERY deep into Taoism and Zen buddhism, and it actually started scaring me that I was mentally 'killing' myself, while still physically being alive. So glad I got out of that, dead srs.

Okay Professor Nash ... please post a proof in this instance then. You're the one that said that your view of DNA replication is mathematically sound.

Personally, I think you're just trying to sound smart by throwing out terms like mathematically sound, game theory, etc. So I'm calling you out. You said it is mathematically sound... so surely you can produce the math that you're referring too and back it up with supporting proofs or something.

Did you have fun googling game theory?

Again you misconstrue my statement. Re-read again what I said I can mathematically prove, which nullify all of your counter arguments.

I'm the one trying to sound smart? Okay Mr "the duality is real"

i will also 100% say that the ego CAN be bad, but it's not inherent. labeling something your forever stuck with as "bad" is a surefire way to be in misery
Dont listen to this guy. I got nothing against Krazy but on the subject of ego he knows Nothing.

Krazy believes both ego and consciousness = your body

Thats exactly what ego is. Thinking your better than everyone else because you drive a BMW. Its for insecure people with inferiority complex to make themselves feel better.

Wrong, thats what gives people meaning. Im still learning and have far from made it.

You can still have career goals, contribution goals, body goals, money goals.

Does money give you meaning? It doesnt, because when you get it you will be like is this all there is? Flashes of pleasure yes, true happiness and fulfillment, no.

anyways, i dont get it because i have papers stating the "wanting" things is necessary and that the "ego" as a holding place is necessary. otherwise we'd be brain dead

this is how i dont get it's association with something good. i USED to think i knew what it was talking about but the true thing is horrible. i also had these same identity problems when i freaked out on weed

think about the most insecure you've ever been and compound that times 100
Iv already gone over this with you.

There is the spiritual you and there is the personality you, the later is changing, growing and evolving. If your personality was you, then it would be set in stone and circumstances and environment would have no influence over that.

You keep saying your body is "you" , I dont want to be a dick but I hope there is more to you than your body which will whither away and die one day.

The "ego" in this context is just a way of giving worth to ourselves, because a sense of self worth make us want to preserve our lives, thus resulting in more opportunities to reproduce.

However I agree that this is a good thing, without this, we have no desire to live and experience success, thus not being rewarded by our brains for these actions.

If you want tk move beyond the idea of humans as DNA replicators the only reasons to live are the pleasurable chemicals our brain produces.
Im all for self worth/esteem, which is different from ego which is a fictitious inflated sense of self above and beyond everyone else.

Notice how a person of true status never puts down or belittles anyone. An ego most definitely does because he actually doesnt like himself and truly sees himself as inferior thus inflating his ego above other people to compensate for low self esteem.

I'm talking about the self-fuelled desire to improve/create.

Something everyone is born with.

But I know that without it, you might as welll be dead.
Your thinking of Buddhists, but even Buddhist, are they not improving themselves? Arnt they making themselves extremely strong in the mind, growing, improving? They just dont chase cars or money because its unnecessary for a happy life.

I'm chasing money and wealth myself (I have the opportunity so why not?), personal growth, contribution, goal attainment, an aesthetic body, sex and relationships. Im sure I dont need ego to reach my goals and have worldly success you speak of.

Just shut up. I know far more than you

You seem to think you know and im telling you, you dont.

I experienced ego death and all of that other horsechit and it was terrible.

There are ways to do it sober

The way you form sentences i can tell you you have no idea what youre talking about.

Without an identity you cant identify anything. If you believe so, explain to me how you can

Thus i am telling you most of you talking about it as a positive thing/instance/experience are not only half-wit spiritualists, but also liars.

A lot of the forums were taken down, as i can imagine after people got wind of the fact that they were trying to bring ego death to people.

Look up ruthless truth.. and whatever else comes a long with it

Edit: also, just to to further prove my point. The "lying" that comes about with all of this horse chit. If you look up ruthless truth youll see something called the "vanishing narrative"

I find it hilarious they made a WEBSITE called the vanishing narrative --- the "vanishing narrative" would negate the entirety of making a website no?

Its called the mind-body connection. Very well supported.

Please look.up if there is ever an experience that doesnt come from your body - which houses your brain

Alao, look up "brutal beginnings" ebook - from ruthless truth.

Also, this would coincide with my "infantile" comments i was stating earlier itt.

"Brutal beginnings" - they are trying to infantilize you.

Funnily enough, on top all of this.. the dude that started ruthless truth.. much like eckhart tolle.. tries to make money off of his 2,000 year-old "findings"

Tell me about this experience you had on weed and this apparent ego death you had. Must have been profound since you feel strongly about this. I need to know for my future reference since im interested in ego death. Not saying im going to do it but im interested. Thing is I dont want to go soft or weak or be walked all over and I want to stay a sick kunt and I think I can do it without the ego.

I think it all comes down to your definition of ego. To me its a inflated sense of importance / putting yourself above other people. Under that definition I dont think ego is a good thing. If you have self esteem / worth, why do we need ego which nobody likes.

Again, you can be egoless and still have goals. Echard Tolle doesnt tell you "dont have goals, just sit under a tree and meditate all day!" He tells you its fine to have goals and want things in your life. He's not turning you into a Buddhist monk.

I hear what your saying about no identity. I need some time to reflect on this.

I don't believe that's true, based on my experience and research into Taoism.

Taoists, can range from ascetics to people who embrace living in civilization.

In Taoist tradition there are practices to reach 'enlightenment' (whatever that means), to increasing your libido, manuals on how to turn sex into an energy practices, how to bring more energy into your life to increase beneficial opportunities and experiences into your life, etc.

I'd advise you to look into Taoist like:

Bruce Frantzis.
Serge Augier.

And I would advise you to look into Taoist practices like:
Ba Gua.
Hsing Yi.
Feng Shui.

I think you'll come to the conclusion that there are many practices that embrace 'passion', actually try to increase them.

Eastern philosophy =/= Monastic Buddhism (in case that's what you are implying).
the west is entirely the opposite
Again, I don't believe that's true.

Based on research into things like; Stoicism, which is an ancient greek and roman approach to philosophy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yu7n0XzqtfA

And although Christianity began in the middle east, it seems to have largely shaped western history and culture. And Christianity doesn't seem to embrace 'passion'.

Women rely on the male ego to manipulate men. The truth is nearly every man has an ego, they just pretend otherwise. Only guys like me and imbored have removed our egos completely.

Trying to keep it short -

Freaked out on weed
Didnt think anything happened
Cumulative affect lasted a week or two (it happened a few times)
Each time i was lost as fuk.
To add more confusion im usually on top of my game, and were talking one day/ one experience threw me for a loophole
Once it was all over the only way to describe it was "ego death"

Like a complete dissolution of identity.

Normally, wed call it insecurity/ unassuredness whatever

It wasnt until later that i learned that it was a panic attack.

People take psychedilics/ other drugs to try and achieve and i am pretty sure it just overloads the brain into a panic attack.

I read this thing that was supposed to induce ego death. I wasnt looking for it at all, i thought i was smart enough to form a rebuttal, but it was just like being azz blasted with negativity. Literally just flip the way you even LOOK at stuff; not even the way you read words but the way you LOOK at things.

Sober it was 100X worse. Way, way worse and more impactful.

When i say infantilizing people i mean truly infantilizing; i felt like an infant. "Re-birth" is truly the way i felt; i can see this being copacetic to those that want to be "re-born" but i wanted anything but.

I went from being highly, highly analytical to looking at a lawn mower and having no idea what was going on; it was like just there. Like blah.. no brain connections or anything being made; it was like my brain connections had been whiped clean.

It was truly awful. The most terrifying and horrible experience of my life. On top of this, very confusing and stressful.

If you look it up theres an equal amount of people saying it was transforming as it was horrendous. Many people advocating against it

Supoosedly, doing it sober is much stronger

The only reason i mention weed is that it feltsimilarto what i experienced earlier, although sober it was 10X more potent

Based on the comments ITT, and something I observed from various spiritual communities and religions, is that there is no consensus on what 'ego' actually refers to.

Some people in this thread use it to mean identity, some use it to mean self-image, others narcissism, others status-seeking traits/behavior , etc.

If the ego means identity, then I agree with psychologist Stanley Block, who says that there's nothing wrong with our 'identity system' the problem is when it becomes overactive.

If ego means a self image, then I think having a positive self image is crucial for having a happy life.

If ego means narcissism, then I agree that it's not a good thing, but I don't think we can ever rid ourselves of that traits - just minimise it.

And if ego means status-seeking, then I think it's often not a good thing, but I don't think we can ever rid ourselves of that traits - just minimise it.

No I think you are getting ambition mixed up with ego.

Ego is about self esteem.

From self esteem comes ambition and confidence.

You can't be ambitious if you think you're incapable.

I don't understand this negative feedback on ego, what is wrong in believing in oneself??

If we didn't have ego what type of lives would we live?

Addressing the DNA replicating machine guy:

You may have answered this already, cos I skimmed over a lot posts, but... if we are merely just DNA replicating machines, then why aren't we just like every other animal on the planet? Why, pray-tell, are our ways of behaving and operating so much more elaborate than any species of animal?

I think it's fair to say you can compare most animals, such as monkeys with zebras, or sharks with camels, etc, the list is endless.. there's subtle differences amongst all species in regards to how they operate and the environment they operate in, but you can make a concise argument for all their behaviour being linked to survival/reproduction in one way or another...

But humans?

I mean just turn on the TV, visit a city, go to an art gallery... how the FUK can the sheer wealth of human works and achievement be so easily simplified to, "it's entirely about creating offspring bro".

Personally, i think reproduction and survival drives may PLAY A PART in everything humans do, BUT... there must also be something more...

Why?

Cos by my rationale if the only point to our existence was that of reproducing, then we'd be NO different from monkeys. We'd be swinging from trees right now and chit, whilst evading predators, and fuking.

To my mind, all the crazy chit humans do cannot be neatly explained, or even comes close to being explained, in terms of raw biological drives.

i did answer it, but some brahs dont want to beleaf.

its a combination of simple factors, like an innate desire to discover or to solve problems, acting in ways that benefit the group as a whole and acting in ways that utilize the reward systems in our brains in ways that they were not designed.

the only things that cause evolution are those which make us more or less likely to reproduce, so how could we possibly develop more than that?

people just dont want to believe that there is nothing more than that.

In my opinion this doesn't really explain why a gaggle of Gorillas in the wild haven't formed a software company to rival that of Nintendo...

Why us humans and not Gorillas?

Nah I'm serious bruh...

Why did humans create Nintendo?

I mean... are you honestly satisfied with your theory that it's all about reproduction? Don't you think it's a touch simplistic? In my opinion, there's an abundance of chit humanity has done that's nigh on unexplainable, or rather isn't so neatly explained by a mere survival drive...
