I think you need a balance, because ego death = just a husk walking through life, but then look at max ego and you have the endless instragram sloots that think a million guys love them because their ass is big. That arguably is probably worse.

When i was a child i used to love playing sports and getting better simply for the enjoyment of it. Then the adults came along and started corrupting that love and passion with anger (missing the ball), burnout (over playing/practicing), fame/importance (you could be a star one day), money, scholarships, etc.
I remember playing baseball one season and watching teammate after teammate come back to the dugout crying and angry after getting struck out or missing a play. I thought it was quiet weird at the time until years later when I saw how much pressure some parents were putting on their kids to be something they (the parents) are not.
My nephew likes to build towers out of blocks. Each one gets better and more sturdy. He does it simply for the joy of it. He's completely present in the moment. He's NOT sitting there going ... "HMMMM ... one day I can be the worlds most famous architect and make lots of money!"
Side note... most people assume in a thread like this that when you're talking about ego you're talking about the Freudian version. From what i've seen you type it seems like you are too, but you keep referencing it (self-esteem) like its the basic dictionary version of the term. You should clarify.

Is competition necessary?
What would happen if you were in a room with one other person and you guys had 1 piece of food left on earth?
Also, very rudimentary concepts here but lets talk about ego vs. Egolessness:
Lets say youre in a race
Ego: i must do anything to win this race. I put my mind to it ill come out on top
Egolessness: winning the race doesnt matter. Nothing means anything; we're all 1
Which is more conducive to getting chit done?
Which society would you rather live in? Which society would be more advanced?
It makes sense to me those that dont get chit done and arent good would prefer egolessness because they feel theyre inferior and cant keep up. Thus, isolated
How can you be truly open to EVERYTHING unless you forego your own opinion/ survival? You cant be for egolessness while interjecting YOUR OWN right to survive
The second you exclaim your right to survive = ego - the "individual", the "you" the "rights", the "story"

In this case there would be no "you" so why would the race matter?
However, there are many sects and interpretations but this is the core foundation of all of it. This principal that there is no "you"

What if your whole purpose of existence isn't DNA replication but the universes attempt to become self-aware? I know... you're probably saying, "But I am self-aware". That's highly debatable. However, you didn't choose to exist... the universe created you. You are the universe learning. You are the only species known to self-sacrifice for the sake of knowledge. You are the universe trying to be self-aware.

Also whats hilarious..
Is that all anxiety and things of its ilk stems from isolation.
Go talk to people about ego death
See how far you get
Its like the exact cause of isolation. Any resemblance to the word "death" has a negative connotation
And rightfully so when you compare it to "life"

What I described about the race wasn't about personal glory, but about enlightenment. There is saying in Buddhism that goes something like this, "One candle can light a thousand candles." In a true honest quest to expand yourself you help other people expand by lighting their candle. Egoless in this instance, would be the absence of holding on to that enlightenment for personal gain and profit and saying FU to everyone else.

Do you see how you are identifying something?
You are referencing something as individual; as a disctinct different identity that is inherently different and distinct from the rest of the population. Something that you are supposedly against
I am telling you true buddhism and a lot of eastern philosophies center around the opposite of that
And it makes sense in that the obliteration of that would leave you open to everything. But once again, its sacrificing something and being at the mercy of something as opposed to shifting your wants and needs around a personal identity

I don't know if someone was feeding you BS, or that person was just regurgitating the BS someone else showed them, or you just took the wrong perspective but your view is off. A simple look at nature shows this. An ant is an ant. It will do certain things in its own self-interest but those interests are ultimately tied to the colony. This whole concept of letting go of the ego is about finding that harmony between the ant and the colony.

Honestly i dont even know where we are but i know you liked to think you were egoless
And im telling if you have some sense of identity you are not
Heres a basic chart:
Eastern philosophy
1. Cosmological unity
2. Life is a journey towards eternal realities that are beyond the realities that surround us. Circular view of the universe, based on the perception of eternal recurrence
3. Inner-world dependent
4. Self-liberation from the false "Me" and finding the true "Me". The highest state is believed to be a state of 'no-self', where neither self-worth nor self-importance have any real meaning.
5. Behavioral ethics
Western Philosophy:
1.Feeling oneself as an element of the Divine
2.Life is a service (to the God, money, business, etc.)
3.Linear view of the universe and life, based on the Christian philosophy where everything has its beginning and the end.
4.Outer-world dependent
5.Self-dedication to the goal (life vision, success, happiness, etc.)
Im just saying truthfully they are entirely opposite and i feel youre conflating both concepts:
Me and "no me". The lie is saying there is a "you" = identity - and then then there is no "you" = egolesness

Me and "no me"

And im telling if you have some sense of identity you are not

Please tell me how the last 10 hours of your life discussing ego on a body building forum has helped you advance your DNA among the species?

Its either one or the other.
I know the emotional way to do it but im saying its a lie.
And the "self" is necessary as its necessary for survival; we're not a self-sustaining species that create food automatically
Like i said, i understand the concept but its inherent truth is a lie

Internet forum = substitute for base desire to be sociable
Sharing of ideas = condsuive to a whole groups survival and replication
Debating = also a way to create and hold in/out groups of people with similar ideas and strongly differing ideas.

The statement said finding the "true Me". It's not about one or the other ... its about clarity ... "what really is".
You have a million random thoughts running through your mind every day. Is that you? Or is that just thoughts?

Answer me this:
There may be no "you" pscyhologically but does that stand true for your body?
If we substitute "you" to mean your "body" is your body distinct and different from the rest of the population.
Is there ever an experience or thought that didnt come from your body and your body only?
Is there a "you" then? Even if you tell yourself theres no "you" psychologically does that remove the fact that your body and your body alone as a distinct identity is still there? Is that not individualism?
Also, the real answer is psycholigically if i believe there is a "me" there is
A "you" in the very least sense can be named as a recurring series of habits that lends itself to a pattern that you can recognize and call an identity
