SF Bay Area has to be in a housing bubble. Chit is ridiculous. Who the hell can afford 1.4 million dollar mortgages?

I live in the Boston area which is still pretty inflated but I got a good deal in the burbs. I like having to drive a half hour to the city to save 500k on a house.

How? I am definitely considering cost of living lol....it's a big factor for me, rent is ridiculous in my area, and it's easy to look up average COL somewhere but COL adds up from other areas besides rent that aren't so obvious.

If someone had to commit to Lousiana for a couple of years as a job move, I'd say don't sweat it and get it done. I went down there to advance my career. Nearly no one wanted to go, and most of those that went begged to transfer. It can be a cool experience over a SHORT period of time. But once the idea sets into your head that "this is it," is when panic will set in. There is only so much to do, and once you've done it for a few years it gets old. Texas makes everything next to it look smaller than it really is. That brings up flying, which is expensive as heck. Flights started at $500/person and that was good notice to get out of Shreveport. It goes up from there. Driving out to Monroe would save us a little money, usually $300-350/person if we gave enough notice. Dallas is within striking distance, but driving 3-4 hours to save an extra $100 didn't appeal to me most of the time. What I'm getting at is that once I got to Louisiana, I was kind of isolated in a little bubble. No one wanted to come visit. Who wants to go visit Louisiana? "Can you come here?" And once you convince someone to visit, they check the flights and freak out. Then they mapquest the distance and it's a crap shoot.

Going back to the money thing. People don't understand how much money is in Louisiana. The poor are REALLY poor, but there are tons of people with money so living a middle class lifestyle is more expensive than people think. Like I said, there's lots of oil and gas money. But what they also have is a "good ol boy" network that is alive and strong. Competition is limited. Companies don't compete for business, they divide it up and help eachother fight against newcomers into their market. Using a simple example, let's say you are going to buy some brick. Theoretically in a competitive market, it should be cheaper than other areas. Not true, because they can jack up the price because there's really no competition. The guys selling you the brick are fishing buddies. If you are a certain customer, you will get the "lower" price from X supplier. If you are building a project in X part of town, you get the "lower" price from Y supplier. I'm just using brick as a goofy example, but take that times many, many things in Louisiana. Which also leads me back to my point about working with people who could give a crap about customer service and taking care of the customer. Why do they care? They've got the market cornered. If you go somewhere else, they might even get a cut of the profits.

One side note...if you like craft beer, kiss it goodbye. You have a few brands shipped up from New Orleans that are good. Not much else. It's macro beer country.

After 9 years, I was over it. I'm glad I made the move to further my career. I'll never regret that. What I do regret is staying there 9 years. My buddies who made the move for the same reason I did, left after 4 years, and that was a year or two too long for them.

The average is around $178,000 here and $196,000 combined, but homes and taxes are more expensive, so your dollar doesn't stretch as far in that regard. It's only 10-15 minutes from Columbus, where the average income is around $55k, so you could certainly live on it without too many issues--or simply move to one of the surrounding suburbs.

Sometimes I feel us Californians are stuck in denial / cope mode for putting up with the burning hole in our pockets....is it worth it lol.

If you like to fish, hunt or like the outdoors in general LA is pretty cool. I've been all over the state and I prefer northern LA mainly because the upland pine forests and lakes up north are cool. Baton Rouge and south LA are mainly bottomland hardwood forests (swamp) and it gets extremely hot and humid but the wetlands are cool and saltwater fishing is good. If you don't care about any of that then LA sucks, people in smaller citys are generally pretty gross. But 90k in LA is good and if you're not in new orleans you probably won't have to worry about money.

yes - the whole state is pretty much a delta of the mississippi river and is barely above sea level - there's a reason there are above ground cemeteries in new orleans

It's ungodly for most people. I grew up in tobacco country in southern VA where it gets 100 degrees with high humidity, and it was still a shock to my system. I remember when I first got there it was early October. It was still in the upper 80s and humid as heck.

I will say this, the number of sunny days was incredible. Even when it rains, much of the time the sky opens back up and it's sunny again within a few hours. I've looked up the number of sunny days online, and I don't think that number truly does it justice. It was rare and noteworthy whenever there was a truly crappy day where it was overcast and grey all day long. I had spent a decade in Michigan prior, and I remember it being noteworthy when there was a truly sunny day all day. LOL

I would explore the Carolina opportunity a little bit further. No matter where you live you are only a few hours from the ocean or the mountains. Cost of living outside of Charlotte seems to be lower than the Shreveport area.

Yea might have a gig in the Cary/Raleigh area as well.

I have dealt with high humidity before but under different circumstances, I was in the army - so I was always outdoors, for days at a time, with no shower. That's a stark contrast from my current career where I will sit in an AC'd office all day. I would definitely get into hunting etc if I move to either, but on a daily basis I will spend more time indoors than out, so I am not dreading the high humidity as I used to in the past, but it's something to still consider for sure.

I would probably do it. But then I grew up in the rural midwest and enjoy the ability to do whatever I want and be left alone. Currently live in California and I can't believe what an utter ****hole it is in terms of people.

As a Californian I hear ya.

I've been exposed to the midwest/rural areas to know that you can have a good time and live a good life anywhere really.

The people here can be pretty awful, I do agree. There are pros and cons everywhere, and many of the "pros" of living in California aren't "pros" to my personal tastes, like the weather for example.

The combination of COL and the bigotry/elitest attitudes make it feel like you are never successful enough, and it's just unpleasant in that regard. Some people here think that just being here makes them better than others, or just being here means you are more successful, or should be more successful, it's pathetic.

New Orleans and Lafayette are the most fun places in Louisiana

Shreveport is a dump

Friendly people
Cheap housing
Cheap gas
Hunting
Fishing
Get some land and a dog and some guns and just chill like a country baw and go to some bars on the weekend

Lafayette Louisiana has some of the best looking women on the planet, no joke. University of Louisiana at Lafayette is insane.

Good people. Crawfish boils. Honest people. Nice weather.

If taking a 30% pay cut to have your cost of living go down significiantly seems worth the massive culture change you are in for, then have at it

My extended family is from Louisiana, it's great for certain people
