No,I don't want to deal with low IQ bottom feeder trash of society on a daily basis. I was thinking about becoming a cop a few years ago but decided to back out after I realize that its not all milk and honey.

$50,000 starting salary is bad? For a single guy with next to no debt?

EDIT: I actually also applied to be a CO at the state prison and actually backed out of that. Pay was significantly lower between 28-35,000 a year. For the dangerous nature of being a CO that's definitely not worth it to me. At least as a police officer I'll have a chance of working fun events with the public and handing stickers out to kids and stuff.

After I got out the military I went and applied to the police department. I did it because I felt the need to continue serving in a 'uniform'.

But unfortunately I choked up on the last final interview that would decide whether I would be hired. They said I was to nervous.. Which I was Lol. So I didnt get the job, Considered reapplying but didnt. Ended up becoming an EMT and enjoy the healthcare side of things a lot more so now Im pursuing a career in that.

I think I would still be a great cop. I'm mellow, nice and understanding. Generally get along with everyone I talk to, But I can also be very aggressive, assertive and all those other qualities needed for a cop.

But at the sametime I'm glad I didnt get hired because soon after that is when the war against cops started up again and I rather not take a bullet because I'm a 'white' looking cop.

Policemen are basically marked men in today's society. They are looked at as societal pariah's in a lot of ways.

I was disqualified for a medical issue I have no control over, not because I'm not fit for the job you fool.

I had to do the polygraph a second time because the first results came up like 'inconclusive' or some chit. Second time aroudn was the same so they coudlnt tell whether I was lying or not bahaha

It is simultaneously the best and worst job you can have. There are a lot of cool aspects to the job, it can be exciting, you meet and work with a lot of great people. Occasionally you even feel like youve really made somebody's life better.

Other days you turn up at the worst kind of calls... Fatal accidents, child abuse, murder... Those days are tough and you need to have resilience and coping mechanisms.

Most times you're just dealing with utter nonsense and wondering how people even dress themselves in the morning.

I'm in the process now and they don't polygraph for the department I'm trying to join. Heard a lot of people fail the psych test though...

I am a Police Officer in California and have been doing it about 2 years now. I came from the local sheriffs dept where I did 3 years in the jail and I am glad I switched. Good experience for me though.

I love my job and couldn't imagine doing anything different. The hiring process was stressful but well worth it.

I work patrol so I don't do much traffic as mentioned in an earlier post. I also work Nights.

A lot of the time people miss these things and they gotta redo the process over again, it actually happened for me. In every other instance all you really have to do is keep your answers consistent, it's not rocket science. I don't know how some people actually fail these tests.

No. Cool concept for a job, but the hours aren't for me. And the people you'd have to deal with would just kill me inside little by little every day. Couldn't do it.

I don't think sweeping generalizations about cops are ok either. I know cops who are amazing, happy, kind people. Don't let your bad experiences and others' bad experiences shape your opinion about such a large diverse group of people. Many many many cops are just doing a job and want to go home at the end of the day like anyone else. I'm not blind to the issues in policing, but lets not be general about some pretty good people out there. Imagine if you did it to other religious groups, races, etc.

That's what I heard. But easier said than done when you have to answer 1500 T/F Questions and then 1-1 interview with psych doc

The polygraph process are they actually just wanting to see if you will tell the truth on everything or are they just trying to see if you have done illegal stuff?

If you want to protect and serve, be a firefighter. If you really would rather be in law enforcement, at least try to do something that deals with crimes like murder, rape, kidnapping and not on traffic and drug violations, maybe as a detective or in the FBI.

Pretty much this. As a libertarian/classical liberal (look it up, not the same as a liberal), I view many of the laws that cops are hired to enforce as tyrannical and immoral. Who wants to spend their time picking on some 18 year olds partying or a driver with a broken license plate light? Best case scenario, you're wasting your time being unproductive or doing meaningless $hit. Worst case scenario, you're actively creating injustice, like catching non-violent drug offenders and potentially putting them behind bars. On top of that, it isn't well paid, is intellectually boring and probably dangerous.

Yeah , im gonna take the written exame in a couple of months , reason? Bust heavy drug dealers , even though they don't force people to use them they still make them available , its kinda personal for me , and i wanna help people any way i can , plus being able to practise martials arts will benefit the job

I know and or have worked with many an LEO, and the more I saw what they put up with on all fronts, I was "no thanx Jeff." My buddies used to encourage me to join back in the day, but I don't have the tolerance for the level of stupid they see every day. So, I have much respect for the job they do, and am very happy they do it, but not for me.

Having sad that, if you have the calling, go for it. You may enjoy it.

I honestly dont think they make enough money currently. It used to be a great paying job, but it hasn't kept up with inflation.

Port Authority Police make $90K after 5 years base. Prolly over $150K after OT

I can't really tell if 140k is considered good money in NYC, it would be where I live but its not a big city. I know the guys in my county start at $18 an hour, which is on the higher end, but you can make the same amount working as a C.O. in the prison, and retire with the same state pension. I know which job I'd rather be doing.

Was considering becoming a police officer for a long time. Went on a ride along and knew it wasn't for me. A lot of paperwork, and you're dealing with the scum of the earth. It will change you after a certain period of time. I have a family friend whose son has been a police officer for over ten years, he told me not to do it, and that he's seen a big change in his son since becoming a cop. He also works downtown Portland and has to deal with the homeless and has been first on scene to people jumping off buildings. Always have had respect for police officers though, just don't want to become a pr*ck

a 60k wage increase from working overtime? what the **** kind of OT are we talking here? My work has tons of OT opportunities, and I've put in 100 hour weeks, and while its a nice boost it would never increase my wage by that much.
