Srs question. Why don't police use shotguns or rifles in a situation like this? I don't expect every single squad car to have a $1,900 AR in it, but a shotgun or short barrel shotgun is reasonable right?

I wouldn't want to try and rack a shotgun numerous times with a threat that close and with everything happening so quickly. More effective than 9mm? Sure, but it's completely ineffective if you don't land a hit and with such a slow rate of fire and the threat that close, you may not make any hits.

An AR would be much better in that situation, I think a lot of departments have them in patrol cars now, whether it's supplied or authorized by the department. I think budget plays a role. Even if they require officers to purchase their own rifles, they are still liable for their training and that costs money.

I'm wondering more why they don't have lights on their handguns. If the dude wasn't holding a separate flashlight with one hand he wouldn't have shot himself in the hand.

There's a lot more to it, often, than just "oh a Rem 870 costs like $250", since you have to get them in quantity, spare parts, train the arms guys/whatever on gunsmithing them, spare parts support, spares, ammo, create standards and protocols for them, train and maintain training for the officers on them, ammo, it can really add up.

That said there are a lot of government programs for getting long guns to police and it can be done pretty inexpensively for shotguns, then again, in extreme close quarters like that is a pump shotgun you rarely use that much better?

AR type rifles are of course superior overall, hands down, but that can really get expensive AND sheeple don't like the "militarization" of police when they have evil black rifles, even in locations where private citizens can purchase the exact same rifles, so it can be political

I also wondered why they had a separate light instead of one mounted on the pistol. Would a 1187 police in an sbs configuration be a no-go in this scenario?

I'm not sure about other agencies, but the LAPD requires their officers issued ARs to attend UPR school and then to keep up quals and shiit, so there's always the issue of funding and personnel for training. Federal grants allow depts to obtain ARs, like they do with MRAPs and nods and the like. Then again, my local department doesn't even issue their officers MDTs, instead they'd rather purchase brand new Chargers and shiit to look pretty. Priorities aren't always in the right order. For the most part it's easier for local agencies to get ARs since they have to go through their top cop and town / city council. State agencies have to go through the director of the agency, then the secretary of the department it's under and finally through the general assembly. Red tape out the ass.

Decent handheld lights have less reliability issues than WML's, generally (due to recoil surely, though I wonder on design as well). WML's require more training to be familiar and comfortable with, training = time and money, which is basically $^2, and we probably know how many cops don't train more than the absolute minimum to pass the minimum qual standards that for some departments are just once a year as generally mandated by the state certification board/whatever. You need holsters for the particular gun and light too of course, which are more expensive and then you are stuck with that model light or buying new holsters.

Then there is the reliability aspect, Indiana State Police had a bunch of malfunction issues with Glock 22's and WML's because Glock ****ed that up, as have other manufacturers for certain models I am sure, you avoid any possible issue there if you just skip the WML.

I am saying no. No guns ever again, other than shooting with a friend once a year? I gotta say no. That means my wife can't have a gun, I can't teach my kids to shoot, **** that man.



Although it's easy to say that now, with no one offering me $10 million in cash to give up my guns.

Crazy that it's nearly a perfect 50/50 split but slightly in favor of keeping the guns.

I'd just get a crossbow for home defense with baller security and sloots in bikinis armed with katanas to protect me. And I'd still have 9 million left.
