Most people can't find happiness in the simple things anymore. They gripe and moan about working 9-5 constantly. As if it was some new revelation to living in this world and not the norm in life. Animals work harder and longer for something like honey.

So when they base their happiness of things like "Great job" "expensive car" "hot girlfriend" really high expectations. They will get disappointed easily. Especially at 25 when they think their life is almost over.

These were the kids that got trophies for being in last place. Were told that they can be anything every single day. Being glorified by the parents, given what they wanted when they cried constantly in the grocery line.

They now realize that the real world is not like that, so it depresses them. Because they don't know how to adjust to it or break the 18 years of their mommies brainwashing.
"Don't be envious when the grass is greener on the other side because you don't know how much crap it took to fertilize that ground.

Are you ready? "Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins. (John 8:24).

Only in some countries.

Outside of the west many people seem happier
They enjoy the simple things in life.
Eating food and drinking a beer with their friends.
They don't care about keeping up a certain image.

This. Its a question of priorities. People only work from sun up to sun down because they want Iphones and cable TV. There is a weird thing in the human condition were people don't really know what they want. Its the problem of instant gratification. For the most part it comes down to not respecting the animal body we live inside of. People drive cars they can't afford, pay hundreds of dollars a month for cable TV and cell phones, etc but think $3 a lb for organic carrots is to expensive. They don't have time to go for a walk. All these things that are necessary to be happy from a basic chemical reality. You need to move to pump your lymphatic system. You need to eat a whole food diet that was grown in healthy soil to get the micro nutrients you need. The fact is people aren't taking care the their basic needs in favor of the newest video game system that they will only spend hours on their ass making them less happy and sick in the long run. Our society just has its priorities wrong.
we have not spent the last 65 million or so years finely honing our physiology to watch Oprah. Like it or not, we are the product of a very long process of adaptation to a harsh physical existence, and the past couple centuries of comparative ease and plenty are not enough time to change our genome. We humans are at our best when our existence mirrors, or at least simulates, the one we are still genetically adapted to live. And that is the purpose of exercise. - Mark Rippetoe

I was unhappier during my teens and 20s than I am now. But I'm not married and I'm self-employed, so I have more freedom than most.

100% it's HEALTH
If you're truly healthy, it is so easy to be happy.
You feel good, work is good.
You feel good, relationships are good.
It's that simple. But most people find eating plant based and running a few miles a day to be hard. I don't think so. I think what's hard is to be like some of you miserable fu*ks ITT

brb getting lottery tickets now to fantasize winning and living a life with no restraints. Then I inevitably lose and fall back into the soul-draining, hopeless life of work I actually live in.

Nihilistically -- Life is ultimately meaningless.

Most people come to this realization and then subconsciously repress it.

It is pretty damaging to the human psyche.

Lots of people have "meaningless" jobs.

I can only imagine what runs through a 35 year old's mind who works at McDonalds as a cashier.

Lol at judging them based on their job and saying some jobs are meaningless. That kind of thinking is pretty much the problem. I bet a lot of them are happier than some miscers in this thread.

Technically speaking, Happiness is just a chemical substrate.
Dopamine
Oxytocin
Serotonin
Endorphins.
You may recognize the above.

Endorphins from exercising.

Serotonin isn't technically a happiness chemical - but it prolongs... the sensation (and vice versa).

Oxytocin is your "touch" and "smell" chemical - sex, hugs, things that make you reflect on historically shared good times (scents), cause this to come out.

Dopamine is generally what people consider the happiness drug but the other three relate - dopamine is often induced by 'accomplishment' as you get older you meet most of your goals - so are you trying to accomplish?

Folks trapped in a mimimum wage job aren't getting their happiness from Dopamine and most of them.. if not all - are obese. So, it isn't endorphins. Not sure who is finding the smell of fry-grease sexy I can't imagine much Oxytocin going in there so what good is Serotnin?

I don't think people are wrong in judging this flavor of society as not that great of a lifestyle nor that happy-inducing.

Dopamine is the only thing that matters because when i smoked i was happy all the time because of the constant dopamine overload. All of that other stuff is not going to help you if you don't get any dopamine.
