actually a very good argument considering a dog is considered property. you don't get to decide what happens with other people's property. The dog was not hurting anyone by laying on the grass bleeding. While it sucks that the dog was in pain, I'm sure the dog would have appreciated it if he could have been saved, instead of being killed. How do you know the owner wasn't on his way home as it happened? or just around the corner?

not to mention the story fukkin says another neighbor wanted to take the dog to the vet, but the dude took initiative and killed the dog anyway

stop being ****ing obtuse you idiot

there is a fukin reason the dude is being arrested now

lol the more I read into the article, the dumber this dude is.

ex-Coast guard and athlete, so that gives him authority to know when a life is beyond saving?
used a golf swing type hit that requires follow through for maximum impact, instead of the proper fukkin way a sledgehammer is supposed to be used? which would be the most humane way?

hit the dog on the back of the neck instead of striking through the skull?

This is shades of gray my bros.

If the dog was mangled beyond repair (going to bleed out before the vet can save it) then euthanizing it on the spot is the correct decision. If the dog could have been saved then probably better to take it to the vet. I guess they could do an autopsy if they really wanted to figure out what the right choice was in this situation.

RIP pupper.

oh wait AND after he did all this, he just went back in his ****ing home without calling cops, vet, owner, or anything. Keep defending his actions lmao.
I had to sign in after 6 years to comment on this. You're completely right. The dumbass *******s in here saying the neighbour is in the right are out of their minds. You cannot make that judgment call for someone else's pet, it doesn't work like that. Not only that, this ****ing inbred looking redneck is the one making the decision, while other neighbours want to seek attention for the dog? LOL at anyone defending him - clearly not dog owners.

First of all, my dog doesn't get out. So the dumb**** saying it's not the owners fault at all is wrong. I've owned rottweilers my entire life and I make sure to take great care with them. I live around kids and schools, with a lot of car traffic. I'm not letting my dog go. If your dog gets under the fence, that's your screw up. If your gate is easily unlocked by annoying kids, still your fault. I don't have any of these issues because I take precautions necessary to ensure it doesn't happen.

just ****ing LOL at some of the replies ITT. Makes me rage. If you finished my dog off, even if he was barely breathing, without my permission I'd ****ing pistol whip you.

The zoo is responsible in these scenarios just like the owner is responsible in THIS scenario. We're not talking silverback gorillas, elephants, lions, rhinos, etc., it's a domesticated animal and with the proper fencing and precautions, it stays on the owner's property where it belongs. It's not rocket science.

If you buy a gun and your kid finds it and shoots himself, his friend, or family members, guess what? YOU'RE irresponsible. You should have locked it up and kept it inaccessible. Let me guess, "Oh well, these things happen, y'know you can't control kids!" Amazes me that people can just cast responsibility to the wind, your dog, your responsibility and if you can't fulfill that responsibility, you're...irresponsible.
You can be responsible for an action that doesn't automatically make you irresponsible, things outside of the owners control can cause a dog to get out.

Tree falls on fence
someone opens a gate
some mowing crew tearing your fence and leaving it
etc

I'm seriously mind blown at the inability to differentiate between the owner being responsible and irresponsible dog ownership.

I have to agree with this. With great dogs comes great responsibility. This is my third Rottweiler over a span of 20 years (owned first one at age 5) and have NEVER had it get loose. Never. We have annoying kids in my area that taunt him sometimes, but guess what? He's either on a leash by my side or behind a huge metal fence with concrete flooring. He's not getting out anywhere. The owner is definitely at fault too. Something about this story makes me think it's a rural area? I didn't read enough of it, just needed to come in and rage. I assume in rural areas it's more common to let a dog loose freely, but still no excuse. Man, what a sad story. RIP pupper.

would rep you if I wasn't still on r/c waiting to neg that previous dude.

can confirm, just thinking about this scenario happening to my dog who's safely at home makes me want to punch my computer screen. I'd be more than retaliatory if some stranger/neighbor actually did this to my dog.

ok? the point of this thread isn't about the dog getting hit by 2 cars, it's about the kunt who took it upon himself to decide whether a dog that isn't his can live or die. If it had been a stray, then sure maybe he would have been justified if no one else wanted to help, since someone has to pay the vet bills. but that was someone's dog

so when you say "This." are you agreeing that it's the owner's fault the dog is now dead? Because it literally isn't. Or are we all going to ignore simple cause and effect?

also somewhat this.

While yes, a lot of it is the owner's responsibility, some things are just left to chance. I play it safe and leave my dog inside the house all day while I'm at work, but what's to stop someone from breaking in and letting him out the door before/after they clean me out? What's to stop a car driving through the front door?

We don't know enough about the circumstances to say whether the owner was negligent, or the victim of a freak coincidence, so anyone trying to point blame at the owner is just redirecting from the focus of the thread, as the main subject of this case is the ******* who thought he was in the right to kill a dog with a sledgehammer using a golf swing.

Christ finally someone that understands my argument. I was just pointing out we can't immediately label the owner irresponsible. He/she very well may be, on top of that accidents happen that also doesn't automatically make the owner an irresponsible owner. They are like many have pointed out responsible for the animal and responsible for it the results of anything that happens while it's off their property.

Someone made the point of accidents happening, and through my rage I didn't consider that. The likelihood of that happening is so low that it didn't enter my mind. Typically, the owner is irresponsible leading to the dog getting loose, but you're right, we don't know for sure.

Either way, I still stand by what I said regarding the neighbour not being in the position to make that call about the dog. The owner should do it, or someone in the proper position - ie a trained Vet.

Edit: By accidents happening, I'm referring to a car smashing into the house or someone breaking in. Not a flimsy fence or a gate that's easily accessible by little dumbass kids.

Sounds like retards all around in this story.

1) who the fuk sledge hammers a dog?
2) what kind of idiot lets a pitbull just run around the neighborhood when they arent even home
3) how do TWO separate idiots in cars run over the same dog in a neighborhood? Do they live on a highway or busy street? and if so that ties back into #2 with why the fuk is this thing out when no one is home.

I'm assuming he was putting the dog out of it's misery? Yeah a sledge hammer doesn't sound very humane but it was quick.

If the dog was going to live then phuk that guy.

But the last thing I want is a dog to die from bleeding out or something like that.

This is what the primary argument revolves around - why is the neighbour the one making the call about whether or not the dog is in 'too much pain that he needs to be put down'. Who the hell is that guy? How can he determine whether or not the dog is suffering to the point where he will no longer survive? Dogs can make miraculous recoveries after going through severe pain. Either way, another neighbour wanted to get vet attention for the dog, so at least they should have entertained that idea first. This ****ing guy walks over with a Pabst Blue Ribbon in one hand and a sledgehammer in the other. What a cuck.

I agree with this. Even though it is pretty rare, my dogs still get out on occasion and it is always a random thing that does it.. When they were puppies they got big enough to jump the 4' fence so I built an 8' fence and it stopped. In fact I do everything in my power to make them not escape. I put chicken wire buried a foot in the ground all the way around 300' of fence in case they dig.

They got out twice this year only for me to find them in the neighbors yard and wondering in my front yard.

The first time is because somehow the gate unlatched with the wind and opened (which it never does btw). The other time is the neighbors kid climbed my fence to get a ball and left through the gate and left it open.

Does that make me a bad owner because I don't monitor my dogs every move. There is a reason that I built a fortress of a back yard that they can run around free and play.
