I'm seriously mind blown at the inability to differentiate between the owner being responsible and irresponsible dog ownership.
Ok, I'll level with you. Barring an act of God, or some other event that causes the perimeter of your home and/or property containing your animal to be compromised, then you're irresponsible. Fence not tall enough? Irresponsible. If kids are opening your fence, time for a padlock. Dog not on a leash? Irresponsible.

The overwhelming majority of dog owners that I've encountered are irresponsible, which is why I'm classifying the owner of this dog as such. Now if someone ran a truck into his house and the dog leapt out of the window, or someone bulldozed his fence, ok, I can see how that would NOT make him irresponsible.

So much this. The best was a couple walking their GSD down my street, off leash, and as it ran onto my property towards my dog, the owners had the nerve to say "oh he's friendly". If your dog is friendly, it means they can run onto peoples property, especially when I live in a city where it's illegal to walk dogs off leash? Also, did you consider the idea that maybe MY dog isn't friendly? You should've seen their reaction when my dog bit the living **** out of their GSD. Some people shouldn't own dogs. Idiots get them because they look cool. Just lol.

I bet if that dog would of mauled your loved one in the front yard yall wouldnt be saying "dogs get out, it happens." Owner has no right to be mad at him even tho he overreacted and put his super hero cape on too fast.

INSTANT RAGE!!! I am shaking with anger while reading this, although yes, the dog should be put down if it is in extreme agony and beyond help, it didn't have to be WITH A PHUCKING SLEDGEHAMMER! I would not kill my neighbor, that would be too easy, I would beat him within an inch of his life and keep him alive to fear me for the rest of his chitty existence. At least the vet could have give him a quick needle and he could have possibly said goodbye to his dog, I am pi553d. Gotta calm down now, bye

If someone crippled me beyond repair and I was in extreme agony I would PRAY someone put me out of my misery with a shot to the back of my neck severing my spinal chord/destroying my brain, too. It's a quick death. BUT in this case can't really judge if it was the right thing to do. No one knows how badly hurt the dog actually was.

Owner has a right to be upset, why wouldn't he? These are two separate things happening. One is the dog getting loose - I fully agree with you, irresponsible of the owner.

Second issue, and the main one of this thread - when the dog was bleeding out on the owner's porch, after being hit by 2 cars, what gives the neighbour the right to walk over there and crush the dog's head because he wanted to put it out of its misery? No, you can't do that. This is why he's getting arrested.

Pitbulls should be banned first of all. The owner is an idiot for letting it run loose in the streets

I don't believe someone has the right to euthanize another person's dog without permission.

People really have an issue with the use of a sledgehammer? mind=blown

Not everyone exercises their 2A rights so the guy probably just grabbed the first blunt force object he saw

Why would he do that? Who is he to do this? Answer that. That's the real issue, not the ****ing tool used to crush the dog's head.

This. I understand the reasoning. It was almost humane, until he decided to use a sledgehammer to do it. I'd be happy someone had the decency to end his suffering, but not like that wtf. Pull out a gun at least.

Still, not his choice.

not sure if srs. did you guys read the article? i have no problem with a sledgehammer, but how he used it is inhumane. he didn't swing it down like he was smashing a railroad spike. He swung it like a golf club, and unless the dog's head was up against a wall, that's inhumane af

I'm confused at how you're deciding to make these posts

where, in this thread, article, or story, does self-defense come into play at all? Why are you even bringing up self-defense?

2 things happened

I hear you, it was the owner's fault for the Pitbull getting loose (most likely, unless someone drove their car into the house bla bla). But picture this:

You're at work. Your dog get's loose because of your mistake, you're wrong, no doubt. But you find out your dog got hit by two cars, ended up bleeding out on your porch, while neighbours want to take him to the vet, and some hillbilly comes over with a sledge hammer and crushes his head.

If my dog got loose and mauled a kid or something, I'd put him down. I'd also take the blame for it. I agree with you, except for the part where the neighbour had any reason to do anything to the dog on the owner's property. If a random dog comes to your porch and attacks you or threatens your safety - end it. If you walk over to a neighbour's porch, see a wounded dog and decide to take action into your own hands - you go to jail.

I was just lol'ing at the fact that the very next post was a brah who took offense to the method of euthanasia

Agree w/ you. If my pupper was run over twice and left to bleed out in the street in agony I'd want someone to send him to doggy heaven by any means necessary (and as quickly as possible)

i brought up sharks to make a point as to how dumb your initial comment was. Why did you even bring up "i bet if that dog was mauling people..."? There was nothing to insinuate the dog was vicious or aggressive, but you threw that out there to contribute literally nothing aside from another inflammatory comment

Now that I have calmed down a bit I can see your logic, you make a good point but still, the neighbor should do all he can to notify the owner with all the details before taking it upon himself.

Lot of posts in this thread are well intentioned though misplaced. This animal was hit by 2 different cars. The reporters description of the condition of the dog when it was discovered does not read like the dog was in a survivable condition. I've had dogs hit by cars that did not survive, they crawl back to home or some dark place to lie down and expire in excruciating pain. The sledgehammer sounds rough AND gruesome but without a firearm what other options would one consider at all to use with a pit bull or other large breed. Those blows were the only mercy that dog got that day.

I'd skin someone alive for maliciously slaughtering or mistreating my dogs, but if my dog was in great distress and not going to survive I'll give a hunters nod because I understand someone did what had to be done.

If I heard my dog was hit by two cars and in extreme pain, and someone killed it, I'd thank the guy for taking it out of its misery, and I have an extremely spoiled pup.
This is how I feel but would need to be convinced dog was in serious pain and really fd up
