I mean, I love NC, but the summers are just too fuking brutal for me. The humidity is such a killer. The average temperature in Portland during July/August is EIGHTY ONE degrees. I would kill for that weather. You can almost guarantee 95+ Degree weather with 80%+ humidity every day in July/August here.

Too hot in other areas? Hang out with the AC on or heat on. At least 6-7 months of the year are good.

oh, and that Georgia mansion is probably so old it was once maintained by "house slaves" and probably has a minimum of $250k in restoration repairs just to bring it up to code and into the 21st century for proper appraisal.
The north carolina house is a generic McMansion, They look nice on the outside because they're new but they're built with chitty materials (roof leaks within 5 years, drafty windows etc). You can find neighborhoods with houses like that (and even at that price) in all 50 states.

There was a girl born and raised in Michigan that I worked with, who was in charge of her aunt's estate in San Francisco. She had to fly out there to sell her house after her death. It was barely 1,000 SF and this was back in the early 2000's. The real estate agent told her it was priced for a "quick sale" at over $600K. That blew her mind. But sure enough, in the few days she was out there taking care of business, it sold.

Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of great things about living here, but I wish we could go back to when houses were 1/3 the price of California.

But when I was in Michigan, virtually none of the weather was enjoyable. It was cold most of the time, and when it was finally warm it was such a short period of time that my body couldn't adjust to it. We are talking about a situation where there was still snow piled up in Meijer's parking lot in early May. And my first year in Michigan, it snowed in September. That's a crazy short timeline of warm weather to adjust to.

The packed activities you talk about is why I love living in the south. Since the weather is so good year round, you don't have to fight people when the weather is at its best. You can imagine all of the upside to it. What's interesting is the downside. In Michigan, the good weather is so short, that the golf courses are frickin magazine cover ready once you get on them. Its absolutely incredible. But they get to spend months prepping them and getting ready for a 3-4 month peak, so its different than being in the south when you can golf for 10-11 months out of the year. I go to the Parade of Homes every year wherever I'm at, and I can't even describe how off the charts beautiful one home was back in the mid-2000's overlooking a golf course in Michigan. It was a little over $300K back then and I guarantee you most people will never have a view like that out of their back porch.

All this makes me glad I left NYC.
The only thing worse than the smell and politics, well and the illegals, is the housing market. I lived in Queens too, yet still paid out of the ass.
Now I can drive my car to work, not take the 7 train and be surrounded by people who are too ignorant to learn English and get government benefits without being citizens.

We are stuck inside for 9 months of the year and most of us suffer from at least moderate SAD srs. Also, when the weather is nice, have fun trying to find any activity that isn't completely PACKED. I have pretty much given up on hiking since I don't want to park 6 miles away from the trailhead and walk single file all the way up and back.
Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of great things about living here, but I wish we could go back to when houses were 1/3 the price of California.
