Your CPU isn't that old. Intel only increases their performance around 5-10% per cycle, so at most, a 7th gen i5 would be like 30% faster, and more likely ~20%.

You're maxing out your GPU and not your CPU so it means your CPU still have some processing power left. Your game gfx can only go so much and is now held by your GPU and not your CPU.

And that's just fine. Games are powered more by GPU than CPUs. Also you dont want your games maxing your CPU since your CPU is also used by any of the apps running in the background.

Also if your CPU is always 100%, its more likely that your GPU wont get to 100% most times and will be held back by the CPU.

Correct. I opted in to the Insider Program, then let it run the update (which was fairly large and took maybe 20 minutes total between DL and installation). After that, I used DDU to fully wipe my Nvidia driver, and rebooted which caused Windows Update to detect that I needed a new GPU driver, and it provided the appropriate beta driver 381.74. I disabled SLI, hooked up to my TV, started up the Edge browser and loaded up an episode of Breaking Bad. Definitely played in 4k.

The Windows Inside versions since build 1616x have broken sleep on my laptop.
It's infuriating. A new inside version today and it's still not fixed. Think it's been 5 updates since they broke it...

Too bad I can't do a clean install of a working build due to lots of dependencies for programming needs that I can't be without currently.

Overall Insider versions have worked flawlessly till this problem started occurring - although some small problems here and there which are being worked out. I.e. the last 2 versions 16170 and 16176 had performance problems while playing CSGO which basically froze the game & the computer 100% for a few seconds. That was addressed in 16180 if I remember correctly.

If you get problems you have the option to roll back to the previous version you were on, but you can't downgrade from i.e. the latest IV to an earlier edition which you have on an .iso.

yeah i was in the middle of updating and had to take my dog to the vet, dumbass ran through some bushes and got poked in the eye and it was all swolen and ****, just finished the update for windows insider thing.


is there any other features of this creator update thing i can take advantage of?

I don't know much about it. I didn't even know about the 4k streaming until shoelaces (post at the top of this screen) mentioned it.

I ended up uninstalling the beta driver and went back to the latest version from the Nvidia website. I noticed in GPU-Z that OpenCL and PhysX were unchecked, and had some poor gaming performance in some games. Not sure why, but it appears the beta driver disables certain features on your card. Installing the newest driver from Nvidia fixed the issue (boxes are now checked) and gaming performance is back to where it should be. Just an FYI, as you may start noticing some aberrant behavior.

What radiator fans do you guys use? I think the ones that came with my kit are slowly dying. They started droning last week and haven't stopped. Looking at some noctua fans because everyone recommends them. But they are $25/piece.

I was looking to replace all my fans in my system with static pressure fans since the ones I have barely push through the grating and dust filter. But including the two radiator fans if I go with noctua I will be looking around $150 for everything.

Are they worth the money? Because it seems absurd to spend that much on fans.

Hmmmm interesting. Will keep my eye out. Haven't noticed anything so far but I've only been playing Overwatch and pubg. Overwatch can run on a potato and pubg is already fairly poorly optimized lol

they are worth the money but ugly. Unless they came out with black ones.

Its also $25 but if you're putting it on a rad, then you really need a static pressure fans like this. You dont need to replace all with SP fans though. Case fans without rad can have AF fans.

Look at the nb eloops as well but they don't provide that much static pressure compared to the latest offerings from corsair or noctua. My current exhaust fans are airflow optimized and they suck ass. In real world scenarios where they have to push through the metal grating and dust filter, the airflow is so weak. Might as well just get static pressure fans. I think I am just going to go with the noctua. They are pushing 4+ mm H2O which is twice as much as competitors at around same noise level. Looked at the corsair ml140 and they push 3+ mm H2O which is still pretty good.

Yeah my priority was the noise so I didn't get a high SP fan. I have an Air 540 case and its not so silent so I chose to get the silent fans. You also have to consider how thick your rad is in getting an SP fan.

About AF fans, I use the 2x140mm fans that comes with the 540 case and its doing good so far even with dust filters on it.

What sort of temps are you getting for the AF fans not to be enough?

Well it was completely fine when I had a 980 in there. But recently I upgraded to a 1080 Ti and the amount of heat that card dumps into my case is ridiculous. Definitely need to move a lot more air.

During gaming I put my hand over the top exhaust and it was blowing super hot air. The metal air vent ports were hot to the touch.

I haven't been following this thread much lately, but my 980ti is a heat cannon as well.

Even with 12 fans in my case running at 1600 RPM each, I need a window open, fan on, and door open or I end up sweating myself out when gaming.

Haven't you thought of putting an AIO on your GPU? Ti is only 250W, that's half the TDP of my GPU. If not for the stock AIO that comes with my 295X2, I can use my PC as heater in the winter.

But due to AIO, never had any ******t heating issues.

AIO on the GPU is a dream.
Set a constant fan speed and the noise never disturbs.

Although, now I actually have it set to increase fanspeed a little when going beyond 55 degrees celcius, but it doesn't break 54 even when benchmarking it fully juiced.

(NZXT Grid+ V2 fan controller is awesome - currently using a community made python program to control the fans (much better than CAM, that program killed my fps like a beast.)

I am pretty sure the 1080 Ti puts out even more heat. First got a founders edition and it was way too loud so I returned it for a msi gaming one. This one is quiet but the heat that it dumps out to the case is ridiculous.

I am already have an AIO for my cpu. Did not want to run multiple kits and the air cooled ones resell better. I went ahead and order the noctuas. Hopefully these will do the trick because my case is airflow constricted too.

So this is going to be my first decent build in probably 5 years, and I have only done a days worth of research so im not too sure what im getting into.

This build needs to be finished by the 31st, and its going to need to be portable for 1 day until it gets its permanent home and probably a custom water cooling setup.

The purpose of this build is to have a clean,safe,fast computer for a crypto currency sale, and then afterwards it will just become a hybrid mining/gaming/general purpose rig.

Im wanting this build to be vr compatible, and also maybe do some cloud rendering and storage. Im also wanting it to be pretty future resistant.

I think my biggest problem is going to be figuring out the graphics card and cooling situation. Im thinking about maybe getting this cardhttp://techreport.com/news/31895/zot...ce-gtx-1080-ti

I dont know chit about graphics cards though, and I dont know how sli bridges work, or if I can run 2 different cards for mining on my mobo or possibly 2 full and 1 mini. Im also going to need to run 1 card open air for maybe 1 hour at a normal web browsing speed. So what do i do? Do I just go for the zotac and run it without water for the hour until i get the cooling system? Im not too sure what the best options would be.

If you're going Ryzen do some research on your ram/mb. A lot of ram compatability issues(not being able to run at max speeds/intermittent stability issues) right now. They should all be worked out soon, but it's something to keep in mind.

I read an article just now that said the the sweet spot for ram is around 2600hz to 3000hz. Will this really be an issue. I dont really think im going to be overclocking or trying to get the absolute best performance out of the build. The pc is going to be for some light gaming and mining, and general use

So this is going to be my first decent build in probably 5 years, and I have only done a days worth of research so im not too sure what im getting into.

This build needs to be finished by the 31st, and its going to need to be portable for 1 day until it gets its permanent home and probably a custom water cooling setup.

The purpose of this build is to have a clean,safe,fast computer for a crypto currency sale, and then afterwards it will just become a hybrid mining/gaming/general purpose rig.

Im wanting this build to be vr compatible, and also maybe do some cloud rendering and storage. Im also wanting it to be pretty future resistant.

I think my biggest problem is going to be figuring out the graphics card and cooling situation. Im thinking about maybe getting this cardhttp://techreport.com/news/31895/zot...ce-gtx-1080-ti

I dont know chit about graphics cards though, and I dont know how sli bridges work, or if I can run 2 different cards for mining on my mobo or possibly 2 full and 1 mini. Im also going to need to run 1 card open air for maybe 1 hour at a normal web browsing speed. So what do i do? Do I just go for the zotac and run it without water for the hour until i get the cooling system? Im not too sure what the best options would be.
I would either go for the 1600X or the 1700 - the 1700X is not worth getting. The 1700 is almost (statistically) guaranteed to run at 3.8 GHz. I would also get another mobo - that is maybe the most fault-ridden mobo on the AM4 platform.
The better ram for AM4 is G.Skills' ram - 3200 MHz etc. They usually have Samsung B-dies and these are best supported on Ryzen. (Find which G.Skill that uses Samsung B-diehttp://forum.hwbot.org/showthread.php?t=152523)
A better SSD is the Samsung 960 Evo (NVMe SSD) around 5-6 times faster than a normal SSD.

Hey guys,

so I've never built a PC before but am looking into building my first one! I'm combing through tons of sites/articles to figure out a lot of this stuff. I'm trying to spent ~$1500 and I have a handful of question if certain upgrades are really worth it...

Here was a first stab at a build but it comes out to ~$1750... I'd like to drop it to down to $1500 as mentioned but need help on what to downgrade or better alternative parts

1. EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 vs 1070 - I don't have any plans for 4k gaming and a 1070 would save me ~$100, I don't really know much about the difference between the 1070 vs 1080 though other than people recommend the 1080 if you want 4k gaming, thoughts?

2. Is there a better alternative for the CPU?

3. I know there are cheaper power supplies too but thats one area where I feel very in the dark... there's a bunch and idk what I really need for this build but I'm pretty sure the one below is overkill

4. Similar to above, whats the sacrifice with going with a cheaper cooler or motherboard?


5. Am I way off base with this first draft and am missing something?

How urgently do you have to upgrade? Because a whole new generation of processors and video cards are slated to release this fall/winter. If you aren't in a hurry it might be worth it to wait until intel coffeelake / nvidia volta.
