What? I said they hate them because they're hunting for no good reason, not for meat, or for population control, but a trophy. It irks people that these creatures had to die to feed some *******s ego

That's not a fair argument and you know it. This guy didn't spend thousands of dollars on a permit because he wanted some food. He did it because he wanted to kill something. And killing a deer wouldn't do it for him. He had to kill something big, and intelligent, and rare. It is my position that a person with such desires is an unimaginable kunt.

I'd actually have less issue with it, if hunters were armed with a knife alone (we know who'd win most of the time though); seems like it would be more 'sporting'. It's not that it's animal cruelty or anything to me - it's just senseless - literally killing is what gets your jollies on.
- Meat is never wasted. It is given to markets and to the helpers of the guides as part of the low pay they get.

- Because we are mammals. Just like any other predatory mammal, reptile, fish, etc. we have primal instincts and working hard to track down an animal to shoot brings a sensational feeling. far as killing for sport, most of these people are active hunters in the states. they hunt for more than sport. when an opportunity to hunt for something you will almost never see in your lifetime and you have the money to do it, why not ?

- It's not a dick contest when you're the one hunting for the trophy for yourself. Hunting with a knife alone is stupid against an elephant. would you rather it be more primal ? a group of 10 hunting the elephants with nets and recurve bows pumping 30-40 arrows into it until it dies a slow and miserable death, all while alerting other predators in the area as it will take hours to kill it ?

I think thats fine. I think all sorts of hobbyists are kunts.

To blacknyllow above, on average, statistically speaking 40 million pigs in the US are killed and their meat is wasted. They are killed for no reason at all. Im saying its ethically inconsistent to care about a guy flying to Africa and shooting an elephant and not care about 40 million pigs that dont get eaten year after year.

I find it even harder to believe these animals existed all this time in peace, but now need western hunters to kill them in order to survive...
1. Cecil was poached, and so isn't relevant.
2. It's easy to see why the animals existed for tens of thousands of years in Africa but now need western hunters for survival.
a. Africa, until about 1960, had a severe infant mortality rate. The introduction of Western medicine, development of vaccines, etc resulted in the death rate dropping while the fertility rate stayed over 6 well into the 90s. (Today it's at 4.6)
b. As a result of this dramatic and sudden shift in the death rate with a much slower reaction in the birth rate, the population of Africa has exploded in the last 60 years from ~250 million people in 1955 to 1.25 billion people in 2017.
c. The presence of 5 times as many human beings has resulted in signficant encroachment on wildlife coupled with massive habitat loss.

Fat, rich, white guys are literally buying land in Africa to pay fees to hunt on so there's still big game left to hunt because if they didn't the skinny, poor black guys would kill all the animals for food because they're starving.

Animals dont "exist in peace". Thats so absurd.

Edit- like as an elephant your death options generally range from getting eaten ass first by a pack of hyenas the day you are born to getting eaten ass first by a pack of hyenas when youre old or getting gored by your brother or dying of thirst.

All the ass-hurt in this thread....

1.) The guy was a big game hunter, not a poacher.
2.) He was paying Zimbabwe huge $$$ to hunt there.
3.) Money goes toward all kinds of good things in Zimbabwe, including protecting big game from poachers.
4.) The 4 elephants killed were old elephants that were more of a burden to the area.
5.) Now younger elephants will have more food space to roam.

It's actually a shame that he died. He was doing the area a lot of good by hunting there.

I think the only solution here is sell permits to hunt Africans. They are by far the largest threat to the African animal population and their habitats.

The Africans that hunt these animals do so to survive. They sell the meat so they can live. Easy for you to say such trash sitting in Texas. These people live in such dire conditions that you couldn't possibly comprehend their situations if your life depended on it.

Ummm
Cecil was wounded with an arrow by Walter Palmer, an American recreational big-game hunter,[1][2][3] then tracked, and reportedly killed with a rifle approximately 40 hours later on 1 July 2015. Palmer says that Cecil was killed with a bow and arrow in much less than 40 hours after the lion was first wounded.[4] Cecil was 13 years old when killed.[5] Two men in Zimbabwe are being prosecuted in relation to the hunt.[5][6] Palmer had a permit and was not charged with any crime. Authorities in Zimbabwe have said he is free to visit the country as a tourist but not as a hunter.[7]
During June 2015, Walter Palmer, an American dentist and recreational game hunter from Minnesota,[21] reportedly paid US$50,000 to a professional hunter-guide, Theo Bronkhorst, to enable him to kill a lion. The hunters tracked the wounded lion and, allegedly, killed it with a second arrow the next day (about 11 h later) at a location less than 250m from the initial shot. He was then skinned and his head was removed.[5] When his headless skeleton was found by park investigators, his tracking collar was missing.[12]
So we have

-Corruption
-Meat was not given to the locals, they just left the carcass
-Big game hunter only gave a crap about his trophy

We only know about this incident because Cecil was being tracked, imagine all the other instances. That's why I find it to believe this exotic hunting industry is as benevolent as you make it sound. You'll never get anyone to believe the myth that trophy hunters are there first and foremost to "help" they're there to bring an exotic animals head home, that's all they really care about

And the biggest threat to African wildlife wasn't the starving people, it's the rampant poaching

so if you pay enough money, you turn into a hunter from a poacher
well if he paid some foreign officials a bunch of money it must be ok then right?

You made some of this up because it's the go to defense of big game hunting

"The elephants were old and in the way" is not true, they were breeding and probably had calfs that will die now, so much for conservation

You seem to have mistaken me for a humanitarian who gives a fuk.

It's not racist you're just assuming it is because I said African. Humans are the biggest threat to wild animal populations due to a number of factors. Not sure why that triggered a few of you but it's the truth. The more of us there are the less of them there will be and that's just logistics. I just happen to like animals more than people so I root for the animals. Humans are trash for the most part and not worth saving.

Sometimes you're the windshield, sometimes you're the bug.
Everything depends upon execution; having just a vision is no solution.

Performance and performance alone dictates the predator in any food chain.

It's actually a shame that he died. He was doing the area a lot of good by hunting there.
Should we just shoot old geezers then?
