Well I was out today and every one was very nice to me. The Black girl at the bank, the Mexican girl at Walgreens. I waved to the Mexican construction workers and they waved back...actually they waved first. All joking aside we are on friendly terms.

When I was younger, I liked to think that my preferred response to such verbal tirade and even physical attack would be to retaliate in an equally aggressive manner, being as mean and vicious as possible, physical violence being a plus. That way I could teach that racist old white man a lesson, teach him not to be racist, and "beat the hate out of him" or at least scare him into not doing it to others in the future. That bigoted man needed to know, that us brown and blacks are tough, and if you insult us or our culture, were gonna kick your ass.

As I get older, granted these kinds of incidents are very rare for me, but I am starting to see that escalating situations like this and stooping down to these people levels is not really worth it. I imagine this man, who I assume is a veteran, is experiencing feelings of resentment and contempt towards minorities in the United States. The same United States he went overseas to defend, and has become more and more, progressively diverse. He probably feels that the values and cultures and traditions that he loves so much, and the things that make the United States such a great place, are being pushed aside to accommodate newcomers, and he is threatened by this (especially by Hispanics which I think are the largest growing minorities).

So sure, I understand why this man may be upset. And why he feels the need to lash out in anger towards a Hispanic man for speaking Spanish in public in order to feel better. But how would "kicking him down a flight of stairs" or cursing him out, or calling him a cracker, etc. help him see things a little bit differently? All it would do, especially while tensions are high, is confirm his suspicions and beliefs about minorities, that they are all violent, disrespectful, uneducated, savages who want to disrespect veterans, piss on the flag, and play their mariachi music instead of the star spangled banner. It would lower me as a person, I would feel terrible about attacking somebody who was not an immediate threat to me, and I would feel bad that all it takes is a few words to make me into an emotionally unstable child.

I think the guy handled the situation decently enough. He didn't attack the other man, he didn't match the other man's insults and aggression, he just laughed at him for being such a nosy, bigoted person in 2017 who thinks they can do anything and say anything to anybody just because they are a veteran or because they are disabled. Sure he could've left it alone quicker, but the miscer above brought up a good point, that by ignoring the situation completely, it often times encourages people to continue that kind of behavior, thinking its acceptable.

I do find people who speak on the phone out loud in public places very annoying, regardless of the language, whether its English, or a foreign language, or whatever. So its an understandable complaint. So maybe, I might apologize for speaking on my phone too loudly, but I would certainly not apologize for speaking a foreign language, and I would make that point clear. But I would try my hardest to fight my natural instincts of getting angry and attacking him right back, and try to be more of a kind of person that I strive to be in my mind, ideally. Which is a smart, educated man who treats others well, is treated well and respected by others, and people enjoy being in his company because he elevates them and brings them to another level, or at the very least, makes them feel good. I do not want to abandon my journey of self improvement just to lower myself and "teach some crippled fool a lesson." And if I am able to maintain my state of positivity, I can not only feel better about myself at the end of the day, that I handled the situation with dignity and class, while at the same time, possibly showing whoever may have been watching, that Hispanics are indeed good people who are not here just to trash American traditions and culture, but I could also help that man, who is so full of hate, to see things from another perspective, and maybe he can lead a happier life, with less baggage, and a better overall outlook.
