It's not even so much about being intelligent, it's about believing lies that will make you happy
if you can't trick yourself into believing lies then you'll probably be unhappy, seeking the truth is what will kill us all
"God done it, but don't worry he has a plan" will save us all

I like to believe that our lives are a learning experience; that we experience difficulties but that if we can learn from them we can at least stop repeating the same stupid mistakes. And instead start dealing with other stupid mistakes.
One idea I was exposed to was that our lives are a mess because humans are flawed and miss the mark (sin), but that god can take the mess that is your life and make something beautiful of it if you are open to it.
I think I have a bigger problem with religion than with god...only people that believe the same as I believe and live the same as I live are worthy of an eternal paradise and anyone who is different than me is going to burn. Sounds like petty tribalism to me.

The old and new Testaments are a collection of stories that describe how to create a civilization. Without them you would not be where you are now.
The phrase "western society" is synonymous with society that comes from the old then new testament. There is no God outside of the society that follows this book, and when you follow this book and live in a society that does, God does have a plan. It's a plan that creates an unending society designed around love and happiness for all who contribute what is needed. It's a metaphorical God representing reality, which is why he never directly blesses you but seems to directly punish. Reality hits you hard and if you do certain things it's going to cause suffering.
Human nature doesn't change. The environment we are in just changes. The archetypes in the bible are just as true today as they ever were. You don't have to be dumb to believe in the Bible, you have to be ignorant to not see it's importance.

Transference of fear and self-loathing to an authoritarian vessel. It's catharsis. He absorbs their dread with his narrative. Because of this, he's effective at proportion to the amount of certainty he can project. Certain linguistic anthropologists think that religion is a language virus that rewrites pathways in the brain. Dulls critical thinking. -RC

But then we live in an every changing environment/society which has changed into a godless one... and it's impossible to believe now

Also, funny you guys all ragging on religious people (which I a not), but fail to see how Science is thew newest religion and you all believe it on faith, without empirical evidence.
Maybe the amputee's purpose in this life was to learn something about living life with limitations and still seeing the good in things, i dunno...you probably chose this life before you were born. You have a purpose.

OP and all miscers. You do realize that all world creation theories (creation, big bang, etc) are just that. Theories. Nothing can be proven, but there are facts that do help give legitimacy to these theories. Is it just as crazy an idea, that some all powerful being created us and the earth than we are some completely random accident/miracle (odds are near impossible)? It all comes down to faith peeps. Some people choose to believe in a higher power (give their life purpose) and some people decide to believe in nothing. Either way, what someone else believes doesn't hurt you. After all what you believe, is what you believe. I'm agnostic, not sure exactly who or what I believe "god" is. But theres something there, some kind of higher power that we don't understand. This world is way too perfect for it to be a miracle. And by perfect I mean, humans, earths distance from the sun, resources, etc.
I have become death.

I'd rather not be completely ignorant and blind to the world. Can't really blame religious people - 90% of them are brainwashed from birth. What can ya do? Some people break free of the mental shackles but most can't and don't want to. Why would you want to have lived a lie? Better to carry on pretending you believe in that bchit.

If I truly believed in some eternal paradise after death, I don't know how I could ever have a bad day. Brb life is essentially a dress rehearsal. Of course religious people are happier, generally. They are also dumber, too.

But admitting to praying, or hoping God will save you means having to admit that your beliefs are at the very least in conflict. Easier to just keep it to yourself and continue as normal.
