This is why I'm so grateful for the misc! I spend most of my time alone in my home office working, don't generally interact with people face to face on a daily basis. It really is a lonely life. If not for the misc the only people I'd talk to regularly would be my clients. I get really excited about going to the gym or the grocery store lol time to mingle! I'm doing a lot better than I was last year, alcoholism is a sonofabitch. Your opening post is too much rl op.

There is nothing in the world like coming home to three kids happy to see you.
Israel in the Middle East is fighting on behalf of the free world, declared Mosab Hassan Yousef, the outspoken son of Hamas leader Hassan Yousef.

i think what is most brital about loneliness is huimans nature to exacerbate it; we treat someone already suffering from it as "weird".
its definitely gotten better. all anxiety and generally depression, stems from isolation; an experience or experiences or an event that isolates you from normal society. in the past, you could be thrown in a mental istitution for masturbation.
for example if we see someone with low self esteem, generally people treat them worse and exacerbate it, instead of trying to make it better
better example you see some kid suffering from a terrible home life, we treat him worse and compound the problem

This sort of area is what I'm moving into research-wise for my PhD. That is, how both social-environmental factors and the way in which we process them psychologically can either increase or deter risk for mental and medical problems.
One fascinating manuscript:

See:Research is now demonstrating that some social-environmental factors, such as social isolation and rejection, can influence the activity of not just a couple of genes but broad sets of hundreds of genes (i.e., gene profiles or gene programs). It has long been known that social-environmental conditions can shape complex behavioral phenotypes and susceptibility to disease (Cohen, Janicki-Deverts, & Miller, 2007). These new discoveries suggest that the external social world may exert these effects in part by influencing our most deeply internal biological processes—namely, the expression of our genes.

is it considered that our brain is sort deterministic in its thinking - i.e. that genes layout the framework for our brain?
ive always considered genes to be more physiological and looked at our brain as more of a "blank slate"
you can see how they influence each other regardless..how you feel is going to influence your thoughts. if youre fat and lazy struggling to breathe getting off the couche, good chance youre not gonna have the highest self-esteem/ most productive thoughts

Genes surely layout a blueprint for the brain, but it is far from deterministic. That's what is most fascinating to me. Take social anxiety disorder (SAD) as an example. When individuals with SAD confront distressing environments where they may be evaluated negatively, there are key areas of their brain that will light up. One key area involves the amygdala (partly responsible for fear processing), which will then influence the HPA axis (partly responsible for hormonal control). This can result in a host of events which includes increased inflammatory responding, which is associated with really bad medical outcomes (pretty much all of the top 10 medical causes of death). Untreated, this SAD will result in continued amygdala activation, HPA activation, and downstream inflammation. Compounded over time, this can expose this individual to harmful medical problems.ive always considered genes to more physiological and looked at our brain as more of a "blank slate"
Yet if we take this person and just shift their behavior in relatively minor ways, it can completely tune down the amygdala hyperresponsivity, downregulate HPA activation, and essentially turn off the proinflammatory response. Just from changing their behavior in a couple key ways and practiced over the course of a few weeks. That's powerful stuff.
All it means is the often presumed direction where biology -> behavior is deeply flawed, and that behavior influencing biology is an extremely robust avenue of change for some of the most complex biological processes in the human body.

What we are actually seeing is that the cognitive interpretation of events, even if there is no harmful/threatening element contained within those environment events, is sufficient for serious biological problems to develop. All because of what someonethinks.you can see how they influence each other regardless..how you feel is going to influence your thoughts. if youre fat and lazy struggling to breathe getting off the couche, good chance youre not gonna have the highest self-esteem/ most productive thoughts
Our thoughts literally influence genetic activity. That'sprofound.

So, the panic isn't the cue for this physiological response, but rather thefearof panic is.

Also agree that some people try to pick on people with low self esteem and put them down or patronize them. Feels terrible.

I would think so, we're DESIGNED to be social.
Loneliness to us is the same as for say a dog.
Picture a dog that just stays locked up, no affection, no exercise, no socialization.
Now think of a dog treated the exact opposite way.
Which dog do you think will live longer?
